Ed's encounters with Alan helped make 1984 a superb Rock album.

Most do not understand the positive influence in Ed’s playing Holdsworth had. Excellent comment. 😎

@@pm2819 Agreed, excellent comment. Insightful comment, most people don't but should know that about that album in particular

Eddie Does a great job emulating his hero. I love both of theses guitarist... If fun to hear Ed play in the style of Holdsworth. Great performance.

Edward's doing just fine on here. The crowd loved it. That's what really counts.

Eddi has a great ear, I think if he would of been around different music circles (like jazz/fusion) he would of pikdup a lot more musical vocabulary.
@1FeistyKitty
@1FeistyKitty 3 года назад
he has all the vocabulary he needs considering he was on the top of the mountain and has never been topped - don't judge his ability in jazz by one short improvised jam. If Eddie decided at any point to put out a jazz album it would have been great and probably the most unique stuff ever. He had an incredible sense of time and feel. He should have put out a jazz album and freak everyone out and he should have started another band with Alan. He also should have changed the band name to Sam Halen when Sammy joined.

Of course Eddie stumbled along, but good grief he was going for it with his hero Allan in a style of music that he just dabbles in. Kudos to Ed👍 Holdsworth is the absolute master in fusion style, with flawless technique. But Eddie will always be my favorite rock player ever, for so many reasons. His tone, feel, approach, fire, and sense of humor in his playing, not to mention that he redefined rock guitar. Not too shabby...

Great points! Eddie was having fun and never intended this to be heard. Hell, it still largely HASN'T BEEN!! Only one song does everyone know of ED and HOLDS... Of these five or six though that only a few thousand have heard, numbers four and five, rock pretty damn good!! 'And really, Ed has his wish - most still have not heard them!!! 'Just the one, long, frankly boring one!!!

Vanshipman... I don't believe Eddie was struggling but he was not in his comfort zone & for him to jump in there & go outside the box shows what a real class player he was & to do it live is even more amazing. We miss them them both & what treat it must have been for both to do this.

This song was a Holdsworth tune for many years under different names, but it finally made it to record as "Gas Lamp Blues". One old boot I have has this as part of "Stop Fiddlin'" as well.

“The song was a riff that Allan’s bass player and I came up with. So I was more comfortable because I was more familiar with what we played.” quote from EVH in a 2013 interview about the date in April '82. Funny story. Search out the published story by Martin Kielty in 2017. 😉

Jeff Berlin on bass for sure, unless there was a second jam I don't know about. Jeff says he had to shout the chord changes for Allan's songs at Ed as they went along. I don't know who the drummer was.

whats funny is that eddie has a little trouble soloing through the changes (but it has some nice moments) and sounds really good playing the chords and rhythm stuff behind holdsworth. just my opinion. wish I could've seen it live

I wish the band would go a little less nuts during Eddie's playing so I could evaluate more clearly how he's navigating... But probably in the moment they were just you know trying to elicit the most frenzy they could

I wish Eddie had done more fusion based stuff. Given that he could play Mozart by ear as a kid, I wonder if he got bored with night after night of the VH hits?

Edward did fine on Holdsworth's turf while Holdsworth claimed a bunch of times he was not able to do full on Rock on Ed's turf.

@Andy Butler Yeah, people listen to one quality of Holdsworth, and dismiss the rest. Holdsworth was a master of guitar, in most it's forms.

I downloaded this jam back in Kazaa days. I've had it as an mp3 for along time and now I find it here on RU-vid after a curious search LOL. It is areal gem of a jam from some master musicians. I still want to know who is playing bass and drums. Bass sounds like it could be Jeff Berlin or Jimmy Johnson. Drums sounds like Terry Bozzio or Steve Gadd....Who knows???? Who has details?????

Gary Husband on drums, Jeff Berlin on bass. I have spoken to Gary Husband about it.

Alan has got tons of scales to play while Eddie only got 2 ears :) and he did not bad It's not about the contest here .. as I am sure Alan could have lost in jamming with EVH band or other metal bands

Does anyone else feel like Wolfie is being held back by the lack of activity in the VH camp? If they were active then that's one thing but going 2-3 years between doing anything...these are prime years for Wolfie who could quite easily start something on his own. The kid is special!!! Enormous fan of King Edward here, but this just doesn't seem right.
