The seat rails proved to be a pain to remove, and because I couldn't find a lot of information about the best way to do that, I figured I would make a tutorial for anyone else converting a passenger van.

Another way to take care of those rails would be choosing a drill bit slightly larger than the bold diameter. Drill through the seat rail and the center of the bolt head. Once you find the depth needed to separate the head from the threads mark the bit with tape for depth. Idk if a couple good drill bits would've been cheaper than the blades or not.

That looks like one of the most enjoyable parts. Doesn't seem to matter how much I use them, but anytime there is metal, a sawzall, and grinding wheel, I'm all smiles.

I just removed my rails I took a 7/8" hole saw at the bolt locations , then drilled the bolts out with a 5/16 drill a lot less mess

What happened to the pieces that were left on top of the heat shield between the heat shield and the van floor? Were they left loose, and in there to rattle out on the road? Or will they stay up there and wear a hole in the heat shield and then finally work its way out? I have a 2000 vintage 1ton Chevy express van with those very same seat rails in this video. I like your solution a lot better than theirs. Still concerned with where the bits and pieces wind up though.

Can you explain a little more? So you covered the floor in 2 x 4s and then insulated after?

Thank you I went to remove these at work for a customer and was a little stumped... Pulled the carpet back and didn't see anything on the rail you had to cut out is where I started. Good to know the others bolt from underneath. Thanks for posting!!

I have the same van 2010 model. retired Air Force 29k miles. Pulled the panels did't remove head liner. Wasn't brave enough to remove seat rails so I installed a flush platform attached to 1x4 that ran between rails. Thanks

@@soholtbrothers I'm getting estimates from som welders to remove my extended seat rails so to cover the floor with .75" plywood in prep for a wheelchair platform lift. Can you share what is a reasonable price to remove?
@williambayh1574
@williambayh1574 4 года назад
@@soholtbrothers I have a '06 Chev Express 3500 that was a bus in Kingman, AZ. It came with a worn-out platform lift, rear entry, that must be removed. Remaining will be a flat rubber floor covering supported by .75" plywood and tie-downs and shoulder/ seat belt; this rear area is already prepped for occupied wheelchair transport. The new wheelchair lift will be side-entry. The seat rails are 30% removed in the back from side to side of the van, and .75" plywood, covered (glued) with a layer of rubber flooring as power wheelchairs destroy the carpet. Your costs, labor time, and video give me a realistic idea of what it's worth to pay a welder to complete the removal of the remaining seat rails. How did you remove the bolts left sitting in the under-carriage you mentioned? ...is the under-shield there on your Chevy because it has four-wheel-drive? Thanks

is the express a good choice for MPG ? like how many will it get? I know no camper van is going to be all the great , but it sure takes a long time to pay off the extra 20 000 someone spends on a expensive Benz van or whatnot.

Do you guys have a video on removing the rear passenger airbags? If not, what did you do for those? Working on my 2019 3500 and trying to figure out the best approach for this. Thanks!

Very Nice, just picked up a 2019 Express 3500 extended. I also removed the seats for use of dog crates / camping gear. Do you think I could "deck" the existing and put a rubber mat on it? I would liek to maintain the passenger integrity in case we ever decide to sell. What do you think ? Thanks !

Seems like you've decided not to raise the roofline (or start with a van with a high roofline) so that you'll be able to stand inside the van. Interested in your though process on making this decision.
@craigknott928

@@soholtbrothers I did watch your school bus build and its use...thanks for doing that. I was wondering if you were leaning toward using the side tent as you did with the bus. I have gone back and forth on this question and have the same concerns/considerations you've outlined. I am leaning toward a pop top for those brief stays in a spot where you don't want to set up a tent or there isn't the right space for it. I would love to have a permanent high roof but have seen what high cross winds can do with a vehicle like that, not to mention clearance. Thanks again and looking forward to the build as it progresses.

Howdy Sam, my name is cliff, I have a 2015 chevy express 3500 that i am going to convert. Regarding the seat rail removal, is there anything structural to the seat rails or anything bolted underneath to the seat rail that will come loose after cutting the rails loose from the top.
@cliffordwhitaker5711
@cliffordwhitaker5711 4 года назад
@@soholtbrothers hi Sam , its cliff again. I appreciate your response. I do have a follow up question. After reading you response, i climbed under my van to get busy. What found was abit concerning. The long rail on the drivers side that gives the most access to the bolts is bolted directly to cross members that support the floor of the van. By removing the bolts, the cross members are no longer attached to floor of the van. Can you give me some further insight to my dilemma please.
