I think you're onto something about the changes in people when a girl starts puberty. In addition to the ones you mentioned, I see a few more examples of it. When someone dies, returns, dies, returns, if you look at it all through a 13-year-old girl's eyes, it can be the wildly swinging perceptions of them to you. "This person is dead to me." " Okay,I like them again." Also, the plague, the conspiracy, it's the sort of assignment of blame for the problems a new teen us facing and can't explain. "Grandma is what's wrong with everything that's happening in my life. Her and...umm...that man there." Finally, your first love. The desperation of your first love, the desire to cling onto him forever, and every moment seeming like you're going to lose him forever. He's drowning, he could be family, his own family is stopping you from being together, all this absolutism and fatalism at a moment's notice, it's all very pubescent.

Something I've realized in the weeks since watching this is that Eaglet, her young Beau, is the only man in the film who doesn't take or demand anything from her. Or rather, he doesn't try to get with her. He gives her things, helps her (and gets helped by her), and never demands anything in return. I don't know if you care about all that, but it seems important.

Oh, this is recent! I can't wait to watch this and then write some summary of this movie. As a girl from the Czech Republic, I am really excited for this beautiful movie. It sure seems poetic. Honestly guys you really need to count on the decade it was made in. It was made in deep communism during a period of short easing of the oppression on culture and everyday life. I seriously think the theme is present. It all connects to banning religion and spiritualism and folk rituals (mainly present in the villages) under the oppression of the system. Communism wanted to control everything with absolute reason and sth like vampires, magic or witches wasn't really acceptable. So this movie is a REALLY rare example of Czech cinematography. Guys, if you would be down for sth weird and dark also from Czechoslovakia and from this period I can HIGHLY recommend the Cremator. One of my favorite movies.

@tikifreakazoid

I mean I would guess that the rampant weirdness feels fine partially because it runs on a feeling of fairy tale logic, and it never seems like the world lacks internal consistency even if it lacks all sensible consistency for the audience. That's partially because Valerie is learning with you about the world around her (even if sometimes she picks up on things quicker than the audience) and you have a surrogate who also feels, like you, that the events surrounding them are bizarre and surreal but is having things explained to them slowly, and even if those explanations don't ever give the whole story, it does give you a sense that there are in fact rules that guide what you're watching, and that provides the comfort to keep it from going too crazy.
@BAMikeyD
@BAMikeyD 6 лет назад
Additionally... sorry for the spam, I think Valerie and Her Week of Wonders might have not made you guys mad because it seems like it had a dream like quality. That effervescent nature of a dream where once it starts to make sense, you forget why, and trying to go back and figure out why it made sense eludes you. It's the thrill of the chase, where it makes sense just long enough to confuse you when it stops making sense. It's sort of like the dream scapes in Kurosawa's Dreams, only not told as in an anthology format.

The actress Jaroslava Schallerova actually was 13 when the move was made. And the script is based on surrealistic novel - so that is why it seems it makes little sense.

I think the message of the film is supposed to be that traditional notions of celibacy espoused in society, religion or whatever is actually not something desirable, and can actually be like being undead. I don't think it's an accident that all the vampires are people that are authorities in Valerie's life. Priests, esteemed family members, etc etc. Beyond just about celibacy vs youthful sexuality, I think there's a broader anti-authoritarianism in this movie. People in power will try to suck the life out of you.

I sang "Crotch bees in my face bowl" to the tune of "Insane in the membrane" and now it's in my head forever. Have y'all biscuitheads seen "Dogville?" It's a beautiful, uncomfortable, and unique experience in film, which seems to be Lars von Trier's modus operandi. On a similar topic, many, many episodes ago Matt chastised Trier for making films that seemed deliberately difficult and uncomfortable to watch -- I agree, and I believe that it's intentional and that can be good thing, in the same way that the "negative" emotions of fear and sadness can contribute to the success of horror films and dramas, respectively. Do you believe that it can be good for a film to be uncomfortable, difficult, or even painful to watch? And do you have any personal examples that stand out to you?
@MrShoryuken1
@MrShoryuken1 6 лет назад
Mark Kermode once stood up during the Cannes screening of 'The Idiots' and shouted, "Il est merde! Il est le plus grand merde... dans le monde entire!" I can't say I disagree with him, Lars Von Trier is at best difficult and at worst, just plain awful.

I recently re-read a book called "Baba Yaga Laid and Egg" and it delve into Easter European myth surrounding the character of Baba Yaga, but it goes into depth about bird symbolism towards the end. As I understood it, the bird is a male presence. I recommend the read. It's a lot to say in a youtube comment. I initially read the book in a Feminist Science Fiction Book Club. Go check it out. I think this kind of show could work if you guys included the unfolding of the story as you reacted to certain scenes because then it would be a show that didn’t require you to watch the movie and people come to watch reviews after watching these movies anyways to get new perspectives or make sense of what they just watched so adding in that story telling element could work.
