@MamaDoctorJones I would love a video on the new ACOG recommendation for pelvic exams. I understand that the annual pelvic exam is no longer recommended unless indicated by symptoms for most people (per ACOG and ACS). However, I'm still finding that my pcp is trying to pressure me into unnecessary pelvic exams, despite already having an up-to-date pap smear, regular periods, and no pelvic symptoms. A history of SA makes any speculum exam very painful and very distressing for me, and I'm not interested in getting more frequent invasive exams against evidence-based guidelines. So why are there doctors still pushing for annual pelvics?

Depends on history, insurance and lots of other factors like money. In Canada and many other countries we still give pelvic once a year. If the patient has 3 clear in a row we can skip a year in some cases but you want to catch problem quickly in these areas so things like cancer don’t spread. I think it’s most likely the insurance companies not wanting to pay every year but in this area cancer can spread very quickly. Most are slow growing but infections like STDs need to be caught and treated as early as possible so they can be treated effectively and to stop spread as well as future fertility so I think once a year to once every 2 years is still good advice but as we know the mighty $$$$$ impacts it most.
@devonterry9983
@devonterry9983 7 месяцев назад
@natalievancouver8188 I mean that's the thing though. Research has shown that regular pelvic exams are actually really poor at catching ovarian and uterine cancer, which is the whole reason they stopped being recommended yearly for asymptomatic people. I agree with you that it is probably a money thing.

I have a weirdly sensitive sense of smell and just feel like I smell like whatever I eat for a few hours afterward, around my whole body. I think it has more to do with sweat than any specific part of the body. Though maybe discharge picks it up too.

Of course this is a short video so there may be more context in the larger format version, but certain foods can change the scent of your sweat and if you happen to be sweating in the region down under, you may get a slight whiff of a prior meal. I have noticed this myself after eating something intensely garlic/ onion flavored, or even seafood. But it always goes away in a few hours.
@natalievancouver8188

In Foods like garlic and spices they’re released through your pores that’s why the smell lingers. We sweat them out and that’s one of the reasons why garlic is so healthy & good for people. Alcohol comes out in skin/pores as well so that the difference.

Yes, bacterial vaginosis (I think it's called in English?) Oh, and if you deal with allergies, be careful with the OC medicine treatments for BV 😅 I bought something called multi-gyn and turned out I was allergic to something in it. Well, having your inside "down there" break out in allergic reactions .... that's absolutely NO fun 😱🥴🤣🤣🙈 damn! Never tried anything like it, and well, now I have to see my doctor. Should have just called the doc from the get go 😅 lesson learned 😬 So just an FYI, for any poor woman dealing with BV infections and allergies ❤

A friend of mine mentioned to his fiance that there was a bit of an odor around her vaginal area and she might want to go to the doctor to make sure everything was okay. She got mad and broke off the engagement. She stopped talking to him. He was looking out for her. I really liked her, they seemed great together. But after that I'm glad it didn't work out. If you can't talk to your partner about that stuff then you probably shouldn't be together. In my opinion.

@AprilMarie0286. 7 месяцев назад
He's definitely better off without her. If my husband told me that I had an odor down there and to go to the doctor to check it out, I'd gladly take his advice and go. In all honesty, if you can't be comfortable enough to take some advice from the one you love, it's like basically saying you don't trust his advice, and that's just plain wrong.

I agree that’s a bit dramatic for her if that is the whole story but I get the feeling there may have been more to it. I’d love to know how he actually opened with that topic and what the delivery was like.. god forbid he was nasty or they were arguing or something and he brought it up. It he could smell it then I’m sure she could as well and was insecure and if it was something like BV she most likely didn’t understand why it wouldn’t go away it’s an embarrassing thing to deal with especially if your younger or never had it before because at the end of the day if they were together long enough that they’re engaged then there is a 99% chance HE gave it to her in the first place and we all know WHY we get it from guys and who knows maybe it wasn’t the first time because no one truely knows what happens behind closed doors

@jelatinosa
@jelatinosa 7 месяцев назад
It can be some type of bacteria. Some bacteria produce lactic acid and other types of acids. The smell can be an indication of what type of bacteria it can be. It's normal to have some acid producing bacteria on the skin and genital areas, it's actually beneficial to keep fungal/yeast growth at bay. But if you feel like the smell is strong, it can be an overgrowth you might want to balance out.
@natalievancouver8188
@natalievancouver8188 7 месяцев назад
That’s usually caused by yeast or certain days of your cycle can cause this. If it doesn’t improve or gets very itchy go to the doctors asap cause it can get very red, itchy and burn. Usually patients just need an anti-fungal cream for 5-7 days. So I don’t recommend waiting cause it doesn’t usually just go away without treatment. Your partner needs treatment as well or you can keep passing it back and forth. Sometimes eating unsweetened yogurt helps speed the healing but definitely need the cream &/or capsules you can swallow as well.

Trimethylaminuria (TMAU) is an uncommon condition that causes an unpleasant, fishy smell. It's also called "fish odour syndrome". Sometimes it's caused by faulty genes that a person inherits from their parents, but this isn't always the case. Can be triggered by eating fish.
@sasha185
@sasha185 7 месяцев назад
This happened to me for years. Finally a doctor that didn’t make funny faces told me about TMAU. Now I can track it down to the type of fish. Dirty fish or bottom feeders and all shell fish cause it. Now I avoid those. I have good luck with freshwater bass and salmon. Stay away from sea bass, tilapia, flounder and all shell fish. I do love crab though but because of the cost only eat it once a year and just prepared to deal with it. I’m surprised dr j hasn’t heard of it. Although, It’s took 3 OBGYN to diagnose me.
@jelatinosa
@jelatinosa 7 месяцев назад
Yep. If it only happens when you eat fish it could be from sweat and urine, not necessarily coming from your vagina, rather your vulva and groin areas. People's urine and sweat could take on the smell of what they eat.

Just rinse off the outside and make sure to wash your hands after eating seafood. If it persists, see a doctor. If the smell coming from below is the same as what is on your hands, you have the culprit. Maybe check your SO's hands if you have been intimate.

@@spencerjane732 i know that can happen (my hormones were wild before so one time i accidentally gave him one too) but it didnt smell. Nor did it give me a fishy smell. But what can it be if the woman doesnt have it but only the man does? Without the woman giving him it? No std or yeast infections
@jelatinosa
@jelatinosa 7 месяцев назад
@@spencerjane732what do you mean "given to a man"? Men develop yeast and bacterial infections on their own just fine. What do you suppose "jock itch" is? Everyone has yeast and bacteria on their skin all the time, it's normal. What can happen to anybody is that they can create or end up in a situation where these normal skin microorganisms become opportunistic and overgrow. For women, these conditions are more common because of the form of our external genitalia. We have warm moist flaps of skin that are ideal for fungal growth, but we also have acid producing bacteria that keep fungus/yeast growth in check. When an unbalance is created for whatever reason, could be antibiotics, could be excess moisture, changes in pH from soaps, products, sex, menstrual blood, diet, or even hormonal changes which also make women more susceptible since we go through so many compared to men, these certain normal microorganisms can take hold and cause problems. For men, there can be different reasons why they can develop an overgrowth of yeast or bacteria, and it has nothing to do with "catching it" from their partners. If they "catch it" it can be due to their own lack of hygiene. Uncircumcised men have to take proper hygiene steps to avoid the accumulation of bacteria and yeast under their foreskins. Men who do sports and stay in their sweaty clothing for extended periods of time are more susceptible to get a fungal overgrowth in their groin area. For men it is commonly called "jock itch" but that's exactly the same fungal overgrowth as what we call a "yeast infection" in women. Women are just unlucky to have moist flaps and tunnels for yeast and bacteria overgrowth to more easily spread, become a problem, and be harder to treat because they have access to our insides, through our vaginal canal, which men don't have. So, unless the man is extremely unhygienic, he can prevent it more easily simply by washing up properly and not staying in very sweaty clothes for many hours, which isn't true for women, because we are supposed to be moist down there, we go through more circumstances, cycles and changes that make us more susceptible and our internal bits are more exposed to external microorganisms.

Are you on a keto or high protein diet? If so it could be ketosis, which is hard on your liver and kidneys, which is why it should never be done long term, unless closely monitored by a doctor to treat other conditions. If not, I'd suggest you make an appointment to check your liver and kidneys, and your blood sugar levels.

I mean... it might not be their vagina they are smelling if they only smell fishy "down there" after they eat fish. They might be smelling urine, which can take on the smell of whatever you eat, or even just normal body odor from your pores can take on the smell of what you eat. They might just think that because it's coming from "down there" it's their vagina, but it's probably just coming from their vulva/groin area, from accumulated smells from sweat and urine. Especially since people seem to love to conflate the whole of a woman's external genital area with the name of the hole of the woman's reproductive area. But yeah, if your actual vagina smells like fish, take it to a doctor. I've never understood why guys all seem to think vaginas stink like fish. Mine has never smelled of fish. 🤷🏽‍♀️ Those guys must either not be experienced, or have had questionable experiences.
