Valparaiso Travel Guide - Exploring Chile's Cultural Capital Video Transcript:
So, hello from Valparaiso. That means paradise on the valley. We have a few days to explore the city and we're planning to do most of it on foot. Yes, and most of it is going up hills as well. And there is so much cool street art here. So we're going to be taking a few different walking tours while we're in town. Today we're doing the first one which should be an overview of the city. And it should be fun. So we're going to take you on a little guided tour of Valparaiso. Yee-haw!
To say Valparaiso is a bit hilly would be an understatement. The city is a maze of steep inclines which means the best way to get around and save your legs for sightseeing, is by riding up and down the funiculars. It might seem a bit daunting considering some of these are well over a hundred years old, but they still do the job.
And this is our friend the pup who has joined our tour. She's the official bodyguard. And she knows where the funiculars are located so she took the stairs instead. Hi, pup. You're sweet aren't you? Yes, you are. Yes, you are. Yes, you are.
If we can offer one recommendation for visiting Valparaiso, it would be to join one of the free walking tours towards the beginning of your stay. This is a great way to get some background history and to familiarize yourself with the various neighbourhoods. The local guides know where to find the best murals, so consider this a scouting mission. You can always come back with a bit more time to explore the area with your camera in hand.
Apparently, there are 42 hills in the city and we're just exploring it for the first time today. And my first impressions are so much better now that we're seeing this cool part. It is so colorful, so artsy and lots of fun to check out. Exactly.
Another thing we really enjoyed about our walking tour of Valparaiso, was the company of all the dogs. Valparaiso has a lot of strays roaming the streets, but we found the dogs to be super friendly and affectionate. We also noticed locals feeding dogs.
We're having a little food break. I think we're going to try some empanadas. And I see that they have shrimp ones on the menu. Shrimp and cheese empanadas so those should be really tasty.
The harbor tours depart from Muelle Prat as soon as they get a boat-full of passengers. During the outing you’ll go past container ships, tug boats, and navy vessels, plus you’ll also have a guide on-board to point out sights along the way.
Viña del Mar is a super quick day trip from Valparaiso. The two cities are only 8 kilometers apart and you can easily get there with the above ground metro system that runs along the beach. It’s only a 15 minute ride, and it’s quite the change in scenery. Whereas Valparaiso is colorful, artsy, and gritty, Viña del Mar is a bit more chic and modern. That being said, while we enjoyed our day trip to Viña del Mar, we were really glad we decided to stay in Valparaiso as we felt it had way more character.
So our time in Valparaiso is coming to an end. What are your final thoughts of the place? Yeah, that is a wrap from here. I loved it here. It was one of the coolest cities that I think we've visited on this entire South America trip. We have to show you the views from our balcony. Look at that. You get to see the hills, the colorful hills. Bye Valparaiso.
Our visit Valparaiso travel guide covers some of the top attractions including the best in arts, entertainment, museums, nightlife and restaurants (Cocina Chilena). We also cover off-the-beaten-path activities that you won't find in your typical tourism brochure or Santiago city guide.
This is part of our Travel in Chile series. We're making a series of videos showcasing Chilean culture, Chilean arts, Chilean foods, Chilean religion, Chilean cuisine and Chilean people.

Valparaiso reminds me of San Francisco a bit. The colorful architecture, the Pacific coast, the hills, the cable car, and the hippie vibe with the colorful graffiti. Though it does seem grungier and less well-maintained with lots of stray dogs.

I love your videos! I'm from Argentina (probably that's why I love them) and I went to Chile last summer, I went to a lot of cities there but I fell in love with Valparaíso, sooo badly. And now, watching this video in which you visit the same places that I visited (I even also took the train to go to Viña just for one day) made me almost cry, the pictures I took didn't capture the magic of this city as this video did. Thank you. A little sugestion: could you change the color of the subtitles? Most of the time I can't read it well.
@samuelandaudrey
@samuelandaudrey 8 лет назад
Thank you! That is cool to hear. Yeah, we really enjoyed it as well. It is just the laid back nature of the city and all of the colors and artsy vibe it has. I hope you can revisit again soon. Sorry about the subtitles. Unfortunately, I think only RU-vid controls the color and I wish they'd offer more than just white.

Great video. I was there a few weeks ago (staying in Santiago, only had a day visit to Valparaiso) and loved it. I'm planning to return to Chile next February for at least 2 weeks, preferably 3, to spend more time exploring Chile with my friends who live there. All I need to do now is learn Spanish as that was the only thing I struggled with. My friends and I also sat on those 'happies not hippies' steps. I really fell in love (in more ways than one) with Chile.

Valparaiso was a great city before the dictatorship in 1973. Many factories had their activities there and people had jobs. After the dictatorship things changed. Neoliberalism hit hard to the economy and all the zone became poor. The most of people who is living here now has lows salaries. People and factories start moving to Santiago because there people could find good occupations and make a good living. Valparaiso is a forgotten city now. No factories, no jobs and this situation has lead to much poverty. However the city had tried to survive in many ways, for instance, turism, and that is good for the citizens and the city. Maybe I can compare Valparaiso s situacion with what happened in Detroit in the past. Not exactly in the same way but almost. Anyway I think this city is a mix of many things: authentic, colourful and has a big character. You as a tourist will be surprised in many ways. And I forgot name the frendly people, the climate in summer and the wine. Be careful with your belongings because there are many thieves around the town. Don' t show much of all they could be interested of and you are not going to have problem. Barcelona is 100 times worse.
@falloutrains2641
@falloutrains2641 7 лет назад
I agree, Valparaiso is now a shell of it's former glory. But I think it gives it some kind of nostalgic charm. Read Neruda's Ode to Valparaiso. There you'll find that 'The Port' is still a city that simply refuses to fall. Fires, Storms, Floods, Earthquakes; yet every single time, Valparaiso picks herself up, and carries on.

Is it safe to pet all these stray dogs? Do they get a health check once in a while? Not sure about the graffitis either. I like the colourful look of Valparaiso, but in my city there's a lively graffiti scene too and the war between the crews to outdo each other is annoying to us outsiders.
@samuelandaudrey
@samuelandaudrey 8 лет назад
+Flag "first", "sandstorm" and "301 club" comments as spam for a surprise In terms of the dogs being friendly enough to pet we never once encountered one that barked or resisted. They're definitely not all healthy though. I guess you need to use your discretion given the situation. If we've been petting dogs we wash our hands thoroughly before eating our next meal. The graffiti for the most part is quite tasteful here. It is kind of part of the charm of the city.

As a Chilean that lives in Sweden i would not recommend Chile as a destination for vacation in Southamerica, Santiago has together with 2 other cities like Valparaiso and Viña many pickpockets/thiefs. Not to mention that violence against women are high rated in Chile. Not to mention if you wanna enjoy a dinner outside of a resturang be prepared for dirty tricks from people begging for money, not to mention that after sundown its dangerous.

Really? I've read that Chile is one of the safest countries in South America. Where would you recommend to visit in South America that is safe for women?

@@planetruther Chile it is one of the safest countries in south america. I live here and travel a lot and I've never been mugged or robbed. you have to use common sense and you'll be fine. I think this guy is overreacting.

@@Valeria-cz9et thank you! I am a younger, blonde, pale-skinned woman and feel like I will stand out like a sore thumb. Do you have any particular tips for my husband and I to stay safe even though we can't really blend in. We will not be dressing fancy or wearing any jewelry or cameras. We will only bring the cash that we need for the day. However, I am still worried because a retired professor from my university here in Vancouver, Canada was stabbed and killed in Valparaiso last month while walking with his wife and young daughter. :(

@@planetruther Yes, that Canadian thing was very much discussed here in Chile, it's not something that happen very often. I'm in Valparaíso right now and it's full with cops. Also a lot of tourist from all over the world. You have to be smart and avoid non touristic streets, lonely streets at night. Avoid carry around big expensive cameras. Keep and eye on your suitcase and backpack all the time in the street. But if you travel north or south Chile it's much more safety, the places with more crime are Santiago and valparaiso.

@@Valeria-cz9et Thank you for your replies! After a few days in Santiago/Valparaiso we will fly to Iquique and will spend 2 weeks there. We are paragliding pilots and will be going there to fly the dunes. Do you have any safety tips for Iquique? Any particular neighborhoods to stay away from? Or any especially safe and nice neighborhoods where we should look for an AirBnB in Iquique? :) Thank you so much for the info!
