I practiced that Van Dam split myself when I was younger. It has helped me tremendously. Now when I ride a bicycle I can go for 100’s of miles without any pain since I’m numb from the waist down.
Before the Bruce Lee's craze I started taking Tae Kwon do which is the god of leg work. The first few months was pain after every class once a week but every day after I went on a 5 mile walk. I could split like Van Damme but not that quick. It still helped me learn kicks easier and I was able to retain my flexibility well into my 50's. Van Damme's movies inspired me to learn the split at a young age. After trying it for a full year, countless agonizing tries, I was finally able to do a Full split. I'm talking balls to the floor lmao. People in school used to be shocked. I think I was the only person in school, aside from a girl who was a cheerleader, who was able to do a full split. And YES, when you learn the split well, it isn't hard to do that split kick he does. THAT shit used to get me high fives by everyone during gym. 🤣🤣

A buddy of mine did this split. We were walking back to our truck. The pavement was icy, he slipped and ended up in the Van Damme semi split. We had to take him to the hospital for a pulled groin. That was 25 years ago and to this day we still joke around and call him James Brown or Van Damme.
