Christian Holm Dall Sure, reading on Wikis could be nice. But I think cArmAkAze wanted to experience history on game form. Even if it sacrificed gameplay somewhat (which I don't think it is), it's really great to see a lot of history in the form of a game. A game like this could be a strong tool to convey history.
It amazes me how IGN even exists still with how shitty their reviews are. Someone is going to read this review and say, "Oh Intrusive History? I don't want to take a history class, I'll just pass on this game"
@@RepublicofODLUM The game you play is innovative. The encyclopaedia you build is historically accurate. They offer you both yet doesn’t force you to read through the encyclopaedia if you don’t want to.
I don't get it either! But it's IGN, they make the worst reviews ever. Most of their reviewers don't even talk about the gameplay or the quality of the story but the themes the games have. They think their own audience is stupid. If you wanna read good reviews, try Destructoid.
Just cause a game doesn't have any glaring flaws doesn't mean it's perfect. People are very black and white with what they expect from reviewers and it makes no sense. Not everything has to either be bad or perfect. You can think a game has good combat, incredible story, decent graphics and great multiplayer, but just cause all those points are positive ones doesn't automatically make it a 10/10... There are varying levels of bad and good.
Are you kidding IGN? You didn't like the inclusion of historical facts? They were all very interesting and taught me a lot. And they helped set the scene in a lot of areas. And a 7.7? I don't usually play/like indie games but this deserves a higher rating.
If you like this, there is a million indies you haven't given a chance it seems...? Limbo, Journey, Unfinished Swan, Spelunky, Child of Light, Guacamelee, Grow Home, etc are all amazing!
Saying the downside is being bombarded with historical facts is stupid.. That was one one my favorite parts of the game, reading about the reality that actually took place in the cartoon world you play
Just finished it. 8.8 at a minimum. This game is brilliant. How are the historical facts bad? They set the mood and have taught me a lot about WW1 since they don't do it much in school. Also the narration? Are you serious? The tone was perfect. This game is brilliant.Don't listen to this review to anyone looking to buy this game.IGN is full of idiots who give COD 9.0+ every year and give masterpieces a terrible score.
I really don't know what this reviewer was expecting from this game. Probably a side scroller Call of Duty, I guess? I honestly don't understand people who can't enjoy stories being told. Never give him games like BioWare's Dragon Age or Mass Effect series, he'll be bored to death.
What I was trying to say was that this game isn't really as action focused as a game like mass effect which is heavy on fast paced movement and shooting. This is game is more story first fill action in between but I guess thats a matter of opinion
Medhaav Mahesh You do realize these are opinions of the reviewers? There is not "they" one person reviews the games and scores it and IGN will back it up. They don't sit there and compare every games scores and rate games that way... Anyway, the guy that reviewed AC said he had no major issues when he played the game which sense since most of the bugs were on the PC.
terrible review. In no way did I find the historical facts of this game intrusive. In fact, I probably have learned more about The Great War from this than I have from other information sources.
This game achieved something just about no other game has ever achieved - it presented a moving story that was educational and still worked as a game in its own right. It's simultaneously the only game that's ever made me cry and taught me something meaningful about history. Criticising it for the inclusion of historical notes in an optional menu is so misguided it's baffling. It was literally the whole point in the game to show you the history and it was done brilliantly. Nor would you ever, contrary to what this video says, have understood the proper historical background without them - how on earth are you supposed to get the full significance of the Nivelle Offensive, for instance, from a level where you're just running up a hill? Honestly, the whole thing sounds like it was put together by an intern who had no clue what they were reviewing and felt they had to throw some criticism in because they didn't have the confidence to give it too high a score.
It would be nice to see more games set in WWI. It's an era that's not very heavily explored, and unlike WWII and everything past that, it hasn't been done to death.
I just finished the game and like watching reviews after I have beaten the game (just for fun), but I am suprised about the negative points. Heavy narration? Maybe I didn't notice it because I played it in german. Too much historic information? How is it too much? it is completely optional and I found them highly fascinating. Spoiler Warning: Great for you to show such a big spoiler in your review with no warning. I am glad I went blind into that game and feared and struggled for Karl, but you basically show that everything ends up being fine :/
Having been through more than half, it's a great game. There are some annoyances (repetitive puzzle types, the damn throwing mechanic) but all in all it's enjoyable. And I give major props to the developer for working with an era few pay attention to; this was the war that set global standards ON war.
Wow intrusive history as con such ignorance from the reviewer the game was meant to show and educate anyone who plays it the real horrors of war it does not glorify war like most games today instead it offers a powerful human theme IGNorants!!! Sad 7.7 this game is a jewel and it shows that gaming as an art form can be used to educate and show a human point of view in war to its audience.
Educate? while it's a great emotional game, I don't think it's a masterpiece in an educational way while it IS conversely good on educating a bit, it's not THAT good. Plus, your character not having a full uniform on and not even holding a rifle while EVERYONE else do, kinda kills the immersion. It feels like you're some mine worker caught up in a war instead of a soldier. Just because the game is different, it doesn't mean it's masterpiece. 7.7 is good score.
***** I think what ultimatespider17 is saying is that the Game is a jewel, and that the fact that the game has education in it is one of the reasons it shines and should not be a reason to bump down the score. and just for the record. ultimatespider never said anything about the game being a "Masterpiece in an education".
Alejandro Campos True, perhaps I exaggerated a bit, but still, my point remains genuine in a way. since it WILL put you off seeing EVERYONE wear a great uniform and have full equipment while your character (who also DID earn a medal in the process) wears an old shirt, dirty pants and has a shovel instead of a rifle.......I mean, rifle doesn't have to be there for necessarily mowing down enemies, but it makes it more symbolic. The game IS however over-repetitive you must admit. Yes, you do get to pilot a tank, but all you do is go left and right, pick up items and attach them in corresponding order. That gets boring. No to mention, near the end, there's a HUGE siege going on where there are piles of dead bodies, but you don't even wear a uniform and you don't even have a rifle! that totally kills it for me. So, you're telling me that our main character would go into a full fledged battle WITHOUT putting on a uniform and grabbing himself a rifle? that is VERY dense. Our character says that he ''fought'' for his country, but how can you ''FIGHT'' without even firing a single shot? the only man our character actually KILLED in this war was HIS SUPERIOR OFFICER! So, our character have been though WAR.....BATTLES.......without firing a single shot? I'm sorry, but making a ww1 game without guns, is like making a racing game without cars. Puzzle game or not, a rifle is a symbol, which Ubisoft sadly neglected. That's why, while this game is good and HAS a nice soundtrack, is still far from being great. That is all. Also, it is quite biased making Germans mostly look evil.
I bought this game on a whim. Just looking at the art cover and title suggesting it was about the first world war. The gameplay is nothing your 10 year old sister couldn't handle (and this is after playing dark souls). Its more like a pleasant stroll through the park. I'd recommend it as a nice side experience. It won't set your trousers on fire but it just might warm your heart.
Yeah it's a nice game to play when you need a break from dark souls. Not too long or complex but very good story and entertaining music. Sometimes you need a break from the hardcore shit to refresh your brain.
"All this history is so depressing... I mean, come on, guys, I know it's WW1 and it was a time where you had to stuff a piss-soaked clothed to you mouth and nostrils so you wouldn't have your insides rotted by mustard gas AND people drowned in tenches AND the story of Christmas Truce occurred where soldiers from all sides decided to disobey orders and celebrate Christmas with one another by sharing rations and family photos with their enemies they might end up shooting later, but lighten up, ok? CoD really shows that you can actually take somthing as horrible as war and make a profitable and FUN video game about it that continues to sell really really well" - IGN

This guy is among the best reviewers at IGN. He has a wonderfully descriptive and warm tone to his voice. You have plenty of reviewers who are expendable. But please don't let this guy go. I'm downloading this game, purely based on this gentleman's review.
So many people looking at the "pros and cons" section at the end of the video and not what was actually in the review's core. This is one of the reasons I think the "pros and cons" part should removed from IGN's reviews. In part it even seems like IGN thinks its viewers are too dumb to figure out pros and cons by listening to the review.
You are correct the fact people judge so much on that list is crazy but I think it makes sense to tidy up the review at the end with the list. It presents a simple visual summary and it works clearly because so many people are drawn to it. As usual though.. people just bitch n bitch about just the pros n cons without ready the whole review...
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH LMAO!!!!"Ps4 or Pc are the the only way to play in 2015".A lot of people play on xbox and xbox is much better than the ps4.I think what you meant to say is that xbox one and the PC are the only way to play in 2015.
+Aryan Verma I think that... what you say doesn't matter to me because I own all three platforms. So, feel free to continue to be a fanboy :P I'll enjoy all three in the meantime
A large quantity of commenter's basing the game's overall quality purely from it's end score, rather than actually paying attention to the content of the full review. Every point made by this reviewer is perfectly valid and supported. Does this game deserve perhaps a slightly higher score? To some, that may be the case (Myself included) but that doesn't mean that this whole review is invalid. This is good game and most certainly has "a big heart" as stated in the review. I'd hate to think how many people miss out on great games due to purely basing their purchase around 'overall' review scores rather than the actual content included within a review! Rant over :)
The game is good. Nothing more and nothing else. People that say that its one of the best games ever are just being emotional because of the POWERFUL ending. Please, lets be pragmatic when reviewing the game. Valiant hearts is composed of 4 chapters. Review each chapter independently without thinking of the ending, divide the score by 4, and that would be a fair score (even though its very hard not to be biased by the ending). Here is my review Chapter 1 - 5 Chapter 2 - 5 Chapter 3 - 7 Chapter 4 - 9 6,5 would be my score of the game as whole. The first two chapters, IN MY OPINION, where boring. Simple puzzles. It was basically just moving forward without any involvement. Chapter 3 picks up, and ends in a great way. Chapter 4 was a whole different beast. I would recommend the game just for Chapter 4 alone, which must be experienced. Its a very powerful finale and it deserves to be part of a whole different game.
This is by far one of the best games i have played this year. Not for the fact that its something different from the typical FPS crap. But it does something that only a few rare games are capable of doing, that is creating emotion. Ww1 is something we are all affected by and people of the current generation tend to forget horrific war truely is and modern COD or BF games dont help in this regard. History is our greatest teacher and through interaction, anyone can learn about the war in a different and interesting way. So why is everyone winging about it, appriciate it for what it is and a solem reminder of how lucky we really are that we dont ever have to go through such horrors again.
Why would IGN keep a review up that spoils a major death in the game!?! And mark it down for historical facts - one of the best features of the friggin game.
This game is fantastic, it's breath of fresh air. The setting, the art style, the story, the gameplay it's all well done. The review is so ridiculous, "heavy narration" ????? It's not even that heavy, he makes it sound like it's BioMutant.
I found the narrative and ingame information to be very enjoyable. Not only for it's direct learning, but revisiting historical facts from some Canadian fronts. Is this something I would like to see in a classroom? Perhaps so, not like every educational game has to be cut-and-dry or is simply good for it's mechanics.
The music on the inventory/info tab is beautiful. Don't normally play these kind of games but this is a lush game with gorgeous art and fantastic production from start to finish, this random nobody gives it a 10/10 & mr person's seal of approval. 👍
Pros: Powerful artsyle; Charaterful Animation; Varied Gameplay Cons: Heavy Narration; Intrusive story Score: 7.7 Welcome to IGN. The website where you find the worst reviews
I found the optional historical facts really interesting actually. I read them every time they popped up and learnt a lot. I never would have found this game if it wasn't free on xbox live, but I will definitely buy the sequel should one come out.
What people are complaining about is how IGN gives games like COD:BO2 (made by a big company) a 9.3 while a great game by a smaller developer gets a 7.7 because of bullshit cons like "optional historical facts".
Camron Parker But who gives a damn? Usually(not always) these big time reviews don't mean a thing. Reviews from actual consumers is what really matters. Watch Dogs got great reviews across the board by big time reviewers, while user scores on metacritic actually talked about it's cons. Honest user reviews will actually show what a game is worth.
I would have given it 9/10, the story is just too good. I sat in my chair crying throughout the credits... I also agree with the other things he said though.
You people are acting pretty dumb. Games don't start at a 10 and then have points deducted! Why does everyone think that? It's so annoying. Scores are ultimately meaningless, but people insist on giving them more weight than they warrant.
I don't care about no review. This was one of the most heart warming games I have ever played. This game made me cry at times and also made me laugh. The music is just flawless in this game and sets the perfect tone for the game. Games like Valiant Hearts shouldn't be rated they should be cherished. For me this game is well above CoD, BF or Halo because these war games might give you heart pumping action but this game will give you a heart touching adventure.
Am i the only one who loves great indie games like valiant heart and journey, but also like the big shooters like call of duty? It just seems like everyone is so black and white and you either love cod and hate narrative games, puzzle games, indie games, and other classics, or you love those and hate AAA shooters. I hate that whenever I say I enjoy playing some cod, people always assume that I am some 10 year old who just screams at their mic and throws their controller. I have yet to see one person who comments about how they enjoy both, and not just on youtube but on other sites as well, I hope this can change and we can see more hybrid-ish gamers in the future... Or maybe everyone just hates people like me and thats why it seems as if there are so little of these types of people I know this comment doesn't really go with the review but I keep seeing comments below talking about call of duty so I just thought this could be fitting
Instructive history is a con are you serious right now? So you're saying that a historical factor that educates you is a downfall to the game? Good job IGN...really good job
I hate when reviewers give scores in decimals. Like now people are going to be be saying "didn't that get like a 7 so it's ok" without realizing it was a 7.7. Which is really close to an 8. Just please give things whole numbers. Can't wait to play this game! Thought they did a fantastic job with the E3 trailer!
OK IGN,so,Assassin's Creed Unity gets a 7.8 out of 10 even though it ran like baby shat on all 3 platforms, but gets a pass because it's fucking Assassin's Creed, but Valiant Hearts,a true, honest and emotional piece of gaming art that shows the horrors of war and the lives that destroyed people both mentally and phisically, gets a 7.7 out of 10 because it had a heavy narration...then what the f*ck you wanted IGN,a Disney-like story set in World War 1,mixed with 2D side scrolling shooter and a Co-Op mode?Stop praising Triple A games despite them being shit just because "they're Triple A games".Look,I may be bitching about a .1,but these days I feel like reviewers are just playing favoritism,AC:Unity may be a good game, but Valiant Hearts did more than AC Unity and it's action packed, almost rambo-like take on the French Revolution.
For anyone who hasn't played this game yet, don't listen to this review! this game is a masterpiece, it's a lovely adventure through a time that is not looked upon by many. And it's definitely one of those games that you will carry with you for the rest of your lives and even pass it along to your children.
3:50 - You are so wrong.. ..this for me is the bones of the experience. 'Valiant Heart's' is a creative Masterpiece, if you haven't played it yourself, don't experience this second hand - add it to your collection, you will not regret it.
i'd give it an 8.5. i agree with most of the pros, but one of the big things that i looked forward to was reading the historical facts, especially because one of my great uncles fought and died in ww1.
I must say this deserves a 9.8 or higher, but he'll no anywhere else is too low, hell the first time I saw this game I was like "meh" then I saw its glory and just weeper tears of joy... And sadness.
I usually don't mind scores, buit c'mon IGN. Games like this, is what make our hopes still alive in the current state of the game industry - shout out to CoD. From what i've seen so far, this game is very well designed, and a breath of fresh air to WW games.
Seriously, people calm down. It's the reviewers own opnion and might be that he didn't like this game so much as he told but might be that he's trying to recommend this game by praising this game very much. 7.7 isn't very bad score.
IGN should just disable comments on their videos. The comment section is always filled with a bunch of idiots that just complain about the score and the few bullet points. They don't examine the actual content of the review, and their egos are so fragile that they can't handle the fact the somone else's opinion is different than their own.
Dev518 I guess you're pretty IGNorant to understand how IGN reviews their games now, how else do you think they gave piles of wank like the latest COD games and AC unity good reviews? I'll give you three guesses, take your time.
So his only cons are extremely miniscule in the grand scheme of what he obviously believes is an amazing game and yet it scores less than almost every major AAA game? Gaming journalism: because who wants actual reviews when we can tell you how much the company bribed us.
By far one of the worst ratings IGN has ever done this game easily would get a 8 or 9 in my book it's one of the only games that actually got me to cry and also had some nice comedic moments in there as well. The story was perfect and extremely well done would have liked another one in maybe WWII or the American civil war but Ubisoft doesn't know something good if it hit them in the face.
