Tamiya Valentine Mk II/IV model kit built to represent one of the British tanks operating in Malta during World War 2. These were famous for their "crazy paving" style disruptive camouflage scheme, intended to help the vehicles blend in with the many stone walls on the island. Model painted with AK Real Colours acrylics and Vallejo Model Colour acrylics.

Excellent video and an interesting camo pattern. I think the dust coat at the end pulled everything together and the overall effect is very good. I appreciate how you include ‘mistakes’ in your videos and give your thoughts on what you might do differently. This kind of honesty makes the videos very relatable and it encourages people to try different techniques. Even when something doesn’t go the way you had hoped there is usually a way to recover and end up with a very presentable model.

Thanks Les, I appreciate the positive feedback. Yes, I always think it helps to explain problems and how you (tried to) solved them.

Now there's some serious dedication doing all those stone joints, my patience would have stopped me starting of giving up half way through and repainting in the all over colour.

It was strangely relaxing :) Maybe because there was no fixed pattern I had to follow.

That came out really cool, what an interesting pattern. I love how you can see the armoured car lineage of the tank doctrine in the early WW2 tanks

Yes, you really can. Without the side skirts it looks quite similar to the Matilda I I showed in a recent video.

Thanks mate. Yes, looking up the reference photos for this build I really felt the need to build another kit in this scheme too :)

Hey. I built this same kit about 3 weeks ago, and I loved it! It's a fun easy kit and looks great when finished. I did mine with the side armor, and in the Desert Yellow color scheme. That stone camo pattern came out pretty good!

Wow - what a beauty! You did a great job on the Valentine tank! I particularly like the painstakingly worked out camouflage pattern, the subtle aging and dust on the tank! Respect and thumbs up! 👍 Cheers, John

Truly spectacular model. The portion of hand painted camo, very unique. I have to admit I got a bit lost in the multiple use of paints . It's a combo of several things, my building experience recently getting back to building and I don't have a " brick and mortar" shop to walk in and look around, plus some of the paints might not be available in the states. Your videos are very informative and are helping me get up the learning curve. Cheers until the next one.

Thank you - I appreciate the feedback. I'm glad you liked the video. Apologies about the paints - I often include images of the paints I use in the videos but in this case it slipped my mind..

Awesome build and video!!!! Have this same kit about 75% complete over the years - seem to get "sidetracked" on other projects for whatever reason. Anyway, always wanted to do a "Malta" camo and just may do the same on my kit. Also bought a kit of British soldiers that are posed as if riding on the back of a tank in North Africa and want to add them onto kit. Have seen a similar camo pattern on a captured German KV-2 that was supposedly going to be used had they tried invading Malta - think the base coat was to be a BUFF with BROWN lines similar to what you did with German markings - that kit about 75% complete for cannot decide on camo pattern.

A KV-2 in Malta style camo? Wow, that would be awesome! I love seeing vehicles in "non-native" schemes and markings.

Thanks. Yes, I didn't put any decals on this. The kit only included a tiny number for its schemes - not even the unit markings if I remember correctly.

Hello MN....although the tank didn't quite end up totally to your liking (we tend to be our own harshest critic) the result looks great. Weathering is always a hit and miss event but it can also be a terrific learning experience (speaking personally here!). Thanks for sharing your 'hits and misses' as they provide us viewers with future references when it comes to using the products shown during the video.

@@ModelNerd very very very very slowly, stocked up on kits and got a few for my birthday so will have to crack on. But I am currently seeing if anyone has every done a kit of the only Sub in the history of naval warfare to have a confirmed sub to sub kill the HMS Venturer

Outstanding build forsure 👍 I have a thousand questions about British desert tanks. I built that kit from Tamiya. Love it. Haven't painted it yet. I copied a picture has its headlights turned backwards. I also cute the comanders beret off added a helmet. Anyway what Vallejo paint would fit best for early war vehicles. Thanks for any help.
@ModelNerd
@ModelNerd Год назад
Thank you Clayton. British desert vehicles had a lot of different schemes including Light Stone (plain or with disruptive patches) , the famous Caunter scheme, and desert pink (plain or with disruptive patches). I believe Vallejo do a British Africa paint set. Even if it isn't available it is useful to Google for images for it because it will list the paints included, which you can then buy individually if needed.

I think this model looks really good. Desert dust is not easy to get right but I find it easier to control weathering on a gloss surface. Matt tends to absorb washes and oils whereas if you gloss coat the models you can brush out stuff a lot more and even remove oils entirely if its not going as you want it. For dust I use fine pigments and dust it on the tank and then blow over it with thinned matt varnish from the airbrush. I never use a brush to put pigment fixer on as I ruined a model doing that once.
@ModelNerd
@ModelNerd Год назад
Thanks for the suggestions Allan. Yes, I moved to a matt varnish because I found it a bit too easy to remove the weathering with a gloss, and then I found I lost everything again if I went back over with a matt. Maybe I should have gone halfway and chosen semi-gloss :)

i swear the Valentine is the most generic looking tank but not in a bad way it's the kind of tank you picture in your mind when you think of WW2 era tanks. it's the kind of design i love just the basic hull, tracks and turret ontop.
