I sat in the same class as him for quite a while and we even used to go to private maths lessons together. I tried to see him in the mid-nineties to offer my services, but he wouldn't receive me. What a demise!
This is for those of you that keep commenting on the documentarian pronunciation. I sence a bit of jealousy a foreigner has gone all the way to document a lovely bit of history about our country and all you people can do is to comment on his pronunciation. Well from a very proud Sierra Leonean I thank you on the behalf of the country.
Wow, I'm a Sierra Leonean and strasser happened to be my relative, I'm impressed with your research. Btw he's in Ghana seeking medical attention no longer in the village atm.
I wish him the best. I got touched when I learnt of him, how He got into power , what they went through when he was a captain. He is a living experience . Long live captain. Please i am from a country in Southern Africa.
+254 you never disappoints mko kila pahali👍👍👍🙌🙌I recommends to learn more of Thomas Sankara late president of Bukina fasa to me the bwsr African preside ever lived May he rest in peace
"children are running the country" Given that most "adults" can only run the country via pumping it to some rich foreigners, it's best we give them kids a chance.
I do not know for sure if it is true but why do aliens abduct People starting at childhood ? In My country USA there is a former President DJT. This Man is the ultimate child. His arrogance is rooted in childishness but like all children He is NOT A PHONY. And pile on Me if You will , but His POLICIES were almost universally not Phony and were simply in the right direction. The only modern USA President to be real. And He was robbed of the second round when He was going to lay all the cards on the table. And now that I see how fake modern world leaders are ( and the ruling class in general) I just want more adult children to come forward and tell Their version of the truth. You know Who You are. I would like to know more about this Man Strasser. I would like to sit on the curb and drink with Him.
@@timetraveller4116 Your are delusional dt doesn't care about anything but money and power like rich men do...poor in Spirit! He lost the election fairly and because he is a complete, loud mouth idiot. Tuh!
Best presidential candidate origin story: "He came close to fame when he won a couple of dance-offs at a night club in ..." 🤣🤣🤣🤣 LOVE IT! "Ain't no stopping us now" really should've been adopted as the national anthem🚩🚩🚩😂
Well done. There aren't enough channels on RU-vid which specialize in the history of modern Africa and its leaders as well as ethnic peoples. Would like to see a video on the history of white mercenary groups that sprang up after the independence of many African countries like South Africa, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Congo as well as Angola and Mozambique. Looking forward to more.
Very insightful story; it’s a lesson to all that hold power around the world to treat people with some form of dignity and respect. Power, is not forever!
Watching two of your videos (so far) I can really see how much damage journalism causes to countries and their citizens. It is a good thing people are starting to realize this.
@@AFRISTORYNETWORK A complex History of Executive Outcomes a South African mercenary organisation. BTW. I wasn't implying that was your opinion, just mine. It was a very good production and informative.
I am a Nigerian who happened to lived in Sierra Leone during this guy era. Sierra Leone was sweet back in those days. As a business man based in Freetown back in those days, I will shock you by telling you that the economy was at its finest back then. 55 thousand Leones for 100 dollars. 100 thousand Leones for 100 pounds. This is exact exchange rate back in those days. Today, 100 dollars will give you around 1 million Leones. Sierra Leoneans are very capable of enduring any situation. After this guy was overthrown the economy has been in mess.
A former leader of any country shouldn't be allowed to rot away like this, it's a disgrace to the country. His deputy, who is now president of the country, should provide him with whatever accoutrement is due to former leaders.
@@jouisea632 I hope you’re right. A former President, however he/she got into office, should never be abandoned to the point of penury, doing so disgraces the country, not just the ex-leader. Not long after Harry Truman left office, he became impoverished, and possibly died so, after dedicating all his life serving his country in different capacities. For that, US Congress enacted a law that remunerated former Presidents for life; same thing applies in Nigeria and other developed countries. It shouldn’t be left up to the President, there should be a law that prescribes how ex-leaders are taken care of, else you encourage future leaders to loot country dry while in office. I heard that this fellow was beaten up in a nightclub for the actions he took while Head of state. That’s an affront on the sovereignty of Sierra Leone, that can’t happen to past leaders of any respectable country. As much as we despise Trump, he will still be entitled to Secret Service protection plus the salary of a sitting President for the rest of his life.
@@torideymedia898 No! The advocacy is not about reabsorbing him into the army, it’s about giving him the entitlement befitting a former Head of state-that’s what every dignified country does. To have your former leader live in abject poverty speaks volumes to the world as to the wretchedness of your country. From what I understand, Strasser was not a complete failure while in office, so why discard him into wretchedness, as if he was never a leader of Sierra Leone. You can’t name any other country on earth that allows its former leader to live in penury. You guys should be thankful that he was not a Nigerian leader, he would have looted the country dry and would be wealthier than it today. It wouldn’t cost Sierra Leone more than a $100k for his upkeep annually, so do it for the country’s dignity.
The picture in 3:20 the three men that raised their hands are the ones that did the Coupe d’état in The Gambia in July 1994 the former President of The Gambia YaYa Jammeh on the right, Edward Singateh in the middle with the glasses and then Sanna Sabally on the left end....but this is my first time knowing about Valentine thank you for educating people like me
Regardless of his mistakes as a leader at that age. I believe former head of State Valentine Strasser should be Celebrated in Seria Leone. Leading an African country at that age is tough job.
Exactly. As a Sierra Leonean who's getting this other side of the story, I feel his squad including the current president who overthrew him failed him. I see him almost daily as he jogs on the street, he's almost insane, he's bitter and frustrated.
NO THANK YOU! I had heard of him. Only few things such as he was youngest Ruler as well being educated and those factors. I had no idea of what had become of him. Thanks for providing it.
Following this documentary, the govt of Sierra Leone eventually bought a fully furnished home for the fallen leader... I think a one Bio did the needful...I saw a big flatscreen as part of the package. Thank you Afristory for the good documentary
My question is why can't the government of Sierra Leone rehabilitate him with a home and presidential pension? Bio the current president was part of this junta right? and why is Strasser the only black sheep? I pity Strasser for wasting his youthfulness into this mess
@@haddingtoniangcp2464 Give the devil his due. Don’t forget that the current President was part of the coup. Strasser needs to be rehabilitated. He deserves presidential pension and prerogatives as an ex president. Common!
This guy's life is so interesting and unique. It can become one of the best sellers in books and films. If his life is not already in books and films then someone should help the guy by telling him to write a book or someone could meet him, get the story and write the book for him. A film could also be done. Does anyone know how l can get in contact with Valentine Strasser? Thank you.
Tragic story, he was in an impossible position. Can't say I blame him, nor do I believe that he's evil. They should have just let him have an education, if all of them had had that to start, all of it could have been avoided.
Valentine Strasser, Sankara, .... are the type, caliber, .... of leaders/politicians, .... that the world needs; and this is especially what Africa needs - urgently!!!
I liveed close to him for complete 8 years and he never liked talking about these issues and usually gets angry easily Strasser was never part of the soldiers that went to Freetown he was already in Freetown receiving treatment at the 34 military hospital when the soldiers raid the state house, yes they choose him because he was the most educated one among them so they decided they should go for him at the hospital he can't even walk by then and when they told him about there plans he at first turn down the offer until one of his friend who later became his deputy point a gun on his head and said"captain lead us" so at this point he has no choice
The chief coup plotter pointed a gun Valentine Strasser's head, who was lying in the hospital bed, and said to him: "Captain lead us." WOW! What a story!
@@zimozumo5850 i wasn't too traumatised thanks. It didn't take too long to stop hearing gunshots at night even though there were none. After i moved to England fireworks made nervous for a good while but I'm over that too 😊
Whenever I think the lack of opportunities in my country is crippling, I just feel lucky I wasn't born on the other side of the continent. The liberators of our continent really ruined our future
The person, who created this vid, either mistakenly or deliberately included a picture of the AFPRC Junta members of The Gambia, in 1994, headed by Col. Yahya Jammeh.
Image Misrepresentation @ 3:20 - 3:28. Photo of Gambian Military rulers of early August, 1994 used. Please used right images for such a powerful piece. With love.
Sierra Leone should not have abandonedvthe young guy. He is a former head of state there was need for his predisegsors to respect him and take care of him.
That's something we should look into, I believe it would be better too coming from a Sierra Leonean perspective. We need to tell our own stories cuz others seem to fabricate whatever they can as best as they can.
Only fools sit in their lazy chair and complain about someone abilities to move and bring us good documentaries like this, speaking good English doesn't mean you're intelligent, smart or educated. My mom can't speak good English but sponsored my education in United States and today I'll take her with me to everywhere because her level of intelligence brought me this far. You're a fool if you complain about this channel
Valentine Strasser - Samuel Doe on Opposite Day. Fortunately given who Samuel Kanyon Doe was, that was a good thing. One has to admire how effective Strasser was given his age and the situation at holding things together for as long as he did.
