I have 400+ hours into this game. I'm a builder at heart. This is 100%, not even exaggerating, the best building video on RU-vid. Period. Well done sir. I could hear you talk about Valheim building for hours.
after watching countless building videos i also agree i have around roughly 360 hours in the game witch feels low at this point. having never played in "god mode/ creative mode" things tend to take a bit more time. however this video absolutely blew me away with what i could achieve in valheim. somehow something as simple as turning the beams or just straight up using stairs/ladders has me thinking of things in a whole new light. thank you so much. cant wait to show off to my friends in our server LMFAO its the humble low key content creators (like indie devs imo) that always dish out the most passionate content.
This video had the quality of a paid & expensive master class for building. As a builder at heart, who has been exploring building in games for decades i can just say: “hat’s off to you sir”. Brilliant suggestions & ideas, very thought provoking & definitely inspiring, can not wait to implement your tips into my own style of building!!
Aww man, thanks so much for the kind words! I mean it; that's the fuel for me to keep pushing toward the next video as each one of these takes quite a bit of work. Stay tuned for a stone + darkwood version like this, and then perhaps a marble version to cap it off.
6:18 Channeling a little Bob Ross here lol Excellent video and useful tips. Funny thing is, none of it is like "genius" level or anything. It's stuff any one of us could do pretty easily. The genius part is just being able to visualize some of these things and think outside of the box in order to use building parts for things they technically weren't intended for. The fence in the window for example. I would have NEVER thought of doing that.
Ha - I'm glad you picked up on the Bob Ross style! That was quite intentional. I grew up watching him every day with my grandpa 30 years ago. I've actually been considering making a Valheim build series called "The Joy of Building" in homage of him. Coincidentally, I even just temporarily changed my youtube profile pic to a cartoon image of him earlier today. I just need a friend to photoshop one of my Valheim build screenshots onto his canvas in the image, and maybe add Hugin in there as one of his critters ;) I've never been a painter or artist, but Valheim has sort of unlocked a hidden creative side of me I didn't even know was tucked away. Starting a build in Valheim has distinctly reminded me of Bob Ross starting a new painting with a blank canvas, limitless possibilities. I consciously keep his simple philosophies in mind when I build and when I make videos like these: there are no mistakes, just happy little accidents. Experiment. This is your world. Make it however you wish! Anyway, yes - nothing in this vid is mind blowing or fancy. It's about the beauty of how adding a bunch of simple little things can collectively transform something basic into something much greater. It's aimed at beginners who are struggling to make their starter houses look like more than sheds, which is something I see people asking for a lot on reddit. I appreciate the kind words. Thank you.
@@Homitu lol I love everything about what you just said. I used to LOVE Bob Ross when I was a kid. These days it reminds me of my dad (who passed 3 years ago) because he would always turn it on after we got home from church on Sundays to give us something to watch before football started. I have recently started watching it with my daughter on Hulu...or whichever streaming thing has it. It's been wonderful. Thank you for sharing.
Another great tip: window shop. Look up cool houses in the style you like. Mid century modern? Victorian? Post modern? Find some cool examples and references and extrapolate them!
Everyone’s already saying it but this is one of the best if not the best build tips vid out there. I commend you on the time you took to build over 10 examples and taking the time to go through them. Wonderful content. Subbed for sure
Coming back to Valheim soon with friends, and being the dedicated builder of my group, this is just what I needed. Clever and simple buildings, with very good taste and techniques. Definitely a video I'll come back and check, and one that won't get old soon!
I've been looking for a video like this for a really long time! I struggle a bit with the transition through ages because I like to keep improving my main base to become sort of a small settlement, and I always wanted some tips to improve and expand early constructions without having to put everything to the ground and build again from the scratch, thanks!
Aw happy to hear you found it useful! Because of the overwhelming response to this video, I'm going to try to make at least 2 more similar videos: one for the stone/iron age and one using black marble. So stay tuned for more!
Hahaha. As I was showing levels 1-2, I was fully aware of how crappy the building looked; so I wanted to get through them quickly before viewers would lose interest. While showing the windows, I think I even said something like, "these are nothing special right now, but just bear with me. One small step at a time and the house will transform." I also imagine that's where the youtube chapters feature really helped out. I imagine many viewers skipped ahead a little to see if this was ultimately going anywhere. In the end, I'm definitely glad I included the basic house and little upgrade early on to really highlight the contrast of the improvements. Thanks for watching!
When I build in valheim, I try to imagine what I would need IRL and build accordingly. Most of my houses are small 2x4 with a bed, chair, rug, fireplace, and a couple chests. My bigger halls, where I aggregate all of my things, are usually huge longhouse structures surrounded by raised fort walls, moats, and completely self-contained. They are megaprojects. Everything else is simply a cozy little shack for overnight stays.
After taking a break from Valheim and recently restarting after 2 years this was really great for my inspiration! I'm looking forward to build in the weekend! Thanks a lot for all the great vids! New follower! :)
Nice, that makes me so happy to hear! I've taken a few breaks from the game as well, but I honestly feel like I'll constantly be returning to Valheim for the next 10 years. It's just that kind of game.
I've got 2 years playing Valheim and I've built houses. These tips are common additions to home design and make houses IRL and in Valheim look like more than a dry box to rest your head. Good stuff!
It's been a while since I learned anything from a Valheim build video but I started picking up new idea about half-way through this one and it just kept going. I'll have to watch it a few more times to really let everything sink in. Fantastic video!
"Add a happy little banner there"... Noticed profile picture... oh yea this guy knows his stuff. The Bob Ross of Valheim builds. Enjoyed this video a lot, you showed things I never would have thought of like the dormers and skylight that I will for sure add to my current builds. Thanks for the inspiration and will look forward to watching the rest of your videos. 👍
hahaha thanks, friend! Honored to have inspired the way other awesome builders have inspired me. Hoping to get another video like this one out soon. Stay tuned! Cheers,
Agreed. I was convinced it would become a part of the base game with the Mistlands update. Especially because the devs love making use of the vines on a lot of the black marble procedurally generated structures, like the giant pillars and the dverger houses.
Best building tips video I've ever seen, Learnt so many little tricks in each step (Which I'm alittle ashamed of since I'm a builder irl) I didn't even look until right now at the end of the video but I thought I was watching a video with millions of views and a guy with 1000's of Subscribers. Awesome work!
Genuinely transformed the aesthetic of my space. Wanted to test it out right away I was able to create a simple, but stunning brook side base in meadows that I wouldn’t mind living in in real life. I was able to still accomplish some real depth and shapes even with a rectangular building because of the roof choices, and I haven’t been as happy with a build as I am with this one. Thank you!!!
Hell yeah! So happy to hear! Keep on building, friend 💪 Would love to see some screenshots. Also, if you haven't yet, feel free to check out my part 2 video working with stone and dark wood!
I got this video randomly recommended to me and I really enjoyed it. Very helpful tips, I am definitely gonna use them in my world, thank you. Keep up the good work and I'm looking forward to your future content.
Aw thanks so much! Comments like these honestly have me excited to create future videos! I guess I have the youtube algorithm to thank for a lot of these views. Happy Thanksgiving, youtube
It would be awesome to see you do videos like this for stone and dark wood as well. I love that I’m able to take these tips and apply them to my own builds.
Glad you found (and apparently many others) have found this so useful! Building in Valheim is so much fun and I truly believe anyone can become a great builder. I'm currently working precisely on a stone + dark wood version of this video, so stay tuned! It's a lot of work though, so probably will take me a month or so.
@@Homitu I'm revisiting Valheim now that Mistlands is out and this video has really inspired me to make my base a home. Just starting in Black Forest but already got the house on stilts, detailed windows, prominant entrance, overhanging roof and it's not just a big square hall full of chests and work benchs! Next steps are two bay windows, an extension and then landscaping. Can't wait to see what you do with the stone and dark wood materials!
I hopped back into valheim after 1 year pause and was struggling with my new base. Your video is gold! Thank you for your help, my base will gladly accept the tips.
Thanks so much! And I appreciate you taking the time to comment. I'd love to see what you come up with. Now that I've got a small pool of subscribers, brainstorming ways to gather and interact with each other more. I'm thinking about doing some kind of contest or showcase of community submissions using some of the features and tips I talked about.
AND THE PLANT MOD! 😍 The vines! Have no idea why this video doesn't have more views, one of the best Valheim videos I've ever watched 👏🏻 Thank you for your hard work on this!
@@Raven-fq4lb WOW - thank you so much for the kind words! It's a fairly new video, and it seems to be gaining traction. I've only shared it once on reddit, so I'm not entirely sure where the new views come from. If you don't mind me asking, how did you stumble upon it? I'm interested in understanding the youtube system so I can make more videos and get them shared with people who might find them helpful or enjoyable. RE: Vines. I've heard a rumor that Iron Gate is going to make the vines and bushes buildable by default in the upcoming Mistlands release. Until then, PlantEverything is my best friend :)
Greetings Homitu! I'm a huge Valheim player got about 1.5k hours, won a few competitions here and there, played on Jiroc's and Kysen's mostly, fan of JJ and basic and The Architect, but this video and the awesome way you're showcasing how things work and the little details is fantastic and I'm in awe. I have seen an immense amount of "how to" videos and such but this is definitely in the top! Great work! I really hope you keep this up and continue to put out content! Liked and subscribed! - well deserved! - Bvitamine
Hey Bvitamine! Wow thanks so much for taking the time to say all that ❤ I loved watching many of Jiroc's adventures, and similarly love JJ and TBB! I'm impressed by how frequently they're able to pump out high quality content. I'm...significantly slower haha. I've been busy with a bunch of things IRL the past month and a half, so have only played Valheim sparingly, but I absolutely plan to get back in the game soon! I do have many builds I have already built that I need to showcase, but I'd also love to walk through them in a more "educational" sort of way similar to this style video. Working on a format for that. I also plan to make more videos in this exact style as well. They're a lot of work though! Anyway, cheers and thanks so much again for subbing and taking the time to comment!
@@Homitu Totally understandable mate! At this point I'm hyped for any new content that does come out though :) Yeah, I think going through them in that educational way is definitely the way to go, just like this video. Awesome stuff, really! Thanks for the reply too! 🤜🤛😎
What an informative video! Keep up the goodwork! I suggest you organize your channel by adding a profile picture so that many people would recognize you. Anyways thanks for the tips!
Thanks for the tip and the kind words! I'll definitely look into getting a profile picture made up. Might have to harass my pro graphic designer fiancé to help me out there ;)
This is amazing. Awesome tips my dude, and I appreciate breaking down the different elements into separate levels. Makes it so much easier to digest and appreciate
such a fantastic video, super well done. One of my favorite building tip guides with actually helpful info. I love how you narrated it too. Super informative, helpful and charming!
This has been an incredible video to watch with wonderful building tips. I tend to spend most of my time in the Meadows since I dislike the raids. I have, what I consider to be, an interesting build and would greatly appreciate feedback to move beyond the "square" stage of wood builds.
Love the windowsills, and also the eaves on 3 - really nice - and not just on the front like most vids show but all the way round 👍 Fab video the way you've got all the levels and show us the progression. I've been building a long time in Valheim and absolutely love it and this vid is so full of tips, so thanks :)
Amazing guide, man!! Gave me some great ideas to keep building new houses and models. Not a good builder like yourself but getting there slowly. Quick question... What is this mod that you are using to change the HUD? I like the stamina bar and health bar layout. Keep it up and thanks a bunch again!
Thanks, friend! That means a lot! And I disagree - I think there's a great builder in all of us. You totally got this! The HUD is Project Auga by RandyKnapp :) You can find it on Nexus of Thunderstore.
Very nicely done! I really liked a lot of the features you used. I may have to steal some of those for my builds. I love this game and this great community and all your ideas! Cheers!
Truly amazing imagine if you were a joiner (like me) and you built houses like that in real life you would be wedged mate 😅I presume your not a joiner ? Very impressive though some awesome virtual building skills on demo here 👍👍😝great tips too I’m well gel ☺️
Ha! I am not. Though carpentry and joinery are in my family. My grandfather built his own home and then went on to make a business out of it and has built over 70 full homes before retiring. I've lived in a city for the better part of the last decade but just finally moved out to a place with more space. I'm looking into getting into actual woodworking now that I have the space for some tools :) The problem is RL build progress is SO much slower than Valheim build progress :D
Ok, you're now the 3rd person who mentioned David Spade! But nobody has specified why. Is it because you think I sound like him? (If so, that's completely new to me and I've never gotten that before making a video here haha)
Great video mate keep it up. Im defo gona use your building tips when i play Valheim next. Just quick question on your UI are you using a mod or smth that the hp and stamina bar looks like that? not to mention the food stuff :D
Aw thanks so much for subbing! Really appreciate it! And yes, the black marble is AMAZING. I find I need to take breaks from it from time to time though to return to the "simpler" pieces haha. My brain begins to hurt after playing around with the marble for too long. My 100 hour mistlands build (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AFwCxt1WENI.html) burnt me out a little I think lol.
Easily the best building vid, so clear and well thought through. Quick question though, what is the UI mod you use? looks much cleaner than the default.
Fantastic video and lots of useful tips. Thank you for taking the time to make it! One off-topic question. I see you're using the Auga UI + Equipment&Quick Slots - did you have to move the 3 consumable quick slots? I've tried using the combo of these two mods, but the 3 slots were on top of my HP bar for some reason and I couldn't find a way to move them around.
Thanks so much! Both mods are made by RandyKnapp, so they're definitely compatible with each other. It's been a long time, but I believe you're right and I do believe I moved the location of them at some point. If I recall, it was a fairly simple matter of editing the config file. Taking a lot at it in my Thunderstore mod manager, I see I used x and y coordinates of 220 / 220. It says default was 216 / 150.
Not to detract from the point of the video and all the knowledge within, but what mods do you use for that different HUD and the three extra keybind slots for food? Just curious. Also, I really love the explanation of things like dormers, bay windows, and room separation without floor-to-ceiling walls. I initially majored in architecture, so I can really appreciate the thought process and care that went into both the creation of these features and educating others about them for their own builds. (Also yes, that was indeed a bay window lol. They typically are defined by having the three sections and the 45 degree angles. Bow windows are basically the next step up, usually 5 sections typically of equal width that have a shallower angle.)
Great video! Really i consider myself a really good builder but you inspired me with certain details of your own. I would say overdetailing is generally a bad idea in most games but it works wonders in Valheim and you obviously know how to utilize it correctly. Now to the only thing i dont like about this otherwise beautiful video... JESUS CHRISTE ! What are those door windows? that belong to the cursed videos section!
Haha, it's really interesting how subjective beauty is. I'm gonna go with a hard "GTFO, doors make EXCELLENT simple closeable windows in Valheim!" :P (I also think the regular doors in Valheim are a bit too small to actually be doors. Your head basically touches them as you pass under. And you actually can't go through them if you trim the top of the door with a single 2m beam. Weird proportions in Valheim. I almost never use them as actual doors.)
Love your ideas! I'm definitely going to add some of these things to my own houses. Do you not care about rain damage? The ladders, for instance, take damage in storms. Are you just resigned to repairing them? Or do you have some secret that I haven't discovered?
Hi Illexsquid! I talk about this in my follow up video to this one where I discussed the mods I use related to building (which aren't many.) One of the 3 main ones I use is called NoRainDamage, which simply does exactly what it says :) I'm still holding out hope the devs will add the ability to coat wood in resin or something, rendering it immune from the elements. But until then, that mod is one of my best friends because I absolutely love building wood outdoors.
