This is a very inexpensive fix that you guys can do yourself by just having a basic socket set and feeler gadget. Do not be afraid to get in there and make these adjustments if your car is sounding very loud and almost has a clicking sound. Thank you guys so much for watching a supporting my efforts in making these adjustments easier for you guys to do yourselves. Be careful and have fun!

I used this video a few times for reference while doing this on my car. I hadn't seen turning the cam with the power steering bolt and realized my power steering belt was loose trying it this way instead of jacking up the car and turning the bolt on the crank. I appreciate the help you gave with your video. Don't worry about accidentally turning bolts the wrong way, I totally catch myself doing it too lol. Take care!

Not hard to do but i did one on my 2.3. To add, adjust on the base circle of the cam. So right when the intake closes on #1, your exhaust is on the base circle. Adjust exhaust. Turn camshaft 90° and it will make the intake will be on the base lobe. Adjust. Then go straight to #3 and slightly adjust to just close the intake and adjust exhaust. Then 4, then 2. The feeler guage should still go back in but not fall out when let go of. Wish you luck this made mine run buttery smooth 👍 P.s. if you cant see the intake lobe just reference the big center lobe behind the spark tube. Much easier to see.

No need to remove the top timing cover, or even the distributor cap for that matter. Loosen all the plugs except for the one your doing the valve adjustment for, then rotate the engine untill you feel the compression, then adjust valves for that cylinder repeat the same process for the next cylinder. For each cylinder adjusted, loosen the plug, and then tighten the plug for the next cylinder to be adjusted, then rotate engine again. No need to be exactly on TDC for each cylinder either, so long as it's anywhere in the compression stroke area, you're good to go for adjustment.

I did the valve adjustment, it was super quite and smooth before, it's still smoothish, considering the misfire, but the rocker noise is rather surprising now. 99.9% certain i did it right. any thoughts? any body? bueler? bueler?

I'm aware of the firing order, maybe you misunderstood my question. Up on the timing gear is cyl 1, but there are 6 spokes on the entire gear, so, as I originally asked my dumb, not so dumb question, I know that not every spoke corresponds with a cylinder, or if it does, which one is and isn't tdc with each cylinder?

@Smokinskittles
@Smokinskittles 2 года назад
It well I mean if there is too much play between the rocker arm and the valve stem it starts making noise and it’s really annoying. So if you hear it a constant ticking sound this is what it could be
@Smokinskittles
@Smokinskittles 2 года назад
This is what I found on google and it probably explains it better than I can. Too much clearance means the valves will likely clatter and, over the long term, cause damage to the valves, camshaft lobes or rocker arms. If there's too little valve clearance, the valves won't fully close, causing excessive heat, and the engine will lose power.

@truthseeker1203
@truthseeker1203 2 года назад
Did you ever figure that out? I could be wrong but I’m pretty sure top dead center only applies to the arrow facing up. Atleast that’s how the timing belt change procedure works, bottom crankshaft notch lines up and two side notches on camshaft pulley line up with top of cylinder head.
@VinnieVega76
@VinnieVega76 2 года назад

But looked at distributor rotor and it was facing #1 spark plug so I just rolled with it, the cars fine. Idk if there’s technically a top dead center for each cylinder, I’d assume that arrow facing up IS tdc for cylinder #1 and that the arrow facing left is TDC for #3 so on and so forth but maybe I’m wrong who tf knows.

SmokinSkittles another question....I’ve never done a timing belt and water pump job before...it looks kind of easy to do but I guess what always gets me nervous is making sure the pullies are aligned how they’re supposed to. It’s like I’m afraid to do it wrong and mess the motor up...am I just overthinking it and should I just jump into doing it or should I just take it to a shop?

What's the consequences of turning the crank shaft clockwise, instead of counterclockwise?
@Chunnie02
@Chunnie02 5 лет назад
Lucky Gray you won’t have the cylinder and valves correct. Basically you’re adjusting the valves so when they open and close the intake combustion power and exhaust strokes have optimal clearances. Too little and you can bend a valve and you basically can crack a piston or damage the head. Or too much clearance and you’re basically rattling the head apart. Neither are good and the latter can cause misfiring like no other. It’s also the relation to the camshaft and the duration of the lobes to lifter. So rotating the crank the right way in relation to the valves is key
@Smokinskittles

I read it was mainly cuz of the belt and the way that it’s used to having tension on one side and the other not also heard the
@Chunnie02
@Chunnie02 5 лет назад
SmokinSkittles the belt doesn’t really have anything to do with it. There’s a timing belt for the cam and the crank and has to be set properly for timing. The balance shaft belt which also needs to have the balancing pulleys in the correct position along with the crank. Then there’s the accessory drive belts that go to alternator, ac and the harmonic on the crank. Then the outer v belt runs the power steering off the harmonic and the crank. Typically when you move the power steering belt it “should” move the crank but this isn’t always the case of which the crank will need to be turned manually. Belts are to synchronize but in terms of valve lash you need to make the valves open and close properly in conjunction with the cam. The valve is held by keepers essentially and a locking nut on top. The minute you loosen it and it’s not turned over say on the wrong stroke you can misadjust the valve and it can either hit the top of the piston or it won’t close all the way and seat right. Compression requires both valves to be closed and sealed on the interference angle of the valve seat. There’s a lot that goes into the head and adjusting it the wrong way or turning it the wrong way you can easily think it’s on the compression stroke but it’s not. Dropping a valve can cause a piston to shatter and in turn blowing a connecting rod out the side of the block or down into the pan along with bearings and parts of the crank bore. Or bend and cause irreparable damage to the head or heads.

I wish I could've seen you actually unscrewing and taking off the upper timing cover because I'm having the worst luck getting mine off. I got the right screw off with no problem but the left screw will keep turning but not come out. It is in such a tight space that I can't get pliers or anything on it to help pull it out. I'm hoping someone here has any clue on what to do. My car has been sitting for a long time because I can't get that darn thing off. I'm in the process of giving the car a tune-up and I had to replace some seals in the rocker assembly which is why I'm doing this.

Sounds like your bolt is stripped out.. is the head of the bolt worn? You may have to cut a slit into it and use a flat head.

@@RachelLeemon oh I know the bolt you’re referring to, I dealt with the same one today actually, and was never able to remove it unfortunately. I was trying to check the crankshaft seal. The right one came off easy but the left just turns and turns. The dipstick doesn’t have enough play even with the bolt removed to get out the way. Socket barely even fits through there. It’s frustrating
