VAN BUILD FAIL - Water, Solar Lift, and Possible DELAY? Campervan Conversion #11

Some mistakes can take months to fix…like this water tank FAIL. This week we grappled with the fact that the custom water tanks were not what we ordered. We would’ve lost over 20L of water storage, a good amount of clearance, and a lot of other details that aren’t worth mentioning. Ladi has decided he’s going to make our tanks HIMSELF (yes, he's an actual super-human) and in the meantime take the week to tackle some details regarding the solar lift.
**TEASER**: In order to make sure our build videos are high quality, single-project videos, I came up with a pretty epic idea. Make sure to get excited for next Wednesday (DECEMBER 23). I can hardly wait!

Welp, I guess not every week can be a winner. What a bummer.... We were so ready to move onto the next phase, but it seems it will take an extra few weeks. IN THE MEANTIME... Hi guys...I'm sure Ladi has got the skills to make your water tanks. Bit of advice, as I used to similar work, when purchasing your sheet material and the corner beading ..make sure they have the same melting temperature or as near as possible...that way when using the hot air gun you are effectively melting the two sheet parts and beading together as one piece...also when starting the corner beading...slice off the back at a 45 degree angle...it will fit into the corners better....when melting the beading look for a pool of molten plastic at the back and keep that pool going as you move along...that way you know it's all melting together....I'm sure theres some plastic lining video's a available which will show you in detail....hope this helps and carry on the good work as I do enjoy your video's 😁

Ladi. Consider using a vertical compression spring (coil or leaf), or wedge at the non-motor end of the actuator, to start the vertical movement of the panel. Try to use the power of retraction to lock the panel down with a caming latch. I'm hoping to design a lift wherein the panels are stored when the actuator is half extended, and will tilt one way when fully extended and tilt the other way when fully retracted (fewer actuators). If I can't , I'll use solenoids to lock right side or left side pivot points to get same result.

All that sealant slapped over the joints on the tank make me wonder if the plastic welds underneath are even water tight. Sorry for your set back guys. If they made that many changes without consulting you I personally would not pay. The drain off point was a joke. 5 litres left! As a welder and fabricator who has made his own thermal store out of stainless steel I'm interested to know what made you go the plastic route and what the pro's and con's are? I'm guessing the weight is the biggest attraction? Anyway keep up the good work guys, very thorough build detail and entertaining video's. I'm pinching your triple glazed Argon filled roof window idea for my truck conversion. Top man.👍👍👍👍

Suggestion, if you used a spring plunger for initial lifting it will reduce starting force for actuators as well as act as anti-vibration device.

Hey Ladi, I'm so glad your wanting to lift your solar panels with a actuator as I'm trying to do the same. I'm leaning towards using a bell-crank. Thinking if i push off of the side that's hinged I can connect to a stationary pivot point where the b/crank is and the other side of this b/crank will have some rod hooked to solar panels. When the actuator shoots out and pushes the b/crank, the other end will push against the solar panel and raise the opposite side than the one hinged down. In theory I think this should work,,, but I'm kind of waiting to see how you tackle this and margaret captures it on film hopefully in EP. 12 Stay safe & out of the cold

Thanks for the input. I(Ladi) considered scissor jack mechanism too. When you lay out all the measurements in 1:1 ratio you quickly realize not that many solutions are doable. We aim for very low profile and steep solar angle. Many people have done solar lifts already but we want to do it better.

Definitely build the tanks yourself. There are a lot of RU-vid videos about building fiberglass tanks that should be helpful! Fiberglass is very easy to use, can be built up over foam board to provide built-in thermal protection, and can be layered to a very strong thickness, and is infinitely customizable. If you're worried about leaching chemicals in the water, just glaze the interior with a food-safe epoxy. If you don't want to touch fiberglass, why not weld a stainless steel tank? Just some thoughts. Plastic isn't the only way to go. There's a ton of alternatives :) GOOD LUCK and HAVE FUN!

Bad luck about the tanks. Relying on others can be such a pain. I ordered my windows three weeks ago and have just been told now they won't be ready until late January. By Xmas they said! If you're going to use vinyl sheet flooring (I am), turn it up at the sides where it can't be seen by about 20mm. This way it will reduce the chance of any spillages, dust and dirt getting under the floor.

What about two actuators positioned to face eachother along one long edge of the solar frame. With a small "entry" angle of the opposing actuators (actuators fitted to reinforced section of the roof and a centrally placed bracket on the frame, say 8cm vertical height) the force of the actuators would result in the solar frame being lifted. No forces would be transmitted to the frame structure, just the solid metal bracket. For a 100cm actuator you would get approx a 45 degree panel angle which would be enough to make a significant increase in the solar yield and still be safe in light to moderate winds.

wind - aerodynamic shield for the batteries on the front roof is sufficient to deflect the air velocity sneaking under the battery beds. btw: all objects on the roof create additional vibration load and the ceiling from inside is better to be cross-beamed ;o). My neighbour made loo cistern by acrylic solvent welding. Worked pretty well. Dunno how that stands up to having 160Kg of water sloshing in it under a van, but I guess you can add strengthening baffles. Are you planning to use ABS or HDPE and heat weld instead? I did consider making a (steel) hot-water tank for a solar system a few years ago as ones with stratifiers in were incredibly expensive and don't fit in UK houses. As it was upstairs and leak consequences were large I wimped out in the end and just left that project for later. So I look forward to finding out how to do custom tank construction. Aluminium with a fibreglass liner is a good way of making something really strong. Or even just fibreglass in a former (and a bash plate on the bottom). Any fool can make fibreglass :-)

@@ladiandmargaret I would dump the tilting and rather get the aerodynamics right so that you doun't have wind-noises while driving. The tilting mechisem will be very anoying iff you have a constant wind-whine while driving. You got enough solar, it will ok withouht tilting. If you get some E-bikes (Enduro whith BBSHD) where it does make sence to Pedal, that is good for your health and will at least 3x 4x extend your range. 800Wh per day would be more than enough for 1 bike 1day 80km or 2000hm easy.

Have two cats in a small space and they lived on the boat with me. Use a Frisco Wall Sisal Cat Scratcher that works well. They don't like ones that are just flat against the wall, tho

Have to wrap it around a wall corner or they will not use it

What's wrong with aluminium or inox? When you do, use TefGel on all your bolts!

Bad luck - great video! 👍 Making custom tanks is a great option that could help in many builds. Would be interesting to see. You could create a second "tank" that goes around the isolation for protection (top side open). Or add pipes going through the tank for cabels or the break linkage under the Ducato...
