It's Adam Koralik here and today we're discussing the Steam Deck by Valve. Specifically, I want to know what is everyone expecting the impact of it to be? How much of a success can it be, is it a threat to Nintendo? What happens to the industry either way?

I definitely don't see this overtaking the switch, but I think this could definitely overtake the market for gaming laptops. I've never been able to comfortably game on my Laptop "on the go" despite it being marketed as a portable gaming solution. That's why I like the switch so much, and why the Steam Deck is a better portable way to play PC games. Getting a kid a Steam Deck instead of an expensive gaming laptop will probably be the new norm

agree. The switch comparison is a marketing gimmick imo I see this as more of a entry level PC gaming device cleverly disguised as a handheld to lure people on the fence into PC gaming. It is a Trojan horse for steam os that's the big deal here the hardware is just a bonus.

What I like about the Steam Deck is that it runs Linux, so it 's basically a PC. That means you can download torrents, use vlc, firefox, stream Netflix, HBO etc. and run emulators, even a Switch one. This could be Deck's success point.

24:04 the steam deck will be able to be played online I'm sure, steam has an offline mode themselves and if games are downloaded at home people should be able to play games on the go just fine. I'd expect valve to have made the ui pretty user friendly especially if you hear about all the work they did to improve this over the original steam big picture interface like for example implementing a feature that allows you to close games and open them up at the same place at a later time like the consoles already have.
@kip258

There are still some games that require always online (sometimes for legitimate reasons and sometimes not) and I doubt most developers will want to make exceptions for the Deck. I think the 2021 Steam Deck will do better than the 2015 Steam Machine. Valve's disagreement with the then-console notion that "one size fits all" caused them to not create a specific configuration of Steam Machine. There were some minimum requirements that hardware partners had to follow, but it quickly became a PC purchasing experience for consumers. Aside from storage, all Steam Deck models have uniform hardware. Maybe Valve could encourage game developers to add a Steam Deck quality setting?
@EpicB
@EpicB 3 года назад
Steam Machines basically being "every manufacturer for themselves" beyond baseline specs probably didn't help if they wanted to bring console gamers into the PC space (in contrast to consoles which provide much more freedom from choice), and I doubt most PC folk cared at all. It also didn't help that without Proton, Linux gaming just wasn't at the level it is now. With the Steam Deck Valve definitely has the "console" idea much more nailed down.

That is a fantastic observation. You're absolutely right. The VR community was quite excited about the potential of the steam deck to facilitate portable VR, but that capability hasn't been really confirmed, as I understand it. I think this could be great entry point into pc gaming. There are plenty of games on steam that switch doesn't have and for reasonable prices so I could see many retro gamers interested in this. I could see this feeling intimidating especially if the steam os is clunky to use but I think what's so exciting to me about this is the Versatility. I think even if this fails it will still be a great step for Linux gaming in general and may have the path for Linux to become on par with windows support wise which i'd absolutely love to happen.

I totally agree with you. I always wanted to build a gaming PC but never had the proper introduction to do it. Gaming consoles was the simpler way to get into gaming. I think the Steam Deck is finally going to bridge that gap and get me into PC gaming. I’m exited for the Steam Deck, and really looking forward of stepping away from the console monopoly. I want to build my gaming library without rebuying the same games over and over again. I’m getting tired of buying remasters of the same game on every console generation. On Steam, if you want better graphics, just upgrade your hardware and continue paying where you left off. Moving forward, consoles are only for exclusives.

I imagine the Steam Deck will also be a gateway for more people to get into Linux.
@bowlingdoughnutsmd3703
@bowlingdoughnutsmd3703 3 года назад
I disagree. Linux isn’t even close to polished or on par with Windows and MacOS. Expectations are through the roof. This thing won’t perform like it’s being sold. It’s powerful relative to other handhelds but nowhere near a decent gaming pc. A gtx 1060 will give you better game performance. And bringing it back to Linux the games that won’t run on this because developer actively blocks them will burn so many people. Fortnite won’t run on this since epic doesn’t support Linux despite their open marketplace spiel. Maybe they will but that’s still a year or so away since that’s typically how long they take to support new consoles. To get the epic game store working you need a lot of work around too. You are thinking let’s install windows! I agree. Saying it’s a gateway implies people who have never touched a gaming pc and had to deal with the quirks that come with messing around pc’s. Can you imagine someone new having to create a recovery usb device, buy a usb c hub, plug in the USB key, go into the bootable boot drive, format the storage, and run windows. Find out the controls don’t work out of the box. So having to hook up a keyboard and mouse. Setting up windows. Running game pass. Games don’t work with the controls because you have to install steam. Then compatibility with games outside of steam is lacklausyer. You have to add games to steam as non steam games to get proper steam controller configurations, but oh wait you can’t add all game pass games to steam. Some just don’t show up. So you have to browse for them to add them. Some are locked behind windows files. Then later on you find out you can turn on Xbox controller emulation in the settings but only in big picture mode can you get to the option. And then once you turn that on some games refuse to work with it because their own hardware detection layer detects the joysticks and buttons as a separate input so you can’t get them to work right. You think a new person to pc gaming can handle all this? It’s for enthusiasts.

How I always saw the steam deck was simply a easy way to get into PC gaming. I as a Nintendo player and as a PC player, to me think that the Steam Deck will be more of a supplementary platform for existing PC users who don't want to buy games again on the Switch. While I do see console players gravitating towards the Steam Deck as a "Switch Pro", I do see storage and downloads as a major enough problem for someone to go back to consoles. Also interesting to see some perspective from friends on what they thought. From what I've seen from my friends who mostly game on PS/Xbox, half of them don't really care and another half are interested but think it costs too much. My friends who game on the Switch, they usually complain when it comes to the specs. I noticed that they are people who only play their Switch on the TV. Other friends who play handheld, they don't care at all. Oh I do want to bring up in the hypothetical scenario where Nintendo and Microsoft would need to team up. I don't think Microsoft would still care to help Nintendo ultimately just to take down Steam. Microsoft already does sell games including Halo, Gears, Ori, etc. on Steam itself and Game Pass library on PC from what I heard is different from Game Pass from on Xbox. I can see Microsoft helping Nintendo but maybe not to the same extent as thought of.

One thing to note is that, while Steam itself is a form of DRM, you can play DRM-free stuff on their devices. This is why a lot of people are attracted to the Steam Deck for Emulation; you just hit the "add non-Steam games" to your launcher, and it creates a shortcut to play your games with some compatibility for your non-Steam games through the client. This is pretty smart on Valve's part because many AAA developers often have you use a launcher within a launcher, so Valve made sure not to get in their way while letting other storefronts like GOG (a completely DRM-free paltform) be useful to their device.

Great video as always 😁 I do have a couple of notes though: 1) First of all given the current state of things in the pc scene as far as hardware pricing due to the pandemic and chip shortage due to that, Make no mistake the price of the Steam Deck is fantastic. I wouldn't be surprised if there taking a heavy loss on the Steam Deck and hoping to make it back from steam game sales as most big companies do. 2) As far as specs go you can think of the steam deck in terms of power as a slightly underclocked ps4 but with newer faster technology behind it so believe me when i say for a handheld of this size and given you have to take in account battery life when setting up the performance of something like this take it from me it's a beast. The closest you're gonna get to it in the current market is an AYANEO 2021 if you can even get your hands on one and the cheapest one costs $925.00 before shipping 😄 3) A lot of people think that Valve's first dive into hardware was steam machines but technically Valve just worked on SteamOS and got other manufacturers such as Alienware to make the pc's etc so they were really only involved in the software side of things, There first dive you could say into hardware was the Steam Link and Steam Controller which yeah wasn't very successful but you have to start somewhere i guess 🙂 there other venture into hardware was VR. 4) A quick note on what you mentioned at the end of the video as far as updates go, Yes pc games do get a lot of updates which is a good thing as far as the game goes but as far as your concerns go it's not something to worry about. Even if there is an update for a game you can still play the game without updating so if you're on the bus or in a car even if there is a massive update for the game you can still play it no problems and update it later. They have learned a lot from what they've done so far and from seeing the hardware in the Steam Deck and the work they're putting into SteamOS v3.0 i am confident that this will be a very good handheld especially at that price point, If you were ever going to get into pc gaming but are only used to handhelds then this is definitely a good place to start and as far as whether you're worried if it's going to be easy to use or comfortable etc then just watch the multiple videos that are now on youtube of people getting a hands on look at it such as Linus Tech Tips, In fact he did a very good video on it so i do recommend checking it out.

Another potential attraction point: I have a unit pre-ordered. One of the things I look forward to (as weird as it sounds) is being able to play at least some of my games (especially titles like JRPG's with turn-based combat) while riding on an exercise bike. Sure, it's not the hardest of hardcore options, but it is something that appeals to me. Grinding in those games is rarely much fun, but being able to combine that with working out? 2 birds with one stone. And since the progress is supposed to seamlessly update between the PC and mobile device, it means not having to be tethered and being able to do more mundane tasks like that from wherever. Just another facet to think about.

Good video. Think another point that you kind of missed is that the steam deck is an iteration of the handheld PC models already produced, such as the GDP WIN and the Aya Neo. They've already showed that this kind of thing is possible, albeit expensive. Steam is giving us the most powerful handheld PC ever made for hundreds of dollars less than the most comparable model from another company. Well I think your point about the online connection necessity is true, I think there's a lot of games that won't need it. I'm super interested in one of these to play games that I bought and never got around to, Mike Shadow of Mordor, mad Max, and sleeping dogs. All of those will run fine with that internet connection and shouldn't need too many updates since they're so old. I'm really looking forward to this as a portable device I can play at work on my breaks. Right now I've been using the switch and Vita, but there's plenty of games I want to squeeze in to the little free time I have, but aren't available on those two systems. All in all, the steam deck is going to be a niche product. For the people that fit that niche it's going to be huge. I think it's going to take two or three more iterations before it actually is ready to compete with Nintendo though. Steam is going to have to develop the software to make it as user-friendly as a console is, and I don't think they're there yet

I could maybe see people creating variants like the steam machines but the difference between valve and other companies is that they have justification to sell this at a loss or any profit since they get money from steam and this expands the steam ecosystem potentially adding more users or making users buy more from steam. If a company wants to compete with the base models they have to create something different with compelling hardware that can in some way compete against the steam deck at a reasonable price

A few extra wee details about the Steam Deck, while it's running SteamOS Valve have made it clear that not only can you install competitor's storefronts onto it but if you wanted you could just install windows and use it like a PC especially since it's dockable like the switch. Obviously there's no disc or cartridge slot but I am big into PC recently selling all but a few consoles, and I've a decently sized physical game collection for PC, it's entirely possible (and I intend to do so) to rip your games to your PC and copy them to the Deck's internal memory and play them. I do feel like the Deck will do well, I know of quite a few people that have also sold their Switches to get one, it won't beat the Switch but I don't think Valve are really too caring about that, their CEO Gabe Newell has stated that Nintendo are great and have garnered a huge audience with thier content, but we're going for a different audience mostly. Only time will tell but Valve have been very bold with their hardware in the past, creating not just for profit but because they see a problem to solve or a chance to innovate, the Steam controller really changed the game (pun intended) for control inputs on PC, the Steam Link offered great flexibility to PC players and both sold very well, they were partially mocked for looking werid but anyone who has them knows how incredible they were, and to be fair the Steam machine disaster wasn't their vault, they actually never made them, they pulled out close to release but companies like Dell decided to release over priced boxes to profit off the hype. Sorry this was really long 😂

I think the Steam Deck is to the PC, what the Sega Nomad is to the Genesis. A different way to experience PC Gaming and maybe get new people to try PC Gaming. "Maybe" because the Steam Deck is not really a "mass-market" product. It only gets sold through Steam store (atm) so I think it really is just for existing PC players, that want to have a Switch-like experience .

So glad you made this video. First I wanna start off with that Valve doesn't give a shit if this thing flops. Between their online games and Steam, they're basically a money factory. They've already said they're making little, if any money off these things (which may just be marketing hype) but also the "Steam Machine/Box" thing was purely them licensing the right for PC manufacturers to ship SteamOS with their builds. This really didn't do much, as you said no one bought them, but around that time people would not shut up about them. They've been trying to "redefine" PC gaming, which while many are resistant to, has gone a long way in expanding PC as a platform in the last decade or so. I feel like with each generation of consoles I see more people just saying fuck it and buying a PC instead. While most people are still gonna buy a switch for their mario and zelda, this will be a device they can run their 20+ year backlog of Steam games on. If nothing else, it will light a fire under Nintendo's ass for 3rd party support, which, while better than the Wii U era, is still lacking. Back in the 360 days, Microsoft made Valve charge for their updates to Left 4 Dead as DLC, while they were free on Steam. Needless to say, Microsoft doesn't do this anymore. Valve and Microsoft have already been in talks, and the response to "gamepass on Steam?" has been "only if Steam can be on Xbox." What we're gonna see is Nintendo and Sony fighting to maintain the status quo of games as a $60 license that can only be run on their hardware, versus Microsoft and Valve fighting for games as a service.

I think that you explained the realities of the way that big game companies look at things here, very well. Nintendo definitely has the mentality of “don’t rock the boat.” Still, I hope the steam deck does well enough to stick around for a while. I really worry that it will have a similar life cycle to the Dreamcast: big release and then a slow death.

As a PC gamer who bought a Switch to play games like The Outer Worlds, The Witcher 3, and many many other games portably, the Steam Deck offers me a straight up replacement and a ton more value. Not only will I get all my games on it, but I also don't have to pay a fee for online and can load any game that supports either Linux or Windows on it. I can only guess that the people who have a Switch for the same reasons as me will feel the same way. It won't be the Switch killer, but I think it establishes some competition with Nintendo if this device does well enough. We won't know until the dust settles and these things start coming to the market officially, but I think a lot of people with just Steam accounts will see the value of this and buy it. I don't think it needs to sell millions of units to casuals to be a success either. I don't think Valve themselves really see this as "the Switch killer", so it's kind of odd that people would think that just because it's a portable.

@@Edmundostudios Yes definitely! I actually own a Switch but don't pay for online which stinks because there are a lot of great games I'd love to play. The PSP sold over 80 million units, at the same time as the DS! That's one of the most underrated achievements in the gaming industry. Such a shame they dropped the ball so hard on the Vita. I think if the Steam Deck can nail the marketing, they will defeat Nintendo. But its little to do with the quality of the product, and everything to do with marketing. The Integra X1 is outpaced by mid-range phones from 2019, and yet the Switch has sold over 80 million units. If normies can emulate Switch games at 60fps on the Deck, its game, set and match. But only if Steam market it right

Really enjoyed this hypothetical analysis of the Steam Deck. It’s a very interesting but confusing product to me. I don’t know why it needs to exist. I feel like Valve might see a lot of competition coming from GamePass on PC in the future and how that might pull customers from Steam but supplying a product that keeps interest in Steam high could help with that. I don’t think they are looking to compete with consoles but rather to secure their position on the PC going forward. So either way, we could possibly see gamepass on a future Nintendo handheld. Though it would benefit Microsoft more than Nintendo

I'm glad there's gonna be another major hand held. The problem you have with handhelds is that if you're not Nintendo, developers don't wanna create games for a platform that doesn't have a huge install base. With the way the PS5/PS4 and XboxS/1 are, they're basically PCs, developers don't have to go out of their way to release a game now on Playstation/Xbox/PC and Steam Deck (Which is a PC in your hand) Me personally, I'd get one but not right away, and I believe this will be successful, probably not become mainstream yet but Valve will make a profit on Steam Deck, and maybe this will push Nintendo to develop the Switch 2 faster, because god knows if it was up to them, they would keep the current Switch going for another 5 years

Oh and about the Steam Deck itself. I've been wanting a capable handheld PC for surely a decade already. The problem so far has been either a lack in performance or a very, _very_ high price. The Steam Deck appears to be really good price/performance-wise and Valve will definitely sell tens of thousands of units, hopefully even millions, but we'll see how [not] nieche it'll turn out to be. Steam software wise geniuses, can maintain Zombies looking good for a good while if they need to. Hardware in the other hand... If they want to compete they'll have to go long run. One thing is the initial hype of the thing but we'll need to see if they can keep the platform alive with their own efforts and not depending only on what others do for them. Valve tends to be lazier than the regular platforms in that sense trusting that everything is going o work on their own without they putting too much effort.

1) The Steam Deck is not meant to compete against Nintendo. It's just trying to help expand the new market of handheld gaming PCs started by the GPD Win, Aya Neo, One Xplayer, etc. This is a fast growing market, especially in Asia, that has lots of potential room to grow even more. It's especially exciting for people like myself that have literally hundreds if not thousands of games in our Steam libraries. 2) Microsoft has already partnered with Steam to release all their new exclusives day one on Steam. 3) Steam has an offline mode where most gams work just fine. I'm sure Valve thought about this when making a handheld. 4) With emulators, the Steam Deck can play WAY MORE Nintendo games than the Switch ever will (along with almost any other platform in history).

Worth bearing in mind that the Steamdeck is perhaps the most open console that’s been released to date. It’s essentially a handheld PC so it’s even possible to install Windows on it. This is important as Steam OS is actually a variant of Linux so not all games that work on Windows Steam are guaranteed to work from day one. However this can be solved by installing Windows on it. Hell open up a browser and you could probably run PS Now games on it. One topic I’d be interested to hear Adam’s thoughts on is what the entrant of PC hardware manufacturers into the console market means. In addition to the Steamdeck both the PS5 and current Xboxes use AMD APUs (which is their term for a CPU that has onboard graphics processing). Meanwhile the Switch uses Nvidia chips. This is worth noting as, if Nintendo wanted to, I’m certain they could get Nvidia to develop a successor to the Switch that would easily blow the Steamdeck out of the water from a hardware standpoint and probably give the PS5 and Xbox Series X a run for their money.

I wonder if the 3rd generation rule applies in the case of the Wii U, given it is the 6th new home console (NES, SNES, N64 .. GC, Wii, Wii u) of Nintendo. My fondest memories of the Wii involve trying to track one down with at the time my girlfriend (or possibly ex but still friends at the time) who is now my wife. We traveled all across the state of Indiana and finally got the last one at a Walmart in a no name town (Wabash or Huntington, I believe). Oddly enough, I sold it about a year later for the same price I paid for it for spending money so we could take a weekend trip to Pittsburgh and have extra spending money.

So here is my take. I'm a Nintendo/PC gamer. I get Nintendo for the first party stuff and occasional cool third party exclusive and PC for everything else. I've found that to be the best combo both economically and for the best overall gaming experience. The switch is appealing in a way that it is so damn simple. Snappy no frills quick OS boot. In fact I would say off all the consoles today it is the best plug and play experience hands down. There is a real value to that. I will say as a PC gamer who likes playing Doom 2016, Witcher, Red Dead etc on PC the Steam Deck is very appealing for that stuff. That being said. I'm not the major demographic of the switch. Most folks buying the switch are folks that might like a first party title or two but just want a great and AFFORDABLE plug and play gaming solution. Bottom line where I as an enthusiast might be willing to drop 700 dollars on a steam deck I highly doubt my 7 year old cousin who plays fortnite and smash (or his parents for that matter) gives a crap.

I think comparing the Steam Deck to the switch is a bad comparions in general. Steam Deck essentially aims to be an extension of having a gaming pc. Oh? I already have this large game library on pc, now I can play it on the go as well. Even better I can sync it up and just continue on my much more powerful gaming system. Maybe pc gamers will be less likely to buy a Nintendo handheld as well, but I think overall this may mostly draw upon a market that does not exist right now, or is poorly served by gaming laptops, rather than on the market of the switch. Maybe this will hurt gaming laptops instead. Don't expect parents to an-mase buy these for their kids, expect millennials with enough disposable income to buy them next to their existing gaming rig. Personally I am part of the much, much smaller niche of linux gamers who just want linux to gain more market share.

You're missing a major point, Gamepass will be able to run on the Steam Deck so why would I (as a current owner of a Switch and have a pre-order of a Steam Deck) choose to use the Gamepass on Nintendo's underpowered console when it'll likely run a lot better on the Steam Deck? At this point I'm pretty close to just selling my Switch altogether as I don't see the need for it now.

As a parent with children who game and all of which have their own switch, I don't see the Deck as a handheld for them. This to me is a handheld for someone like me. A parent who also games and already has a Steam library who wants to be able to take my gaming with me wherever I go. I can definitely see myself dropping in my kids game of Minecraft or something similar to play with them when on a vacation or just sitting around in the living room and then still be able to switch over to a game of Hunt Showdown or Assassin's Creed or whatever I'm in the mood for.

Switch emulation runs quite well on PC at this point, even on lower end hardware so it would be interesting to see how well emulation runs on the Steam Deck's APU with its very fast shared RAM. I assume that it won't be an issue to install Windows on the Steam Deck considering its more or less regular PC hardware. That way I could play all of my 1500+ digital games on the go. And utilizing something like Parsec would also let me stream any game to the device from my gaming PC. I will likely get one for my wife once the first reviews are out.

PC Gamer here: What the Steam Deck is going to be competing with is gaming laptops, rather than the Switch. The idea that you can get something which is effectively a $1000 gaming laptop for roughly half the price in an ultra portable form factor is what makes this device such a crazy value proposition. Also, this is something that's clearly marketed to adults, rather than as a family friendly device that parents are going to be buying for their kids.
