VALORANT EXPERIMENTAL SHARPENING Explained

UPDATE: NVIDIA has removed the Sharpness setting in NVIDIA Control Panel. You can re-enable it back by modifying:
\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services
vlddmkm\FTS
EnableGR535= 0x00000000 (0)
You can of course still turn up Sharpness using the monitor hardware buttons on your monitor.
UPDATE: As of Patch 1.11
Setting has been renamed to (Beta) Experimental Sharpening and it's effect has been slightly reduced (equivalent to 0.5 on Nvidia Sharpening setting). Also Riot has decided NOT to remove the setting and keep it available for you as they continue to test it.
NOTE: You MUST restart Valorant for NVIDIA Control Panel settings to take effect!
NOTE: Most "Gaming Monitors" should be able to able to handle Sharpness without introducing noticeable ghosting.
What does the new setting Experimental Sharpening in Valorant do?
It makes textures and edges sharper, more crisp, and more vibrant. Effectively making visuals in the game "pop" more and yes that does mean enemy agents "pop" more as well.
The technical explanation of Sharpening is this:
If we take numbers to represent the shade of grey with 0 being white and 10 being black and we represent a series of pixels as 3-3-3-7-7-7-3-3-3. If we were to increase the Sharpness on this row of pixels the resulting numbers would be 3-3-2-7-8-7-2-3-3 effectively increase the range of color/shade as well as increasing the abruptness in color/shade changes between pixels.

doesnt sharpening filter used from nvidia control panel add more input lag than the one in game?
@ALBUPerformance
@ALBUPerformance Месяц назад
Technically any additional post processing including Image Sharpening will add some latency. However, I find using NVIDIA Image Sharpening is generally much better than the in-game equivalent setting in the majority of games I've tested. For Valorant in particular it's important to also note that the visual quality of Beta Experimental Sharpening is different than NVIDIA Image Sharpening. Not vastly different but certainly not the same. I would assume that this additional post processing of the image Valorant is doing is what causes more latency.
@BeowulfGaming
@BeowulfGaming Месяц назад
@@ALBUPerformance you might be right! i also noticed something that i find a bit odd, when a game supports nvidia freestyle filters, and you add sharpen or sharpen+ I lose like 10% fps just by having the filters on, but when i add the image sharpening via control panel to that executable application of the game, my fps remains the same and i am getting the same amount of sharpening on the image. Same thing, different method, same results image-wise but one tanks fps the other does not. How is it possible huh?

Several methods. Most primitive one is sticky notes on the monitor as markers. But on the more sophisticated side I have an external piece of equipment that can record mouse movements. There is also software that does the same but they never work, if game developers didn't block these they'd be used to cheat.

They decided to keep the setting since people liked it. They also updated it so it's less borderlands and might perform better. They slapped a [BETA] tag on it, so I assume they will keep working on it. I was trying to use this setting in 1.10 and I didn't like it as much, but I like it better in 1.11.

@@ALBUPerformance i don't get it why they replaced it tho. Now it's feels like new sharpening intended only for not native resolutions. I've tried it on Valorant yesterday, and it looks bad, and some of NVidia panel's 3d settings, probably messes with it, because at first image was superoversharped regardless of selected value, it seems start working as intended when i resetted NVidia settings for Valorant. But it still worse than built -in sharpening, also when i enabled it back (experimental sharpening) it for some reason start looking less intrusive than before, maybe it just because i watched oversharped image previously, I'm not sure. Also built-in sharpening seems to not affect text (and if I'm right it's even better than other methods that just add sharpen to all image)

Thx for the vid my boy
@ALBUPerformance
@ALBUPerformance 3 года назад
Hi SkyWord. Yes you should use the NVIDIA solution because you'll have a higher framerate. The ghosting is really up to you. If it's not enough to bother you, then use sharpening. If you want to reduce the ghosting you can either reduce the amount of sharpening (in NVIDIA). Alternatively you could reduce ghosting through your monitor settings by turning down the brightness, contrast, and/or vibrancy of the colors. Often monitors have a preset for this named FPS Mode or similar which will make the colors more greyish.
@skyword9177
@skyword9177 3 года назад
@@ALBUPerformance thx man i rarely saw a youtuber answer my comment that quickly 👌 Its my new setup so thats weird to go to 60 fps to 160 to 220 fps average and the ghosting distract me a bit but, when i turn the experimental sharpening (with my 4ms monitor) its distract me way less than when i turn it off. The problem is that the ghosting can be really persisting when i have an irregular fps rate. Also, I have an fps mode on my monitor but does it help to reduce ghosting ? (Also can you do a video to help reducing ghosting for some high refresh rate monitor like 240hz one who will be more present than a 144hz one for exemple) Its would be amazing and I would very greatful to you if you do a tutorial one this ! Anyway, hope you will have an amazing day 😆
@ALBUPerformance
@ALBUPerformance 3 года назад
@SkyWord Yes, the FPS mode will help reduce ghosting. I'm starting to suspect your ghosting may actually be due to something else. Ghosting on a 240hz isn't particularly common. So I'm gonna take a straight stab at it in case I'm right: Can you look through the monitor settings and try to find a setting called "response time". If you do find it, set it to "Normal" and that should fix your ghosting.

NVIDIA replaced it with a setting called "Image Scaling" which, when enabled, will once again give you a "Sharpness Meter" that you can use to increase sharpness. It is not the same as the original, and merits another video as it's actually a bit of a complicated setting. However, you can still use it to increase sharpness, or you can use your monitors hardware buttons.

GUYS I CAN'T FIND IMAGE SHARPENNING IN MY NVIDIA CONTROL PANEL DOES IT STILL WORK?
@ALBUPerformance
@ALBUPerformance 2 года назад
Yes it does. There is several reasons you might be missing the setting: 1) The most common reason is due to a windows bug related to using multiple monitors. To fix this bug, just set your display settings to only your primary monitor and reset the computer, and you can re-enable your other monitors after restarting and you should retain the image sharpening setting. If the above fix doesn't work, just reinstall the NVIDIA drivers.

The differences are too minor to justify doing every video twice and would essentially be the same recommendations. Aside from DLSS vs FSR and raytracing settings, it's extremely rare the performance differences when changing a setting would actually change the final recommendation. Same goes for the visual differences - obviously with the exception of DLSS/FSR/Raytracing. I will likely start adding AMD testing in the videos mainly for FSR but in the meantime I will mention DLSS is superior.

will it work on 5ms monitor
@ALBUPerformance
@ALBUPerformance Год назад
Good question. The visual effect will be worse with higher response time monitors. I'd say starting at about 5ms or higher you should not use Experimental Sharpening. High ms response time monitors struggle to change a pixel fast enough which creates a visual trail on sharp edges. Increasing sharpness would make these "trails" longer and more pronounced.

@ALBUPerformance

Summary at end of video. TLDR: It's not worth the large FPS drop. If you really like the effect of Exp. Sharpening you're better off use the alternative options I show which have no performance cost or almost insignificant cost.

@@ALBUPerformance Hi, on Nvidia there is a new sharpness filter. Is it like the last filter ? Or it costs more performance ?
@ALBUPerformance
@ALBUPerformance Год назад
Hi Raph. You shouldn't use the new sharpness filter from NVIDIA (the one under image scaling). It works very differently and is designed to improve upscaling or supersampling situations - such as with DLSS). You can re-enable the Sharpness option that NVIDIA removed via: START > Regedit > \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services vlddmkm\FTS EnableGR535= 0x00000000 (0)

The minimum spec for Valorant (according to Riot) is Intel HD Graphics 3000 and you have an Intel HD 2500. Performance will always be "limited" on that system unless you upgrade. You should set everything to disabled/low on such a system and hopefully it's playable.
