This is one of the best build overviews on RU-vid. No gimmicks, no time lapse, just the details that will really help others. Thanks for being so generous sharing your ideas and experience.
Congratulations looks very professional , the workmanship is first class and your 4 legged supervisor seems to have done a good job on quality control !
Great job and so very well explained - a really practical guide, and very inspiring - no nonsense commentary and to the point - just what folks are looking for versus the waffle and time wasting vids that seem to plague youtube - big well done!
Thank you so much, the video dosent really do justice to the total amount of work involved but I didn’t have anymore footage and it would probably have been a bit tiresome to watch had it been much longer but it gives it the basic outlines 😊 Thanks again.
@@onevanandhisdog3641 No No, certainly not tiresome, and I can very easily see the amount of work you put in - certainly wish I had your skills! Again, very well done, and enjoy 👍
Thanks Ian for a really great van build video. No nonsense and everything explained. It is also helpful that you don't underplay what a challenge it was to do it all. You have a great van.
Hi Pat, thank you for your kind words and glad you found the video useful. It’s easy to underestimate what a big job a conversion is but once completed it all becomes worthwhile. All the best 👍
@@onevanandhisdog3641 Hi, your knowledge on the electrics was impressive , did you teach yourself with reading ont tinterweb? Have you any advice on this please? Areas to go and read up would be useful. Which engine cc is it? I understand its euro 6 that is all. Happy New year to you also .
Hi Chris, yes I taught myself through watching RU-vid videos, I’ve done quite a bit of domestic wiring through my job as a gas engineer but wasn’t used to 12v van wiring. Greg virgoe’s videos were a huge help and for sizing up the wiring I used the wiring sizing calculator on ‘12 volt planet’s website, also I preferred to oversize the cable a little bit just to be safe even though it works out a bit more expensive. Also make sure you have a mega fuse between your batteries and your positive busbar. I used crimped connectors with shrink wrap over the joints where I joined wires just to add a bit more support and it’s been fine. All the best www.12voltplanet.co.uk/voltage-drop-calculator.html
It’s the 2.0 litre engine Chris, would have preferred the 2.2 for the extra grunt but they were only available new when I bought this and so were out of my price range. 👍
Great video, I am planning in getting a boxer L3H2 in a few months, First thing that came into my head watching this is how much weight you must have in the back! haha, I will be terrified to start, I will be sitting in the back scratching my head, but I really want a project to keep me busy and away from alcohol haha. thank you.
Hi, thanks for your comment. It’ll certainly keep you busy, mind, body and soul 🤣 but it’ll be worth it if you take your time and do it right. My van only weighed 3060 kg on completion, so not too bad. All the best with your project.
Thanks for your comment Nathan it’s much appreciated. I didn’t want the hassle and possible future leakage problems of cutting a large hole in the side of the van as the hole would also have intruded into the black plastic trim that runs across the sides of these vans. It’s honestly not a problem the way that it is. Cheers
Thanks for your comment, about 12k should get you there but this wasn’t expensive furniture board at £100 a sheet, the fridge was a month old off eBay and I saved £300 on that and I got the Truma at trade price so saved £200 on that too. Cheers.
@@onevanandhisdog3641 Ian. ! I retired from my job almost a year ago now and would love to try converting a van in the future. Is it easy to drive a Ford Transit and would it be just a case of getting used to spatial awareness of the van and it's dimensions. ? All the best Angela 😺💚🍀🍀😺💚
@@angelamurphy3331 Hi Angela, my van is a Peugeot boxer and is a bit wider than a Ford transit. It does take some getting used to when you start driving something this big but if you take your time and use the wing mirrors especially when going round tight corners cause the back wheels have a habit of hitting the kerb 🫣 But just go for it now that you have the time 😊👍
great build, thank you very much - I am unable to access the drawing with dimensions on iCloud ("Shared photos not available") - do you have any other way I could see them? thanks again :-)
Thanks for your comments, it was a bit of space that wouldn’t have been used for anything and it’s perfectly placed to be able to monitor and fiddle with the controls. Cheers
Hi. Great build. I’d very much like to see the iCloud layout you originally shared - but it seems the link on the description is now dead. Could you share a new link please?
@@onevanandhisdog3641 finally got myself a Boxer and was trying to download your layout and dimensions with little success, are you able to assist please
Hi Andy, I’ve been trying to sort this problem out for the last half hour, seems like the iCloud links only remain accessible for a short period of time, so I’ve deleted the old link and renewed it so it should work now. Cheers
Great video ! thanks for sharing , did you us the bit of furniture board you cut out of the shower front for the door or was the door cut from another complete board ? And what type of router cutter did you use to cut the door opening ? Sorry for all the questions , you have made a very good job , well done you must be proud of the finished van build Thanks
Hi Ned, thanks for the compliments and yes I’m proud of the van and how it turned out. The doors and all of the cupboards etc are the same piece of furniture board that I cut out, this way the grain in the wood matches up when the door is closed. From memory I think I used a 5.5mm straight router bit, the template for the cut out was 5mm larger than the actual cutout to allow for the guide in the router. Hope this helps. Thanks
Hi, it took about 7 months during the summer of 2020, it was during covid and I couldn’t work so I was spending every day on the van, it was my first build so it was slow progress but we’ll worth the effort. All the best 👍
This is great! Thank you. I have just bought the same model but 4x4. What was the cost of this conversion in materials and can you advise the source of this? Thanks.
Hi Andrea, this was done in 2020 but the cost of everything to date including upgrades as seen in my other videos was about 16K, the materials were sourced from lots of places, mainly eBay and the furniture board was from magnum motorhomes in Grimsby. Hope that helps a little. Thanks.
Hi David, I was at it for about 7 months during lockdown, but have since added a few extra things, first one I’ve ever done so I was probably a bit slow having to learn how to do it as a went along. Cheers.
Hi Stu, the windows were fitted by Joe at kestrel conversions in Barnsley, the cost of the windows and fitting in 2020 was about £700, the total cost for the van build was around £15K, 👍
Hi! Would it be possible to share the dimensions file again? I'm doing a L3H3 , I've got my dimensions all though out, but I'd like to double check / compare. Thanks in advance!
With the van being l3h2 is that a legal hight for a proper van conversion am thinking about buying one but would like to make it a legal change over on log book thanks any one that can help
Hi, as far as I am aware, you have to be able to stand up in the van which I can do as I have about 6 foot from floor to ceiling, I have not tried to have log book changed and so have no experience in these things but there are guidelines somewhere on a dvla website that lists all the criteria. Sorry I can’t help any further. Thanks for watching and all the best. Ian.
@@onevanandhisdog3641 thanks for your help its just some places I hear are funny about vans going on sites that are not registered don't no if that's true or not but thanks for your time.
