Valve Chests - ep57 - 7.25" Gauge Steam Locomotive Build

In this episode of the 7 1/4" gauge steam locomotive build we take some flat bar to make the valve chests. The valve chests sit onto of the cylinders and contain the valve which controls the steam into and exhaust steam from the correct sides of the cylinder. Fabricating the cylinder cuts cost on a casting, but increases the machining time on Bridgeport milling machine. An interesting machining and welding project 👍.

It was a great idea, sometimes cheaper is not always quicker, I could have halved the time and been on to the next part much sooner. All good fun though. All the best, Matt 👍

Very impressed by Matt's welding quality and great to see different ways of doing things. I've just made a pair of valve chests out of solid cast iron. No welding, but endless machining, using the lathe for external surfaces and milling for the centre cavity. Castings definitely quicker.

Hi Richard, thank you for the kind words, it’s much appreciated. I do like machining cast iron, especially with carbide cutter, like a hot knife through cold butter! That was some task doing them from a solid chunk. This was an interesting project, but I wouldn’t do it like this again. 😂. All the best, Matt 👍

Looking good Matt. I must admit that I bushed my valve chests with a bronze bush to prevent the stainless steel valve rod acting on the mild steel directly. Probably me being a an old woman as usual!! Love the new style of video. Grum

Another excellent video Matt, maybe took a long time to fabricate but the result is a fine piece of work, wish I could produce such top quality tig welds,masterful. Thanks for the light hearted parts, gives me a smile every time.

The second part feeling like a chore, that's the one thing that puts me off of Locomotives compared to building scale Traction Engines. Locomotives look like a fair bit of repetition with multiples of similar parts. On a single cylinder Traction Engine there are very few identical parts, so you're always doing something different

Matt, Another great vid. 👍 I liked the fabrication idea…. showed off your TIG and MIG skills 👏👏 I also think that your ‘CNC-style’ surfacing tool path ( annular) was the best way to go. Is your packing gland going to be bronze/gunmetal? Pleased to see the ‘sealing’ of the inside corners too 👍 Regards Robert PS Did you put them on a surface plate to see if there was any warpage? 😎

I can’t speak highly enough about Amazon SpeedTiger 3/8 ~10mm 4 flute carbide end mills. Best balance of size vs cost and cut alloy (4140) and mild steel like butter all day long with no coolant. I run them on 2nd highest pulley on my Bridgeport.

Well done mate. Looking good and coming along nicely, if you factor in the hourly rate to fabricate, would that offset the cost of the casting?

Thank you. Yes if you were doing this as a paid job you’d probably get a casting. Although you’d make the pattern and get your own cast as that is way more cheaper than the over expensive model engineering castings. A topic I hope to cover at some point! All the best, Matt 👍

Hi Julia, the electricity isn’t that expensive! 😂. Neither of the welders are water cooled, but they are both modern inverter welders! All the best, Matt 👍

Instead of grinding the bevels for welding, did you consider using the mill for some easy hogging? I do appreciate the frugality though as I'm also quite frugal and sometimes fond of using "brute force and stupidity"!

For the weld preps, would it have not been quicker and cleaner to machine them off in the mill? I hate grinding dust everywhere in my workshop.
