I had a carotid body tumor that destroyed my vagus nerve, my carotid artery and jugular vein along with everything in my digestive tract from beginning to end. And then, I developed another one on the other side, which shrunk with a few radiation treatments. My life has been tough...❤😢😊

My daughter has Wolf Parkinson White syndrome causing attacks of tachycardia (since she was five and is now 28). She recently had an operation to zap the areas in her heart that were causing the heart electrics to misfire (ablation) she had always done exercises like you describe to bring her heart rate down but was told at her heart procedure appointment that those exercises were doing far more harm than good and she shouldn’t have been told to do them. Be careful.

Your doctors never mentioned it for the simple fact that they never learned it. Doctors are only trained to match symptoms with available pharmaceuticals, cut out dead or sick tissue or dispense deadly radiation to destroy cells.

Your video was eye opening. I have had anxiety since I was a small child. Depression set in at puberty. I was thin up until I had my daughter at age 24. Inflammation is a big problem for me as well as normal weight gain from anxiety and depression (overeating to feel better emotionally.) My highest weight was 296 and I weigh 255 at the present time. I am now 62. I look forward to immediately begin the breathing exercises and the other suggestions you gave. I believe I may definitely have a poor vegus nerve.

@@grammydee6772What is square breathing?
@grammydee6772
@grammydee6772 8 дней назад
@@lisas4163 Square Breathing helps stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system to calm your body. You relax, breathing in thru nose slowly for a slow count of 4-8; hold it 4-8; exhale thru mouth slowly for a count of 4-8; hold it for a count of 4-8. I do all counts of 8 but when I first started I could only go for a slow count of 6. I do this until my heart rate slows and my body relaxes. Your sympathetic is your Fight or Flight response, Parasympathetic is the opposite but most people's vagal response is very weak due to the stress levels they carry. Square breathing has stopped or lessed my Vagal Episode Attacks more than 85%.

I haven't tried this and am struggling with trying to lose belly fat . 5' tall, age 72, waist 38", hips 34" bust 41" , weight 127 lbs. I shoot for 120 grams protein each day, 10 g. or less of carbs per day , and fat from butter, meat and eggs. I've been stuck here for over 1 year. Walk and strength train at the gym 2 times per week on average. Praying that this will produce some positive results. My HRV, tracked with Fitbit watch, runs between 34 and 55 milliseconds, the nights I don't sleep well it can be considerably lower.

Hello! I’d like to thank you for your videos. So many people including doctors and professionals will not give this sort of information without compensation. Your videos are very helpful. I’d like to ask you something, I’ve had 21 surgeries on my stomach, bowel, and colon. I’ve had 5 perforated ulcers which nearly took my life each time. It is by the grace of God that I’m here. 3 times the surgeon cut the vagus nerve, to try to stop the ulcers. The last time, he went into my chest and did a Trunkle vagotomy. Since then, I’ve gradually put on weight and become very anxious and depressed. Is there anything I can do now to help myself or does my vagus nerve not work? Again, thank you very much. Kind Regards Lori D
@DrKateLyzengaDean
@DrKateLyzengaDean Месяц назад
If the vagus nerve is cut, it won't be able to communicate to the end organ (in the case of truncal vagotomy, the stomach. BUT the nerve has many other branches that impact many other systems, so it's definitely worthwhile to work on improving the function of your remaining branches.

I have to wonder if this is the link to FND as well? I helped my daughter become employable again by doing somatic breathing and activities after having seizures everytime her heartrate increased slightly. I also did this with a student to increase their attendance at school. I was working on the idea that the body was already close to fight, flight, freeze, and any slight change to the body the brain would read as danger and shut them down. At anyrate i had success with both. You are amazing. Thank you for explaining so well.

Thank you so much Dr, great information. I have been looking into the vagus nerve as a possible conbtributor to my inability to loose weight. I suffered a Brain aneurysm rupture 8 years ago and i know i am extremely lucky to be alive. Since then i have put on 15 kg, prob had it on for past 3 years and it will not budge. I have spoken to many Drs to ask if somehow the surgery interrupted the communication between my brain and body, but no one has been of help. I do not over eat, actually dont care if i dont eat. I am not as active as i was as depression can do that.. I started taking Berberine about 3 weeks ago... and still no sign of any weight loss. I have started so.e yoga and resistence training. I am 45 years old and reallly need to get this weight off as it really impacting my mental state now. I weight 80kg, 165cm tall. I will certainly add these practices to my routine. I have been interested in taking berberine for years, but I can't swallow large pills. Recently I found dried barberries (unsweetened) on Amazon. Knowing that berberine comes from barberries, I bought some hoping i might be able to get some benefits of berberine. I've been adding about a tablespoon of them each day to my morning smoothie and they're quite good! Am I getting any berberine benefits from this? Do I need to use more than a tablespoon? Or am i wasting money with this idea? ANY advice you can give is greatly appreciated 🙏

This is a tough one because the research is based on berberine extract, not barberries. I don't think it's hurting you to eat them! Most berries are high in antioxidants and polyphenols, which also have health benefits - but you're likely not getting the full benefits in terms of berberine itself.

Hello Dr. Kate ...my gastro doctor suggested I speak with my endocrinologist about getting on Ozempic or Monjauro to lose weight, due to my advanced fatty liver disease and it could also help with my Type 2 diabetes. But, I recall seeing a video about the pro's and cons of these drugs and there were more cons than pro's. My niece who was taking Monjauro just recently suffered pancreatitis, so I am very reluctant to start it, especially with liver disease and Crohn's disease. I would appreciate your opinion on it. Thanks so much!

How do PPI meds affect the vagus nerve?
@DrKateLyzengaDean
@DrKateLyzengaDean 4 месяца назад
In many ways! They alter the pH of the stomach, which changes your ability to digest and absorb foods, which changes the microbiome in your gut which feeds back to your brain via the vagus nerve (that's just one way). Long-term PPI use has lots of potentially problematic consequences.

@DrKateLyzengaDean I just weaned myself off from PPIs in April because my gastroenterologist had me on them for almost 10 years. I did a lot of research and found out how bad they are...but I'm having bad rebound reflux/heartburn which starts when I lie down in bed at night. Even though I've drastically modified my diet. Will this affect my vagus nerve? I also had issues with my vagus nerve as a teenager and my doctor at the time told me to take Axid, which I only took a couple of times, fortunately.

I recently attended a training that centers around the book called Help for Billy. An interesting fact the author very quickly spoke of is the part of the brain that we are in when we emotionally eat. I think I said this correctly. I noticed you spoke of fight or flight. It seems so simple but I am slowly understanding how sometimes I allow myself a snack at the end of the day and at the end realize I had something sweet at work already! I honestly forgot. Thank you Dr Kate. I had a paraganglioma kill my right side vagus nerve at the base of my brain. The tumor was removed 20 years ago. I gained 60lbs in 2-3 months and my body has never been the same. No doctor has ever been able to help me. My right vocal cord is paralyzed. I’ve had heart palpitations off and on, especially during cardio. I’ve struggled with digestion, along with a whole host of other issues. I still have my left vagus nerve which I’m sure has learned to compensate but not to the full extent. I turned 50 this year so I’m in the menopausal years and don’t know what is from menopause and what is from my issues in my nervous system. I appreciate the checklist. It’s hard to know if improving vagal tone would help when one side of the nerve is missing.

This is fascinating. In 2015 my horse spooked and I had a bad fall, luckily I was wearing a helmet but I hit my head on a rock and still got a mild concussion. After that accident my body went out of control. My hormones went crazy, I gained 40 lbs over the course of a year, my blood pressure would shoot sky high out of the blue etc. I went in to menopause at 45 in 2016. I was put on metformin, did nothing but make me sick, put on BP pills and ended up in the hospital because I lost consciousness, my blood pressure dropped down to 56/36 while at a restaurant eating dinner with friends. My BP still shoots up to 175/95 but I can’t take meds because I will also drop dangerously low. I get migraines constantly. My B-12 is low. I have thought intuitively it had something to do with my Vegas nerve and my Drs laughed at me, I have completely given up on them and have tried everything including eating a strictly organic diet, intermittent fasting, paleo, carnivore, Weight Watchers, juicing, 10 day fasts and on and on and on. I have lost 20 lbs but still need to lose 30 more, but mainly I want to feel good again! I just had a microbiome test and I am very low on the gut bacteria you mentioned. Your presentation has given me some hope I might be able to fix this issue. I just started taking the Acermansia this week, do you have a recommendation on how much to take? Do you have any other suggestions?

A chiropractor appt may really help you. Anything out of alignment can effect a lot of things. I go to a good one, it helps a LOT! Getting rid of all grains, sugar and starches (even potatoes) and eat meat (esp beef), eggs, a little cheese..it will get rid of things being off in the gut. Gets rid of heartburn. Taking choline would help, and get magnesium, potassium & sodium (only good salt, Realsalt is good) and only use olive or avocado oil. This greatly reduces inflammation in the body. I'm living proof.

Your heart rate was suppressed from alcohol and over time, adjusted by speeding up to compensate for the alcohol suppressing it. Once alcohol is gone, the heart rate runs at its current speed until it can reset to a normal rate. The issues with alcohol withdrawal are fast, dangerous heart rate; increased breathing rate; high temperature; and high blood pressure. These can lead to seizures or stroke during withdrawal. Glad you were able to quit.
