V7E22: Algonquin and the Shadowy Wilds

Pressing onward through Ontario, the week kicks off in Algonquin Provincial Park. Following some relaxed camping, a strenuous hike, and a refreshing shower, I venture west to explore some muddy backroads. The Jeep makes cringeworthy noises, and the weather takes a turn to gray and dreary just in time for Halloween. The week concludes in North Bay, where I consider some new gear.

Your cure if you will.....go to a big city and drive around for a week in traffic and see a lot of people going to work looking miserable. That should do it.....peace✌️

I stumbled across your videos today and I love them. While you were giving your Jeep an unconventional bath in Quebec I was finishing up a solo camping trip a short distance south east of Pembroke. I spend three weeks every fall at the same camp site in the middle of 100,000 acre section of crown land near the village of Griffith, Ontario. I make daily excursions to familiar favorite spots as well as to find new ones. I too use a Jeep, a Grand Cherokee. I have a sponge mattress in the back for sleeping and hang a tarp at my campsite that provides shelter from the rain so I can sit by the fire at night and listen to the wolves howl. It is so nice to know that there are others who can find joy in solitude. It is even nicer that you don't feel the need to start every fire with a ferro rod while wrapped in a primitive wool poncho that you made yourself self cinched around the waste with a hand woven rope. If you're back this way again next fall I think I would enjoy chatting with you around the fire for a few hours. Having said this it could only be for a few hours. After that you have to move along. After all it's not solitude if you have to share it with someone. I found a great line from a Nash Buckingham book more years ago then I care to admit. " Solitude is sweet but grant me still in my retreat a friend whom I may whisper solitude is sweet".

I love the way you go out and explore - you take the time to sit down and reflect on the place around you and your jeep is your trusty companion to get you out there. Sometimes I watch folks and they are so concerned with the immediate trail around them that they don't take a moment to appreciate the small stuff. I hope to one day do a trip like yours!

Weekly booster has arrived! We await its generous posting on all fridays. 👍🏻🚩 Seen the video for a bit. In response to your from the outside advice - if week 3 you still experiencing the exhaustion, you could surely consider the 2 options - 1. The winter is arriving quickly and you could plan to enjoy what you have for a bit and then, bring yourself home to rest without the pressure of carrying on. 2. If the exhaustion is uncomfortable, surely would be a good idea to go home and rest for a bit. A break is a part of the expedition Chris. We, your followers, would want the best for you first. Much as we would love to carry on the viewing from the comfort of our homes 🤭. This is one of the best content. Become a part of our lives. Lastly - do pls take that call after the hair cut and the trim/shave 🙂 Perspectives change with freshness. Going back to the video now. Have a good night.

We love your show Chris! It puts us in a ‘wanderlust’ mood when we can’t get out of our busy lives to do what you do. We’re discovering places we’ll never actually get to because of you! If you’re a little down these past few weeks, it’s understandable. Eventually getting home with friends and family will do you good (and get you back into that adventurous mode!). Take good care! Chris, what I use to start my fires is to put some charcoal in the bottom first. Don’t get the Match Light kind that is soaked in lighter fluid. It will smell that way until it is gone, plus if you roast a hot dog over the fire, it tends to taste like the lighter fluid. I use Royal Oak brand and then spray some lighter fluid on the top of it and let it soak for just a minute before lighting. Put your wood on it after the coals start turning a little white. You could also soak the wood with a little fluid for a minute. If the wood you are using is cured properly, you will never have any trouble starting a good fire. Hope that helps! Great video! Always enjoy each one!

We all hit "bumps in the road" in life. What separates strong people from others is how we deal with it. You are making headway that much is obvious. You will learn from the experience of dropping the jeep on its side and be a better person as a result. It just takes time. You need to know that there are lots of folks all around the country if not the world who follow you every week. We all hope the best for you and support you in one way or another. Knowing that should (and I think will) give you the support you need to keep going. I certainly hope so. Hang in there, you have more pure guts than most of us to travel alone into places where you are beyond easy assistance should something happen. Most of us would never try doing what you do. I think the had of fate is on your shoulder and better times are ahead.

Saturday morning, 5:45, waiting for my friend to pick me up for our annual fall Algonquin canoe trip, and happened on RU-vid to see this video just uploaded. Hoping to see your orange Jeep after we arrived, but no such luck. The weather was just as you said. Saturday was fine on the paddle out, but got into some heavy snow squalls throughout the evening. Sunday morning, bright and sunny, but snow squalls came through again around noon on the paddle back. Your Jeep looks much more comfortable to tackle Algonquin this time of year.

I see you drinking kombucha during your stay. Funny story. Other day I detailed my Jeep (needed it bad) and was on a good motivational kick. Figure instead of picking up a monster at the gas station I’d do something healthy. I saw the kombucha and thought I’d give it a try. I love tea so why not. Jumped in the Jeep and as I sat in the parking lot fig before I drove off I’d give it a try. It’s tea so I figure it needed a good shake. It did not. It exploded all over my Jeep! Was very tasty though!

I stayed at Mew Lake two weeks ago. The overpriced firewood was soaking wet, so the only way to get it to burn was to split it into small pieces. The lake itself was beautiful, however despite staying in the loop expressly designated as “no radio or dogs”, the campsite next to me had two gentlemen who proceeded to get extremely high on weed and then sing along with old classics like New York New York by Frank Sinatra at the top of their lungs. Their singing left something to be desired. Definitely prefer more off the beaten path campsites. Re: the boots, use Shoe Goop!

Love your vids. Only trying to help here, your fires... I don't see the fires you make have a progression of tinder. You have good starter, small stuff and then you jump straight to a log. You're missing sticks and small branches broken up, stuff that won't burn up so fast. My family would always go see my Dad's brother/Uncle a couple times a year all while I was growing up. He had 3 acres and a snowmobile, a dirt bike and later a quad and a nice pellet gun. I put a shot w the pellet gun through the back of the paper box one day. My uncle gave me a look that night at dinner that was worse than any spanking. Couple years later, when I was big enough to drive the snowmobile I crashed it and laid it on its side. I was freaked out and scared about my uncle's reaction. Dinner comes, he finds out. Ah sh!t here we go. I look up at him and he gets a big grin and busts out in a short laugh, 'I did that last week down by the neighbors house. It's all in how you look at it. Perspective Chris. You were hot dogging it and it bit you. Lesson learned. My oldest brother who always held himself in high regard, #cocky, would always push things just past the limit. When my uncle got that quad, my brother drove it long enough to do just that and the thing threw him 20ft. My soul is no older, just wiser.
