Fun Fact: Vampires we’re originally conceived in Eastern Europe as a scapegoat for disease. They would say that if a person got sick, it was from a recently deceased family member crawling out of the grave and consuming someone’s energy. So villagers, in an attempt to try and cure a disease, would exhume the suspected vampire and would decide if they were a vampire or not if their hair and finger nails grew (which is something that happens to all corpses). actually, "Dracula", is the other name of one of the kings of Walachia/Romania- Vlad Tepes. this is his other name beacouse he is known as one of the cruelest kings of Transilvania, Romania, and Moldova. They named him like this bc he used to impale his enemies, but he didn't kill them all at once, he left them like that, to be tortured, until they died. it is also said that he drank their blood afterwards.
actually bram stoker wrote dracula which was based on a female countesses named Elizabeth bathory who would consume and bathe in virgins blood to stay young forever, and also valdimer the impaler was the inspiration

They were originally basically just dead humans that demons climbed inside of to turn into its meat puppet. It’s why they would say to stake the heart because the demon lived inside of it or something 🤔 But there are many origin stories so why knows what’s the real one. Another is that they were actually just humans that had been declared dead but were not actually dead (ie just had a really slow heart rate etc) and then they “woke up” and were declared as vampires

there's a cool theory that the condition that I have called EDS might have contributed to the origin of vampires. we have translucent, stretchy, velvety, delicate skin, we have specific unusual blood flow issues, often leading to intense red meat and salt cravings, we have unusual allergies to things usually not considered harmful (garlic is a FODMAP food), we often sit rest and sleep in contorted unusual positions and we often stay very still when sleeping, and there's more! edit: I know there's an actual condition nicknamed 'the vampire disease' but EDS has many symptoms in common with it, and while that disease is rare, EDS is much more common and therefore could possibly spread a myth further? anyway I also love ChadChad's sketch and it's just fun to theorise.
i remember when twilight came out and me and my friends used to have HEATED debates about team jacob or team edward (i was team werewolf btw) and i was in love with seth clearwater and in the books it said that werewolves smelled like pines or something and i found a perfume that smelled like pines and i would wear it religiously. my friend was team vampires and used to wear lip tints so her lips would look "blood red" like they described in the books, she'd also wear fangs to school... anyways, let's just say we weren't part of the popular kids

My grandmother had PCT (vampire disease) when she was alive. The thing about the 'desire to drink blood' is false, or at least she and her support group never experienced that.
Also (I used to have a book about the history of vampires. Sadly gave it away to a teacher), interestingly enough, during the height of “vampire hunts”, where people would dig up graves of those who have recently died, people noticed how some corpses had bloated stomachs and blood leaking from their mouths. They assumed that these corpses were vampires that have recently fed. On the contrary, they’re regular corpses going through a stage of decaying. Gases tend to build up in corpses, hence the bloated bellies. And it’s normal to see all types of fluids leaking from corpses.
Before Dracula, the novel, vampires were actually closer to demons than anything else. They weren’t supposed to be sexy edgy boys that you should seek after, they were creatures from hell that you should run away from. Bram Stoker changed that in 1897 and it’s been downhill ever since with vampires getting sexier and sexier as the decades went on. It’s exactly what happened to Satan. Long ago he was the monster to all monsters and now he’s a sexy bad boy with daddy issues all thanks to Paradise Lost. I think progressions like this in literature is very funny, there’s always a turning point lol.
as much as i love dracula, i will say that it wasnt the first vampire novel. before it, there was Carmilla and she was definitely romanticized to some extent. she was portrayed as alluring and possessive, and formed a very close friendship with our main character, laura. of course all of this was a front for her demonic nature, and also a metaphor for how lesbians are predatory and scary, hoorayyy….. /s anyway, this book actually predated dracula by around 20 years and was likely what inspired it

I haven’t heard of Carmilla, but from what you’ve told me, it sounds like it kinda falls into the demonic creature from hell category (which, to be fair, Dracula falls into too but that’s more on a predator v.s. prey type level, not appearance) more than the sexy vampire category.

Wasnt the folklore about vampires that it was a corpse that had been inhabited by an evil spirit that was essentially using it as a meat puppet? Also, Satan was most likely a cherub, which going by the biblical description where horrifying monsters. One thing thats always bothered me about sexy vampires tho, how tf do they make themselves look so perfect if they cant see their reflection? Id assume theyd look quite scruffy.

That sounds like my fantasy from when I was younger, except I was a guy living my dream through a fantasy world with that exact story. It was also vampire themed because twilight. So yeah, not only was I oblivious to my Gayness, I was also fan of twilight mainly for the biting aspect. That was like sex to me.
Anne Rice was actually a big part of the romanticized vampire, she wrote the Vampire Chronicles which very much contributed to the trend now, not solely Twilight and VD. Rice's vampires (think about LeStat de Lioncourt) were glamorized to h3ll.
I think I might have been the only one in my high school that was team Rice 😂. Except for my best friend who ended up keeping my vampire Chronicles compilation book 😩
I was afraid interview with the vampire would be too scary to me as a preteen so i picked up her spin on sleeping beauty as, like, a gentle intro. And was scarred for life and never read any Anne Rice stuff ever again. I don't know what happens in Interview with the Vampire but if there's a cat, I dont want to know.
I think the romanticism of vampires started with the book Carmilla which predated Dracula. But Anne Rice is definitely the mother of vampires. The only vampire in her books that resemble modern vampires is Louis. Who is an absolute wet blanket imo and I hated him.

@@_____________a_a I am not sure if that's what the orginal comment was talking about but I am pretty sure Vlad Dracula was the OG "vampire" and he was called Vlad the impaler cuz he would throw his enimies on stakes implanted in the ground and leave them there untill they bled to death (thats why he was called a vampire too, he didn't actually drink blood). He was taken from Romania by the ottman empire and when he came back he learned that some nobels had betrayed his father (king of Romania) and killed him and his brother so he killed the nobels by impaling them in that way. As someone who read Dracula fan fic I was shocked when I found out, who tf read his actual life story and thought "that's hot"
@@tunafish5462 Nope no, all wrong. Vlad the Impaler and Dracula have nothing to do with the origins of vampires. In reality people just used vampires as an explanation for sickness, death, and decomposition, processes that they didn't understand.
To be fair, Dracula was considered sensual and romantic at the time. He was based on Vlad the Impaler who was a military leader who used incredibly brutal methods of psychological warfare. For example, he had a meal on a battlefield with countless enemy soldiers on spikes surrounding him. The smell of blood was strong enough to make someone vomit.
I’ll take this over the people romanizing real serial killers just because, “but they cute, tho,” and sometimes trying to get them out of jail. If you’re a cute looking person, it apparently doesn’t matter if they killed 1-30 people. People just think they wouldn’t kill THEM and the killer was totally going to fall in love with them because they’re ~special~

This is why Interview With the Vampire was so good. Anne Rice wrote Vampires who are attractive so they could lure their prey, but were also horrendous monsters who toyed with and psychologically tortured their prey. And Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt and Kirsten Dunst did amazing jobs in portraying that ACTUAL terrifying side.
I found my old grade 4 English class notebook from way back in 2009/2010, and I literally wrote an assignment based on the Twilight series. I mentioned Bella getting pregnant, and amidst the checkmarks, that singular sentence got underlined. It's been over a decade but I just really want to know what my 4th grade teacher was thinking as she witnessed a 9 year old casually mention vampire impregnation. It's going to haunt me.

My vampire obsession surprisingly didn't start because of Twilight... It started because of a vampire-cheetah shapeshifter smut graphic novel I read when I was in grade 1. I didn't read twilight until grade 5 💀- Also it didn't help the fact that I was told I was vampire because I was paler than Edward Cullen on a rainy day, and didn't like going outside because I didn't know how to tell my mom about my crippling fear of people. Honestly the graphic novel is probably what lead me to clicking on this video, so idek how I feel about that-
