After doing the water and moisture experiments, you need to change the vacuum pump oil, or at least close the valve and let the pump run down to 28 or 29"Hg for a half hour or more to drive the moisture out of the oil in the pump. Doing this will keep the pump working like new for a long time. Leaving the moisture in the oil can and will cause corrosion and other problems. Very cool stuff you guys are doing! Thanks for making great entertainment!
@Beyondthepress
@Beyondthepress 8 лет назад
I run the pump for a while yesterday until the oil was looking normal. I put the pump on again today to be sure. Perhaps I should buy more oil to be able change it after watery stuff. If this vacuum stuff really gets of I am probably going to get more powerfull pump and leave this one for dangerous stuff like exploding sport balls.
@kenwolfe6093
@kenwolfe6093 8 лет назад
+Beyond the press you can never go wrong changing the oil in a vacuum pump. The oil is used for lubrication AND as part of the pumping process. So, if the oil is contaminated it won't pump down very well and the pump will get damaged also.

@christiangob9493
@christiangob9493 8 лет назад
At first you have driven off disolved gases from your water. This explains why it started "boiling" very short after switching off the pump. You could repeat your experiment with boiled/degassed water. Your pump will be thankful if you leave it running for longer periods. Short on/off cycles are usually bad when the pump is cold. Try freezedrying, for instance icecream or strawberries.

How about a lego figure or structure? They have all sorts of air trapped inside the blocks, it'd be interesting to see if they pop when the air goes out or in (maybe try part of one where the blocks are sealed against eachother with glue so that the air inside of the black stays at the same pressure?). Or how about a sealed plastic bag (like a ziplock) to see if it expands enough to pop (Might need to glue the opening for that though), or maybe a balloon?

To freeze the water you need to get the temperature below 0°C while keeping the pressure above roughly 5 mbar (500 Pa). If the pressure get lower then 5 mbar You need a lot less temperature then 0° because the freezing point is different and low pressures. Also after the Temp drops to 0° you need to take away another 334kJ/kg of energy to make the water actually freze. But since evaporation takes away 2265kJ/kg This could actually be possible. I cant really be bothered to do the calculations (which are in an ideal closed system, which is not practically possible), but in theory it would be possible to freze some water by lowering the pressure. It just depends on the temp of the water at the start.

Be careful with that vac chamber, you DO NOT want to see (or feel) what happens if the seal breaks. I notice the metal chamber already has a deformation on the bottom (or so it visually appears to be deformed)...I urge caution.
@davidrobert2007
@davidrobert2007 8 лет назад
What happens when the seal breaks?
@MMID303
@MMID303 8 лет назад
+davidrobert2007 It will suck the entire universe into to the chamber and create a space/time void. lol
@touchnova
@touchnova 8 лет назад
davidrobert2007 It creates an extremely violent implosion that can send contents/shrapnel flying upon equalization. If the container fails and only crumples, it's not bad...but if the container crumples and creates a hole at a fold point (think folded pop can) or the seal fails at this (or any) point, you're having a very bad day.

And heres the list of ideas. Egg, boiled one as well, maybe a steak? Yeah, vacuum a steak. Would be interesting to see it marinated and put in a chamber to see if it makes marinating somehow quicker as the air rushing back in to the chamber and meat sucking in marinade haha. Maybe bubble wrap? Or a dead fish. Maybe a balloon wich is not inflated. No, thats kinda lame, better a lightbulb! Its lame too. ummm... Vodka? Alcohol should evaporate first and as you let air back in it might condense in a cloud. ok, ill just show myself out

The Triple Point of Water is at 0.01°C and 0.0061 bar. So you should be able to reach it, but it might require a different pressure gauge.
@ChumpusRex
@ChumpusRex 8 лет назад
The pump claims to have an ultimate pressure of 0.00002 bar, so should be able to reach the triple point. However, it is a cheap pump, and it may only approach that pressure at desperately low rates. The pump claims to have a pumping rate of 280 litres per minute, and given the performance in this video, the pump rate falls precipitously as the vacuum builds.
@JuanPretorius
@JuanPretorius 8 лет назад
but surely the pressure gage doesn't actually affect the pressure?
@philipkaiser5663
@philipkaiser5663 8 лет назад
Juan Pretorius The Pressure gauge doesn't affect the pressure but you have to dial in the pressure very exactly so a gauge with a finer resolution is necessary,
@JuanPretorius
@JuanPretorius 8 лет назад
Philip Kaiser Can't you just use a stronger pump and leave it on for a while? After all, we're after results, not a read out on the pressure
@philipkaiser5663
@philipkaiser5663 8 лет назад
If you want to have water in solid, liquid and gaseous form at the same time in the same vessel, you have to reach the triple point and there is only one triple point. see: img1.mnimgs.com/img/shared/discuss_editlive/2353749/2012_04_20_02_00_38/image6158467625517348632_5427546445302335556.png

Electric arcs! Two metal bolts through the lid with o-rings to seal, a spark gap inside and a neon sign transformer on the outside. The appearance of the arc should change several times as the pressure drops. You can also try filling the chamber with argon or CO2 from a TIG welder to get much bigger and more colourful arcs. I don't think there is any x-ray hazard at these pressures (I think x-rays need around 10^-6 atmospheres), but I would keep the voltage under 10kV just to make sure!

I don't see any shut off valve on your vacuum pump intake. To keep from sucking the vacuum pump oil out of your pump, shut the valve off at the chamber, then shut the pump off. Unless it is some new fangled oiless vacuum pump with just some teflon seals or something. Then you'll just be worried about longevity. :) Like Ave says over there. Keep your slick feeling nice.

your also going to want to switch out your vacuum pump oil after every use otherwise you will loose efficiency. 2nd note there should be a gas ballast valve that will allow you to bypass the H20 en-trained in your oil at higher pressures (closer to atm) but you will have to close it to activate the 2nd stage as you pull down further

After every use? Under what conditions? At the aerospace lab we ran pumps every day for years without changing the oil. Not saying it's right but it didn't seem to matter.

After a few good pulls, you will need to change the oil in your vacuum pump. The oil absorbs moisture and other contaminants and you won't get as good a vacuum as with fresh oil. There are A/C vacuum gauges that will read down to microns.

maybe two magnets in a suspension, and then activate the vacuum, i wonder if the magnetic suspension will be disturbed :) i hope you understand what i mean. :) two magnets floating would be cool, or a pump hooked up to a sphere maybe will be much stronger shape? does it get super col din the chamber? maybe a thermometer inside? would a vacuum in a vacuum work? a double insulation layer for the vacuum? would extra cooling (compressing the final contents during a vacuum even further?) help make more particles fall if you suck them out on the lowest gravity point of the shape? would electromagnetic blocking or shielding prevent new particles to enter the vacuum, like if we blocked light would this seal the vacuum leak to become almost perfect? (hope no implosion as a sphere is the strongest shape i think). i wonder what a normal watch vs a water resistant watch would do together in the same vacuum :0 and if a pc or processor would be well cooled or stops functioning in a vacuum, maybe a vacuum would super cool processors, or the heat generated could no longer escape well...
