The name "vampire deer" could be in reference to a number of different deer (and deer-like) species. Fangs in deer were actually normal millions of years ago and it's the antlers that have shown up over time. These fanged deer use their fangs the same way other deer use their antlers - to show off to lady deer (though they don't lose their teeth the way deer antlers are lost each year)! These fangs are also called tusks and are much more prominent in males than females.
Scientific Name:
- mouse deer (family: Tragulidae)
- musk deer (genus: Moschus)
- tufted deer (Elaphodus cephalophus)
- barking deer/muntjac deer (genus: Muntiacus)
- water deer (Hydropotes inermis)
Range: Mostly Asia with species in Europe and Africa
Size: average about 2 feet (61cm) in height at the shoulders
Diet: mostly herbivorous; may also take bird eggs and carrion
Lifespan: at least 10 years

I had no idea there were so many different kinds of fanged deer/non-deer. I agree with Mr. Animalover, it's pretty confusing sometimes. Huge kudos to you guys for getting it all untangled for us! Thanks!

Additionally, there is no such thing as a vampire deer, their long teeth are actually tusks not fangs, while muntjacs and tufted deer are considered deer because they have antlers, whilst musk deer, water deer, and chevrotains (also called mouse deer) are not deer at all, they instead belong to the families Moschidae, Hydropotidae, and Tragulidae respectively.
@indyreno2933
@indyreno2933 2 года назад
The term "deer" refers exclusively to all members of the family Cervidae, whilst species superficially resembling deer have the word "deer" in their name, but are not actually deer at all, chevrotains (aka mouse deer), musk deer, and the water deer aren't actually deer but instead belong to the families Tragulidae, Moschidae, and Hydropotidae respectively, deer are all characterized by antlers.
@MoskusMoskiferus1611
@MoskusMoskiferus1611 2 года назад
You got it wrong for Water Deer
@indyreno2933
@indyreno2933 2 года назад
@Siberian Moschid, actually I didn't, the biggest required trait of a deer is antlers, the Water Deer (Hydropotes Inermis) is the only extant representative of the family Hydropotidae, surprisingly, the water deer is actually more closely related to musk deer than it is to deer.
@MoskusMoskiferus1611
@MoskusMoskiferus1611 2 года назад
@@indyreno2933. Hydropotidae ?, they were under Cervidae Family and Hydropotinae Subfamily
@MoskusMoskiferus1611

@@indyreno2933. Water Deer is only Superficially similiar to Musk Deer but they are more related to True Deer by DNA
@indyreno2933
@indyreno2933 2 года назад
Actually, the monogeneric families Hydropotidae (Water Deer and Fossil Relatives (contains 1 genus: Hydropotes (includes 2 species: Hydropotes inermis and Hydropotes argyropus))) and Moschidae (Musk Deer and Fossil Relatives (contains 1 genus: Moschus (includes 8 species: Moschus moschiferus, Moschus sachalinensis, Moschus anhuiensis, Moschus berezovskii, Moschus fuscus, Moschus chrysogaster, Moschus leucogaster, and Moschus cupreus))) are most closely related to each other and form a monophyletic group, which is the superfamily Moschoidea, which is actually not part of the infraorder Pecora, but instead a more ancient group known as the infraorder Ceratodonta, which is only more derived than Tragulina (Chevrotains and Fossil Relatives) but is basal to all other extant representatives of the suborder Neoselenodontia (Herbivorous Even-Toed Ungulates), thus meaning that the giraffoids, deer, and bovids (collectively known as pecorans) are actually more closely related to camels and their extinct relatives (collectively known as tylopods) than they are to non-pecoran ruminants such as chevrotains, water deer, and musk deer, thus dividing the suborder Neoselenodontia into four extant infraorders, Tragulina (Chevrotains and Fossil Relatives (contains 1 family: Tragulidae)), Ceratodonta (Musk Deer, Water Deer, and Fossil Relatives (contains 2 families: Hydropotidae and Moschidae)), Tylopoda (Tylopods (contains 1 family: Camelidae)), and Pecora ((Protuberanced Ruminants (contains 4 families: Antilocapridae, Giraffidae, Cervidae, and Bovidae)).

Science is so f*cking confusing. I mean there are false Foxes/true Foxes, false Hyenas/true Hyenas, false Owls/true Owls, etc. and now this. We always knew in our country that the Mouse-Deer is the smallest Deer.
@AnimalFactFiles
@AnimalFactFiles 3 года назад
It can be tough to find a balance between being so scientific that it creates a really high bar for entry (for example only ever using scientific names to talk about animals) or so blasé that common names are applied to all kinds of unrelated animals. It can get pretty confusing!

I've learned somewhere that the Vampire Deer's fangs can flare and retract. Is this true?
@AnimalFactFiles
@AnimalFactFiles 3 года назад
Hmm... I didn't come across that at all. I'm assuming you mean like a domestic cat's claws? My only guess would be some kind of snarling behavior that lifts the lips, but not the actual teeth moving themselves. That would be cool, though!
