I think Fantano doesn’t like it because it’s on a way higher intellectual level than the shite he calls gems. i completely agree, i think the duets were definitely lacking a lot of vampire weekends general originality, while the other songs definitely were different than past albums, they held a bit of rostam and old VW

Exactly! I think it's a great album although some songs are obviously weaker than others and some I don't care for, but man, Rich Man is one of my favorites! I can't believe he didn't like that one, lol.

I've listened to the album like 6 times already and when I hear the first seconds of rich man i can't bear the screech like guitar but then it gets enjoyable idk why.

Agreed. I guess I'll give him a pass because I wasnt as enamored at first but its grown on me so much as a classic. It's just so musically varied which doesnt bear as good of a review on a first listen.

YES, some songs may seem rough but damn, their ideas have never been better. It flows together incredbily well and each song has a passage, a chorus, a lyric that makes you want to come back to listen to it again. I love FOTB just as much as any other VW record!

I agree. Vampire weekend is the closest thing to modern day Paul Simon, Peter Gabriel or the grateful dead. See them in concert. They clearly spend a ton of time with these songs and it's a great time

Always wanted to see them at a concert, they just never play at the right time (I'm still a sophomore in high school!) As much as I love bands like The New Pornographers or The National, Vampire Weekend manages to make each album a complete work of art with almost every single song. Their consistency even within individual albums is insane.

@@WiloPolis03 I saw them last August and am seeing them again this August. I also saw them back in 2013 and their live shows are superior now. They flesh out songs I never liked much (Worship You) into live highlights and play most of their songs in very different ways. Its clear they have spent a lot of time over the years rehearsing every song in many arrangements

I think this is one of those cases where the band’s pedigree and the quality of their prior output works against them. Like it’s a good album but compared with the cohesiveness and conceptual clarity of their previous work its inconsistency juts out more.

Noah S I see it as more taking things in context than bias. Like if a rookie comes into the nba and averages 20 a game, that’s an amazing season. If LeBron James does it, it’s a horrible season because of the precedent he’s set and the full context of his career. Obviously music is more subjective than basketball lol but my point is that it’s valid not to just view things in a vacuum. Ignoring context does not equal ignoring bias imo.

Shane McNealy the album was fucking great live. He did some solos on choo choo that should’ve made the album. All of our yesterdays live sounded like a late 70’s pop song, and again, was way better then the album version. Lots of opportunity on the album, but none taken.

Legit so glad it got submitted for best album of the year, VW has gotten a lot of Grammy recognition this decade, they 100% deserve it

William Magee It’s a bit of a toss up for me at this point between this and Ghosteen by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. That sort of debate between the complete work of artistic genius that makes me think deeply on all its intricacies even if I only experience it a couple of times (Ghosteen, for me), and that perfect collection of songs I can go back to again and again and again and scarcely get tired of how well all of it works (Father of the Bride, for me). I’m feeling that again this year with Fetch the Bolt Cutters and folklore, and Cha Cha Palace by Angelica Garcia is a great one too (really wish Melon had looked into that one). This year has been stacked with great albums, imo.

@William Magee Girl With a Basket of Fruit was amazing; it alternated between disturbing, hilarious, and hilariously disturbing for me, but I can't say I've heard anything like it, even from Xiu Xiu. Definitely in my top 10. I haven't listened to Caligula yet (didn't last year, and been too busy with this year's music since). Charli was good, in my opinion (a 7 for me), but I liked her album from this year more overall (I actually agreed with Fantano that it was an 8, even though "I Finally Understand" is my favorite track and was his least favorite 😂). If I had to pick a third place, I would probably give it to Assume Form by James Blake; loved nearly everything about that album and it only grew on me as the year went on.

Jack Brown I enjoyed the singles but I just found the album sorta stale. Yes, it was instrumentally unique but I maybe the production was shorty and Ezra’s (that’s his name right?) voice became annoying to me as I listened to the album progressed.

Jack - Great minds think alike. Maybe that's why it's been nominated for the Best Album of the Year at the Grammy's coming up. It feels great to right all the time, heh?

Imo, they could have cut "We Belong Together", "Jerusalem, New York, Berlin", "2021" and possibly "Stranger" and I'd like the album significantly more.
