Valletta is the capital city of Malta. It is located in the central-eastern portion of the island of Malta, and the historical city has a population of 6,444. Valletta is the smallest national capital in the European Union by population. Valletta was founded in 1566 by the Knights of St. John, a Roman Catholic military order. The city is named after Grand Master Jean Parisot de la Valette. The city is built on a peninsula and is surrounded by two harbors. Valletta is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is known for its historical and cultural significance. The city is home to several palaces, churches, and fortifications, including the St. John's Co-Cathedral, the Grandmaster's Palace, and the Fortifications of Valletta.
