I bought this at a riteaid as it was like $14 and I really enjoyed my last safety razor. The open blade is not nearly as simple to use as the last one I owned. A few months in and I continue to cut myself each shave independent of the setting. If you like open blade safety razors you'll probably love this lil thing as it's really sleek and well made, but if you prefer a less aggressive shave stay away.

This could be an introduction to the futur and will maybe help people take the plunge to a merkur futur. Having used a cheap ten dollar Chinese clone of the futur and having used it and got a futur open box for less than forty dollars. I use my merkur futur all the way up to six and enjoy it. This van der hagen could be a travel razor perhaps.

Just got it at Wal-Mart on clearance for $7.49. I shaved at the 2 1/2 setting and it was pretty aggressive for me.

Van der hagen is a great company putting out affordable products! I used the deluxe shave soap with shae butter and aloe vera. I'm always amazed at how dense and creamy the lather is!

Actually Mark, there was the Ming Shi then came the Q shave. The Ming was my first razor 4 or 5 years ago. Still enjoy it but don't try a head shave!!

I'm 58 years old and just now learning how to use a safety razor. I'm tired of the expense and lousy shave I get from standard style blades. When I started shaving as a teenager, Bic had released their blades and that's what I used from the start. I wear a goatee so at least I don't have to worry about shaving around my nose or lips with one of these things.

I've learned that the skin oil the face produces is a pre shave oil. I shave before a shower, if I shower before I shave I get cuts.

That's interesting. At first glance I expected it to be a simple re brand, but the weight and length difference were a shock for me. I'm glad to see them branching out and 19 dollars seem to be a decent price, not much more than the original vanderhagen butterfly razor.

I was surprised to see this razor at my local Rite Aid. I was immediately familiar with the shape and thought it might be a rebranded Merkur. Apparently, it's not a rebranded Merkur but it worked really well for me. I am a 1 pass shaver sometimes 2 passes (east to west) and this razor works great at setting 1.5 to 2 for me. For the price you simply cannot beat what Van Der Hagen is offering. Rapira, Feather, Derby Extra, Astra Platnium and Gillette Yellow 7 o Clock are some of my goto blades that work well in this razor as well as my Rockwell 6C that I also prefer on setting 2.

Seconded. I have an old Merkur and a Feather. Picked up the Van Der Hagen Adjustable Twist and it gave me an extremely smooth shave. I was a little nervous at first because of the very open design. I started at the lowest setting after a couple of days growth and got most of my face done with the first pass, which was so smooth I didn't hesitate to turn up the dial for a second. I got a little more bite but the the shave was still very smooth. I then had to turn up the dial up a little more to touch up a few spots. Since cleaning it does take a little more effort, this isn't the razor if you want a fast shave. Taking my time I got a great, smooth shave. Worth much more than the 20 I paid. Don't tell Van der Hagen. ;)

I just picked this up yesterday after being in shock......I have the Futur and Vision......the Van Der Hagen was a complete surprise for 20.00. I was just glad to see the tradition of double-edge shaving being offered at my local grocery store. I live in a pretty small town in the middle of nowhere. My first shave was at 4......pretty darn aggressive(which I like) and seemed easier to hold than my Futur....Great review!!!!

I had a Chinese clone of the Merkur, I think it was the Q-Shave, and it was very difficult getting the cap back on. With clones you take some chances.

@the Game, Review and Reallife Channel Very similar. But, identical? The Futur is heavier. This may or may not be a factor for everyone.:) EDIT - I should add, with any razor, YMMV. Yes, some may prefer the Q-shave or Van der Hagen over the Futur. Again, YMMV with each.:) Bottom line, it's a great time to be doing the traditional wet shave. So many great choices.

I got the Q-shave a couple years ago but I could never get a good shave with it. If I remember right people where fixing the blade alignment on them. I should dig it back out and give it a try. Thanks for the video!

Just bought this baby, and haven't used it yet, so I really appreciate the review. It might be lighter than the Futur, but I've never held a Futur, and the Hagen feels great in the hand. Only potential complaints I see is I have a 'stache, and I shave under the nose, so I like a thinner head for accuracy, but I usually use a shavette for that anyway. Also, not a big fan of the overhang past the ends of the blades. I like less clearance than that, for getting more accurate with my sideburns. They might be "entry level" razors, and don't have a big reputation, but a butterfly Hagen was the first DE I bought, and it's still serving me well, while the Parker I had broke within a couple years. I'll try this before paying $80 for a Merkur any day 👍

Jason, yes, some wet shavers find the razor head to be rather cumbersome. I've found that it shaves just fine and maneuvers well once I became accustomed to the size. I adjusted. However, I agree that the north to south pass under the lip is not as complete as with some razors with a thinner profile. But, I make up for it going across the grain. At this price point, it's a nice way to test the waters to see if the razor head and overall feel of the razor works for you. If it does, then you can purchase the more expensive and heavier Futur with a bit more confidence knowing what to expect.

Nice comparison shave. Regarding the head size...I have a handlebar mustache, so getting under the nose doesn't come into play at all. I've been wondering about the VDH version of the Futur. And it looks like a viable option for the budget conscious. Thanks.

As soon as I watched your review, I found myself at my local Giant eagle, and purchase this for 20 bucks didnt see the other one I brought a year ago had to look on the bottom far right . Any just shaved and like it .used astra green as a test like you . If a razor dont pass AG razors , then what good are them . So those little 5 blade plastic vaults are A OK with AZ. AZ says to just put your used blades inside and drop it in the Recycle Bin.

Avery, you may want to do this without a blad installed. simnply, grasp the razor head on the ends and turn the handle. With a blade installed, use some care that your hands don't slip off the head, or use a towel to protect the hand.

The Futur was my second razor and my first adjustable razor and I fell in love with it and still feel the same about it to this day, I’m really interested giving this Van Der Hagen a spin for sure! Great review Mark thanks for the information loved the video!

Thanks, Jason. I enjoyed using the Van der Hagen razor. I agree with you. The Mekur Futur is an awesome razor. It's certainly smoother than the Van der Hagen and the added weight is a real plus. Plus, the chroming on the Futur is beautiful. But, the Van der Hagen is a good bargain alternative.

Hi, Shayan Ali. I think the VDH has better blade balance than the QShave. I just wish the VDH had a bit more heft. I think it edges out MY QShave in a couple of ways. My Qshave has that ever-so-slight blade imbalance. Also, the QShave is milder than the original Futur. Whereas the VDH is closer to the Futur when it comes to calibration and aggression levels through the various settings (at least the three or so that I use:)). I like that. Overall, the Van Der Hagen gives a better shave due to the blade balance being quite good and its calibration. I'll put it this way, when the two are side by side in my razor drawer, I'm going to pick up the VDH almost every time. I'll also add...I always thought that if I were to travel, I wouldn't take my Futur, I'd take a clone. It used to be that my travel plans would call for me to take the QShave. Well, now, I'll be taking the Van Der Hagen instead.:)

Great review as always Mark! Really surprised to see this clone coming out from Vanderhagen. I am not a big fan of my Futur, it is just too aggressive for me even on setting one. Though I think at this price range this could be a good quality razor for a lot of people. Have a great day!
