I have this kit in my e46. For anyone interested in this kit I would like to mention a few things. Removing the dual mass flywheel will reduce the "luxury" feel of your vehicle. The dual mass flywheel is designed to smoothen out shifts and make them almost seemless at high rpm. With this kit the driver has too apply more effort in timing shifts correctly and releasing the clutch according to rpm. This kit is crisp and enjoyable when dealing with moderate traffic. In heavy traffic it is quite a difference from the dual mass setup. Rolling off in 2nd gear when crawling in very slow moving traffic requires more patience and precision on the part of the driver. The pro and the con of this kit is significantly increase driveline feel. Easier to take off in 1st. Takes practice to ensure smooth shifts every time. It really is a hate it or love it thing.

Thanks Mike, appreciate your comments. Question on the chatter, can you hear a significant increase in noise vs the dual mass (which is quiet since it is an OEM). That's my main concern.

@@r2villaluz I second the feedback experience of Mike. Well said. Easier startups but more driveline vibration when using lower RPM accelerations to higher in a tall gear or low speed. Longevity?

FYI, you never want to touch the clutch disk with your bare hands. The oils on you skin can damage it and cause it to slip. Instead handle it like you would a cd.

What comic books have you been reading. Bare hands that are clean will not have any effect on the clutch lining material.

Just put one of those in an A4 B6 3.0. Some slippage under very hard acceleration after a few hundred miles and now rattle from the springs on friction disc. Otherwise clutch works great but sounds like a popcorn machine at idle.

@@jlsautoworks2328 I ended up removing the transmission again to check everything, bolts, pilot bearing, etc... all looked fine. The rattle wasn't as bad but was tired of it. I had another 02 1.8t car that the clutch was fine so sold the 3.0 lol. Recently did a B5 1.8t auto to manual conversion but mounted a used dual mass flywheel from a parts car but installed a new clutch. Turned out well no issues though need to replace a bad CV axle.

"releasing the clutch pedal too fast" so if you don't drive like a dick, it's a perfectly cheap and solid conversion that'll last for many many years.

I'm currently running this exact setup and absolutely "HATE IT".. First off the clutch engagement point is almost at the very top of the pedal so trying to catch the clutch properly is damn near impossible. Like my right foot is pressing the gas pedal down while my clutch foot is way up on the top of the pedal and makes for a really awkward time trying to drive the car through gears. Also I get terrible shuddering from this at low rpm and the trans sounds like its going to explode. The clutch disk has springs in it to dampen the vibrations like the DMF does but in reality it makes my whole car shake and sound terrible. Every time someone rides in my car they turn and look at me when I take off asking "WTF" is that noise and why is my teeth chattering lol.. Stick with the dual mass setup at all costs or at least any other brand single setup.

Whoever installed the clutch for you hasn’t done a very good job at all by the sounds of it, did you buy this kit second hand also by any chance? You get more chatter from smf than dmf due to less or no dampening, also leading the bite of the clutch to be less smooth when pulling away, usually people convert to smf when they run a slight increase in power, stage 1-2 with minor modifications, anything more then you would find yourself with an smf and an organic/sintered paddled race or performance clutch. That vibration you feel at low rev ranges is usually because your flywheel can’t bear the torque in the low rev range as the car begins to hit boost, which is flywheel failure, smf cant fail. Chances are if you bought second hand or privately you’ve been took for a complete twat by someone and they’ve sold you a dmf lol. As this was 3 months ago I’m assuming you’ve replaced this clutch or have a new car, I know about this as the same has just happened to me and I’ve just converted to SMF from DMF in my Leon because of dmf failure, too much power from stage 2 map but SMF deals with the increase of torque in the lower revs a lot better.

@@bradleyhodgson1549 First off I do all my own work, have been for about 20 years. Installing a clutch is pretty straight forward even for a novice mechanic so im not sure how anyone could do a "bad job" on something that bolts together.. The kit was sourced from ECS but there's always a chance the disk was bad out of the box. I guess ill know when I pull it out to put a stock clutch back in the car.. So to answer your assumption, no I haven't replaced the clutch yet. Its my project car that gets worked on from time to time. Currently sits with a stage 2 tune (210 hp) and probably has 2 years worth of driving on that clutch.. This problem I have started immediately after installing the kit and never got better. I did some research on it back then and found multiple people complaining of this same exact issue so I just assumed it was normal and kept driving it. I just could never drive the car very well though having to catch the clutch at almost top of the pedal while my other foot is way down to hit the accelerator. Makes it super obnoxious and easy to slip. The part that really gets annoying is how loud the sprung disk is at lower rpms.. Anybody that hears me drive past them while changing gears would assume my gearbox was about to explode out of the car lol. Lastly its impossible to install the wrong flywheel since the sprung clutch disk will not physically fit on the dual mass flywheel. The hub in the center of the disk is to big and sticks out to far so there's no way you could get the pressure plate to bolt on..Basically a fool proof design.. The only other thing I thought about doing was shortening the push rod on the slave cylinder so my pedal engagement was lower but id still have the obnoxious noise from the disk banging around on those springs so my best bet is to put the stock clutch back in it until I get my built engine done then ill do a proper clutch setup for the power ill be making.. Thanks for your suggestions though!!

@@thomaskunz8029 believe me mate I’ve seen bad jobs done on everything when you let someone do a job that they’re over confident with, it’s the car scene you’ve got some right fucking mongholes out there 😂 didn’t mean to come across as a dick just wanted to make sure that if somet dodgy had gone off and you didn’t really know much about it then you was aware. Have you replaced the clutch master cylinder along with the flywheel and new clutch when installing? Heard that this can also cause the shuddering that we’ve all experienced at some point. In all fairness everyone’s cars are different in their own little ways aren’t they. I’d think about returning to a dmf and just get a performance clutch kit to be fair mate, is your car diesel or petrol, if petrol then definitely return to dmf as at 210bhp you’re not running too much torque through the low rev range for the flywheel to handle, gotta think about cost though also I suppose. Hope you get to bottom of it mate or swap it out, if you’re like me and need your cars 110% at all times anyway lol

@zchrymcpherson
@zchrymcpherson 8 лет назад
Hi! This kit by Valeo is great. Engagement requires a bit more precision with your left foot as you don't have the DMF to dampen things out. If you're running the stock LuK kit, you will also notice a drop in clutch pedal resistance (read: softer feeling pedal) which I wasn't too happy about but I got used to it. Other than that, the Valeo kit works just fine. No complaints here. I drive pretty hard, live in a hilly area and it's still going strong. Also having peace of mind of not having to worry about the DMF failing again is nice.

I would recommend making the switch. I was skeptical of the Valeo kit at first but I'm glad I made the switch. Clutch replacement is a pain in the ass. The DMFs are great technology but it just can't hold up to my driving.
