This rebuild series is perfect. You can see that jake is putting a lot of efort in it. Explaining all the stuff really easy and understandable, and there is always something funny in the videos. Aand they have they are not to long so you can really enjoy them. Keep up the nice work. Sry if I spelled something wrong english isnt my main language.
I really enjoy watching these build series videos, gives me a glips of how to maintain my bike properly and most importantly shows me how I could do it myself
I had an OHV engine in one of my cars once, with it's fun overrun, put it in gear and drop the clutch to switch it off. And the good old CVH engines Ford used to use, they were awesome because they were so easy to strip and rebuild. I had one of the rockers snap clean in half once, how rare must that be.
I worked at a dealership some years ago for a short time in parts/service. One of the mechanics there had a highly modified XR650R. He'd put a bigger carb on it with a "pumper" feature that fed the engine with everything he wanted when whacking the throttle. He'd also dyno tuned it. I don't know what horsepower it was putting out but it was pretty stupid quick and the loud pipe sounded amazing under heavy throttle.
How my diesel tech teacher taught us to do a Valve adjustment was by giving us the shortest flat head he had and then he'd have us put the correct feeler gauge in and told us to take the flat head with your index, middle finger, and thumb and tighten it really tight to see what it felt like and then loosen it until it was too loose and then basically snap your fingers. Have been doin it ever since and I've never had a bad adjustment.
I wish I had this video a year ago! At least I'm absolutely sure I'm doing it correctly now. My Monster collects dust now that I have a xr650r sumo; excellent build!
I like to use 1 or 2 sizes too big on the feeler gauge, tighten the nut, then check with the correct gauge. If you find the right size, it works pretty easily.
@@TheGardenSnake i'm stroking my 20 year old gauge set right now. Jake will never hurt you buddy. I'm used to using .020 and .040 tolerances though, bit easier to keep alive!
This home is going to be badass... I have a 2018 KTM 690 that I want to supermoto. Watching this build is making me itch to try and do the build now lol Great content
Sometimes I wish my ktm had these non-shim adjusters... seems easy and no need to order new shims but realise that every shop is closed due to it is sunday, and you're left on that sunday with out a ride...
Awesome vid Jake, am going to have to do a valve check on my new Beta Alp 4.0 (Suzuki DR350 engine) in a few weeks, so seeing this have made it a lot less daunting (last time I did a valve check was back in 1991 on a Honda CB100N :D
This helped me so much! Trying to fix a 92 dr350 and she got a decomp lever but still a bitch to start. Also was nervous about trying this but now im dumb confident that i can do it. Love the channel keep it up
Cool vid... the Cam should be facing down and forward at top dead centre and you can use that nub that points down on the inside on cast on top of casing behind the flywheel cover as a top dead centre mark aswel,,, pumper carb is way to go 😎
Nice video, definitely confirms that I did my valves right. I had to do 8 on my 454 LTD. It really is all about feel, theirs no way to actually explain it. Will be looking to do my KLR at some point in the future and it should probably be almost identical to this. But how often do you want to clearance check valves?
Like they said. Motor showed good compression and I’ve got enough going on with this build already. I’ll see how it runs and maybe that’s something to look at later. If I did build the motor I’d want to keep it reliable so I probably wouldn’t be doing a bunch of crazy stuff. Mainly freshening it up.
@@TheGardenSnake yesterday i watched a video vhere guys rebuilded 4T ktm motor with idealy looking piston and with factory honing marks on cylinder walls, because manual said that..
when I took my 650r apart the compression was great but hard to start the vavles and seats were real worn ended up porting and polishing and sent the head out slapped in a piston while I was in there just food for thought ps they like to burn oil@@TheGardenSnake
The adjuster on that tight intake valve looks backed way off already. I hope the seat isn't beat up too bad already. My buddy has had to have a TON of head work on his 650L. But then again it wasn't really happy about the high compression pistons, etc he was running.
Reseating valves is easily done at home if needed, if they are to bad it's probably best to get another used head or a new one if you like, they are probably okay.
@@HalfdeadRider - just take the head to the nearest automotive machine shop, tell them about the tighties - they probably put in new hardened seats and cut everything proper angles, new seals, set the spring heights & check spring pressures. All for pretty cheap.
@@bumtracksNew I'd bet you a good second hand head would be cheaper (£250), if anything major like that actually needed doing it would cost more in labour alone. This engine looks in good nick, I reckon it's all good but again if it seemed a little worse for ware, Jake would probably reseat the valves and replace the valve stem seals. It's super easy and only take 30 mins or so, a bit more including stripping it down and only cost a few £/$.
@@TheGardenSnake I just had a chance to watch on a bigger screen and you're right, they're even at about 5 threads showing each. I guess watching on my phone made it look backed off more. Either way, you're making me want a Pig of my own..
Yeah I know that using metric and using imperial system is quite an opinion question but I bet that you find metric measurements easier to calculate than imperial ones...
Just bought an Xr650r a couple weeks ago. What does it mean if I loosened the adjuster screw all the way and the feeler gauge still won’t fit? I can see the spring traveling up and down when I adjust that screw. Bike was running quite well and starting second or third kick.
Just turn the screw till it touches very gently... then turn it back 1/6th of a turn, or one point on the nut, then crank the nut down... perfect every time.
9:01 is what mahfs have been searching for!!! Many vids out there yes, but NONE that show this so clearly and with EXACT demonstration of adjustment.Seriously Jake.....ThankZ -SunnyVale Lock
Jake, there is a 2006 Xr650r for sale near me. Would you recommend buying it? The list price is $3300. I would probably offer a bit less than that. The only mods I can see from the pictures and from the listing itself is a 5 gallon “transparent” tank. I would probably turn it into a supermoto eventually once I save up the money for the parts.
Michael J. Burns II go on Facebook and join the group XR650R riders. I see people selling stock bikes as low as $2500. I bought a full supermoto build 2002 XR650R for $3000.
Why don't you just use the timing marks on the flywheel and engine case? How often are you planning valve adjustments? I do my XR650R valves every 500 miles with an oil/filter change.
I did one valve job on my ninja 250, was terrified as I was tearing it down, but I got it done and immediately traded it away incase I completely botched it
@@sed8181 03 ninja 250 green, I don't think I botched it because the valve tap completely stopped after adjustment and the bike sounded good, was just worried about long term reliability so I sold it and used that money to buy a 02 honda superhawk 996 with less miles
Hey jake big fan of your FZ07 build series and I have one myself and have been taking some of your ideas and applying it to my own bike. I have one request. I’m slightly paranoid about my area so I was hoping you can do an bsos video installing a gps tracker on your FZ07. I can’t decide what’s a good one but I know if Jakethegardensnake gives it the thumbs up then that’s the one I’ll go with. Please and thank you.
That’s really something I don’t know much about. I’ve put low jack on a few bikes when I worked at this Honda dealership over ten years ago. I don’t what they use now. I’ve had an R1 stolen. It sucks, get full coverage!
Jake TheGardenSnake wow not gonna lie didn’t thing you would’ve even seen my comment because of how popular your channel is. But thanks for the reply I will ask around my biker friends and see if they have any recommendations. Again I love your videos man you Motorisity and dan are who inspired me to buy my own bike and learn and join the ranks of bikers. It was actually your vids that convinced me to get the fz07 and I love it so thanks for that. I’m still learning (had the bike for six months) but I’m enjoying every moment of it.
Jake TheGardenSnake I haven’t done them. I just saw your video on how you did them I’m waiting for my new radiator hoses to come in and then I was gonna do that at the same time see how it goes
