Value or tonal studies are challenging for me. But they are great exercises into thinking about art, contrast, structure. It's like solving a puzzle or mystery and when it clicks, it's wonderful.

Monochrome studies are simultaneously incredibly hard and very easy. It is really weird

Thanks for the value studies. I especially appreciate that you posted the reference photo which allowed me to open it in another window and compare it to each study. It made a big difference.

I find this really hard as well. Love that you did several variations at once. 😊

I really like your quick drawing style. I find myself quite frustrated whenever I am doing a project that is realistic, or "accurate". But seeing this has inspired me to embrace my style, which is super quick and fun, not necessarily "accurate" or "perfect". Thanks for the video!!! Once again great information to help me become better :)

Your study in the lower left-hang corner reminds me of a night scene with a very dark sky, a mid-tone building and highly lit up street. Thanks for showing one how to visualize a scene in more than one way. It will help me decide how to best paint a scene.

Fantastic value study/explanation. More please. I am doing value studies now - trying to understand water, pigment and values. I love the 4 different studies. The different combinations-makes so much sense. Plus waiting till each dries. We don’t often see dry art just the vibrant wet so I don’t often understand how my art is supposed to look.🙏🙏

Really great video, and also an other watercolor artist that I feel is great with values is Wendy Artin. She usually paint only with Sepia and her precision is quite unbelievable.

this is interesting. and Id have hard time doing this, but i see where it can help us learn values, shades color hues, but also adds imagination, and like a recreation of the drawing, contrast is a teaching method, as so is the structure here,

Thanks for this video, I have trouble with values and I always end up adding too much color, for shadow, it makes my painting look like I spilled some paint on it so i avoid shadows xoxo

This is very informative and helpful! thanks!! :) i struggle with value studies too. one tip that i've heard of (but can't apply very well yet) is to squint your eyes to see what looks dark and light and use those values relatively for contrast.

i find this easier in opaque mediums where you can mix up your values prior, i cant get used to using the white of the paper in watercolour.

Yeah.... Because watercolour paper is so goddamed expensive I feel compelled to put paint and add colour to every available space! 🤦

Hi Teoh YI Chie. I hope you are doing good. I want to learn about painting and I have no clue where to start, is it a pencil is its color. My plan is for Landscape and I love to play with colors. I need your suggestion and also a suggestion about books. What kit I need as a beginner. I know there is a lot of questions but I hope you will guide me.
