The Valley Railroad has long been a mainstay of steam operations in Connecticut for over 50 years, with a total fleet of three operational steam locomotives. During the summer months, the railroad operates daily service (rain or shine) between Essex Station and just north of Hadlyme, offering a leisurely 12 mile round trip, with an option to disembark at Deep River for a Riverboat cruise along the Connecticut River. In this video, former Aberdeen & Rockfish 1920 ALCO-built 2-8-2 "Mikado" #40 is at the head of the excursions, often recognized as the "flagship" engine of the historic operation.
