Lol, had my guitar lesson and my teacher said that the lead singer took guitar lessons at our place and then jumped ship after he learned all his major and minor chords and then just started to write songs and started vampire weekend, these guys are great
I mean, let’s be honest, once you learn the chord shapes everything else just comes naturally. Well, I guess that depends on how much music you listen to and if you have any sort of inherent musical talent. You have to listen to lots of music to be a good musician, imo. A friend of mine has been playing guitar for well over a decade but still cannot jam with others, or improvise a solo. Still cannot play in the proper key. Some people just don’t have it.
0:57 “Through the pain, I always tell the truth.” I’ve loved this album since 2008, and this has always been my favorite part of the entire record. The way that he sings it is beautiful idk what it is.
I can't figure out why I like this band so much. Their songs are simple in one way, yet seldom make sense in a conventional way. and Ezra, handsome and charming, seems to be in another universe somehow. They are quirky and sweet and pleasant. But not boring. Like eating unfamiliar fruit.
Totally agree. I feel so stupid for letting people tell me that this wasn't a good band. So many years missed that I could've been enjoying their music 😪
Simplicity. This song is just based off of simple harmony. 3rd intervals. They hang on one chord from the ending of the first verse and it takes you to the next section very naturally. They have great lyrics. I'm guessing at least 1 or 2 of them know a bit of music theory. Sometimes people are really good at taking simple things, like basic harmony for instance, and using it in really original, yet classical ways. They're just smart, basically. But they don't do too much. The best things are simple. Even a lot of things that seem complicated are very simple when you break them down to their parts.
"Kids, on my first day as a college professor, there were two things I didn't know that I wish I did. The first thing was that your mother was in that classroom." HIMYM
Vampire Weekend does great music, but it's even better when you pair it with one of their music videos. Just pure fun. They always come up with these cool video concepts that just get better as they go on, which makes the song even better, like this one.
You know what, Vampire Weekend. I give a fuck, about an Oxford Comma. How else will I know a book is referring to the chapter number, and not saying chapter one for some other reason?
***** My point is, I can tell when a chapter is changing without an oxford comma. It was a joke. Everybody else took it as a joke. But, you apparently get off on perfect grammar and corrected me anyway. Also, parties are a great place to find dicks.
This is giving me so much nostalgia. When I was about 5 I would listen to this CD to help me go to sleep and I’m 15 now and I just bought the vinyl of it. Brings me back to better times :)
I remember hearing this song on like a Tesco advert promoting this album really early in their career and getting chills down my spines. I recognized their name from my friend telling me to search them up - so I did, and they are still one of my favourite bands no matter what mood I'm in!!
This is so brilliant. It brings up the excellent point that small errors, such as grammatical errors, in properly conveying an idea are quite insignificant, and begs the question as to (if this is idea is understood) why the one critiquing cares about the error anyways? The song is most likely implying that critiquing is used to feel above or better than the person who made the error, even though they made an excellent point. Amazing real-world application in these lyrics, and a very musically sound structure! I cannot get enough!
I cried listening to this because of the amount of nostalgia I felt. Felt like the introverted 8 year old playing this on repeat, playing wii with my brother. Never felt lonely or depressed back then. 10/22/20 Future Saul I’m glad you stayed on your grind, look how successful you are.
I'm getting excited for their new tour and watching old music videos. I just got the best flashback from watching this in middle school and it not making any sense, but still being overwhelmed with love for the song. Here I am years after graduating high school still trying to make sense of the video and falling for their unique sound all over again.
I've recently become obsessed with this song and it's the first time I've seen the video so I never knew it was directly by Richard Ayoade, that's awesome now it's a combination of two things I love!
these lyrics are genius! they sound weird at first and then when u think about it they totally make sense and are actually making a point unlike some artists of these days.....
I was 14 yo when this song came out and it has been one of my fav songs ever since ❤last summer I’ve been lucky enough to visit Oxford university by myself (it was my first solo trip ever) and I felt so emotional while listening to it .. being in Oxford listening to Oxford comma .. it was a bucket list moment
Yes, specifically the term used in cinema for a scene like this would be "long take", but this not being a singular scene in an otherwise edited feature, the term would be a "One shot". Very, very impressive indeed. A joy to watch.
I'm no expert, but it sure looks like there's a break if you look really closely at 2:23. The brightness level changes abruptly. There may be others. But yes, they did a very good job of at least making it look like one long take.
i’m so lucky to have had cool parents growing up in the early 2010s. now this song and this whole album reminds me of fifth grade. enjoyed it at age ten and ten years later it’s just as good!!
Man, I remember I’d heard the name Vampire Weekend in early 2008. Thought it was a stupid band name, probably trying to latch onto that Twilight hype. We had Saturday Night Live on in March, lightly paying attention to the sketches as we’d head out onto the deck to smoke and chat. But as I came back from the bathroom I heard M79 coming from the TV and was stopped in my tracks because whatever I expected from this band... it sure as hell wasn’t supposed to sound as fresh as this. Been an ardent fan since that very moment.
I remember driving around with my dad and he would play this on his ipod or itd be on Triple J I rediscovered this band and omg nostalgia hit ne like a truck
You have seen HIMYM and it’s your favorite series. You hear that song in the first episode of Suits and you know for fact that this series is going to be awesome! Period
I just listen because it sounds fantastic...one day a no bullshit life style will make sense ....luv the melody Hum humm...hmmmm o.k...appreciate the upload.
well i mean, that is exactly what they were going for. not sure if they're still big fans but i know they were back then, which is also why they loved the font Futura, which is was Wes Anderson uses. Not only is that the font on the first two albums and this video is obviously supposed to be a rip off, or a nod to Wes Anderson, they also mention the font in the song Holiday
