Song is about his preference for a "real" girl. Home grown and down home. Poundcake is an analogy for a woman that is real and not trying to be something she's not. It's not about sex. Note the lyric "...tried a little bit of everything. But, it's all sex without love. I found the real thing is poundcake."
@Shannon Rehwinkel actually eddie never listened to jimi hendrix. he listened to eric clapton. eddie still has people wanting to be like him generations later while hendrix is just a guy people complain about whether or not he was better than everyone.
There will never be another like him I’ll be surprised if I see it in my lifetime because I was listening to Van Halen the day they were leased the very first album because word got out long before they released that album that there was a band named Van Halen they were known before the album even dropped
"Poundcake" refers to a real woman, not fake, high maintenance women. Sammy talked about it when the song came out. There was some MTV special where he talked about it.
Which is why everyone in the dressing room were lathering it on and the lady outside was al natural. Okay, she had some trim on but not the heavy poweder or cone boobie bra! what a look.
Funny story. Way back when I just got that album and was writing lists to organize the music on my ipod, I was using the initials for the albums so save me having to write so much. I started writing the initials for this one and then I was like OH. lol Didn't realize it about the title until then.
Thank you. I just said the same thing. He has only done "1" reaction of Van HAGAR and doesn't seem to know there were two singers. It is up to us to inform and give him the knowledge. I have given him many Van HAGAR videos the past few months. Needs to do the live concerts so then he will know the difference of the two singers.
So true. And the thing for me was that he was recognizable with his playing. His sound changed with who was doing vocals, but it was always distinctly Eddie. Dave, Sammy, Garry. All 3 Eddie had tweaked his sound to match up with the vocalist, but you could always tell it was him playing.
"finish what you started" "Cradle will rock" "Janey's crying" Just a few, have you reacted? R I P. Eddie Condolences to YOUR SON & VALERIE (ex wife, but she still has love for you ,you gave her a son wish the 2 of you could have gotten back together)
Aint that the truth? A bit of my youth is devastated and lost... LOVE YOU EDDIE AND VAL I HAVE LOVED YOU FOREVER AS WELL. when these 2 got together I was jealous and happy. BLESS you WOLFIE. you have 2 very talented and beautiful parents which would explain your georgus self. BLESS YOU JAMAL... 🙉🙈🙊🎸🎤
@@karaminalee 👍👍👍🎸🎤🎸 no matter the day I hear this music or some ACDC and I am suddenly 16 17 again and damnit if I am not there again. The power and magic of music...
@@hmonster1XL True. Some people consider Mitch Malloy to be in there too, but he never made it to the studio to record anything before he quit. But that's another story.
They lost the makita drill from the original recording, and had to settle for a lower rpm makita for the tour, making the song sound a little different live.
@Stoney Bonez Since practically _everyone_ had been copying EVH for 15 years before both songs were released (1991 for both), I doubt it. Plus, Paul idolized Ed. I guess anything is possible, but I don't recall Ed being upset with anyone copying his style any more than I recall Billy Gibbons being upset with Ed copying his sound.
My hubby and me saw VanHager in 1995, 4 th row seats with Eddie right in front of us. I swear he looked right at me & smiled! But he was always smiling. I’m sad he’s passed.
Setting Eddie's guitar mastery aside for a moment, can we all agree that Alex and Michael combined into the finest rhythm sections in all of rock and roll history??
And after Glover and Paice, McCartney and Starr, Deacon and Taylor...🙄🤔😆😆😆 Why can't people just say "my favorite" but instead insist that their favorite is the GOAT? A: 2020 is becoming a binary matrix... P.S. I hear that guy Neil Peart had a pretty good bass player, maybe if he could drum better....😜
I regret that I can only upvote this once. "Dreams" is 100% on point. Here's a handy link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aTQ2-RonGq0.html
Try “ When it’s Love” featuring Sammy Hagar on lead vocals. He joined VH after David Lee was let go. They reached another level musically and of success. Also try “ Dreams” I promise you will fly with these songs. With Hagar, Van Halen’s sound matured but they never lost the fun, or joy of just playing great music for the masses
Fun Fact: Eddie Van Halen was originally a drummer when he was younger and his brother Alex, who is Van Halen's drummer was a guitar player. Then they switched, and Alex is pretty damn good drummer too.
Actually pound cake wasn’t about any part of the female anatomy. Sammy did an interview with Kurt Loder from VH1. Sam explained that it’s about the type of woman he prefers. Meaning she’s plain, clean and simple. Not too hard to figure out, not covered up with a bunch of stuff, she just is what she is and he decided to call it pound cake. All of the sexual innuendo was just optics for the video......
I was so excited when my son took me to a Van Halen-Hagar concert. My one goal: how did Eddie make the sound in Poundcake? It was a cordless drill against his guitar! Thank you Eddie for coloring my life!
Mr. Big actually did the electric drill thing first on their song "Daddy, Brother, Lover, and Your Little Boy ( The Electric Drill Song)" from their second album "Lean Into It." It's the first song on the album. That album was released in March 1991 while Van Halen's "F.U.C.K." album (For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge) was released in June 1991. "Poundcake" was the first song on that album too. Eddie does a fantastic job employing the electric drill as a 🎸 guitar pick in this song but it does seem like he got the idea from Mr. Big's lead 🎸 guitar player Paul Gilbert. You should do a reaction to that song Jamel. Mr. Big is a very underappreciated band here in the states ( they were huge in Japan!). They have many great rock songs in spite of their two biggest hits here in America being ballads ( To Be With You and Just Take My ❤ Heart). Also, and obviously this didn't get nowhere as much attention, but they lost a band member recently too. Drummer Pat Torpey passed away in 2017. He was right around the same age as Eddie Van Halen and both bands are from Southern California( Van Halen from Pasadena and Mr. Big from L.A.). Also, ironically enough, founding member and bassist of Mr. Big Billy Sheehan also played in David Lee Roth's band before he formed Mr. Big. A lot of connections between these two bands!
@@shawnlusby1538 The drill never touched the strings . the pick ups were very sensitive and that's where the sound came from. This is well documented.
Useless trivia: the long-haired blonde in the dressing room was actress and G.L.O.W. wrestler Becky Mullen, who also sadly passed away earlier this year from cancer
I was lucky to see Van Halen twice it was with Sammy Hagar when they came to Hawaii. Both concerts Eddie had that big smile on his face while playing his guitar. I'm glad Sammy & Eddie patch thing's up before Eddie left us.
SUCH A BAD NEWS TODAY MY CO-WORKER CAME IN A TOLD ME THAT NEWS I WAS BUMMED OUT BUT FIRST HE SAID "ALEX" I WAS OOHHHH NO NOT THE DRUMMER BUT THEN HE WAS LIKE NO I MEAN "EDDIE" NO MAN THE GUITAR MAN WOW EITHER WAY SOME SAD NEWS TO HEAR
Thanks for another fantastic reaction with thoughtful commentary. Your kindness shines through in each of your videos. If you are looking for off the beaten path VH to react to, I suggest studio versions of any of the following: Drop Dead Legs, Little Guitars, Dance the Night Away, So This Is Love, 5150, Best of Both Worlds, Cabo Wabo, Top of the World, or Don't Tell Me What Love Can Do.
"Pound cake" they are talking about women if you listen to the lyrics that are plain clean and simple. Not covered up with a fake image.Home grown and down home cooking with old time recipe..Also Sammy stated this..
Glad to see someone reacting to one of their later songs with Sammy Hagar. They had a lot of hits on those later records too. You should check out Michael Anthony's ULTRA BASS solo performance to go along with Eddie's Eruption solo.
Great song! You should do the song Dreams with the Blue Angels and you still haven't done I Can't Drive 55 by Sammy Hagar!!! It's required listening!!! For Dreams do the 2.8 million view one by Leftyloose! Plus you get to see the absolute nerves of steel of the Blue Angels!
R.I.P. Eddie Van Halen 🎸 You changed the sound of guitar and your legacy will last forever. 🎶 *I saw Van Halen in the early 80's - I sat third row/center at Madison Square Garden. During the little break in "Eruption" my friend, Jackie and I, screamed, "We Love You, Eddie!!!" He winked and smiled at us. What a great concert!
I couldn't have been very far from you. 16 years old. I had tickets in the mezzanine and made my way down in FRONT of you. No one blocking my view. An awesome night indeed.
Jamel.... Eddie wrote all of the music for Van Halen , with colaberations from Michael Anthony , Alex , David Lee Roth , Sammy Hagar (much more than the others ) , at times , but each one without saying it , knew to lay back and just let Eddie handle it ... Every single song in Van Halen's massive Catalog , Not one of those Track s was released untill Eddie gave the green light to do so . With that being said , There's a song on the 1984 album that most think is about his self right before he found Fame . It's alot of musicians , like myself , favorite tune on that album.... I've requested several really badass tunes for you over time that I'm sure would have blown you away and you most likely have never heard before.and would've really appreciated . But.... all of the requests were over looked apparently .... I understand though ... I'm sure that You're drowning in all of the requests you receive ... All good brother . I'm gonna go ahead n try again...maybe I'll get lucky and you'll happen to see it ... I'm hoping to see your reaction to this song .. "Top Jimmy" on Van Halen 1984 Album ... I'd bet that you haven't heard this tune before .... If u see this ... I hope you Enjoy it Thx man. Ken E. G.
Eddie was frequently spotted around my hometown of Shreveport, La (of all places) back in the 1980s. He met Valerie Bertinelli backstage at a concert here in 1980. Her family was living here as her father was a “big wheel” in General Motors, which had a manufacturing facility here at the time. After they married they would frequently return for visits.
Lol funny when he mentions there are those kicks not releasing that is not DLR fronting the band, but Sammy Hagar and his pipes. Great song. I'm more of the Dave era of the band, but always liked Sammy and they made Beautiful music together. More pop rock then the heavy hard rock of the Dave years, but good nonetheless. Rip Guitar Hero of my childhood 😥
Interesting you did one with Sammy singing. Some will argue those are Eddie's best guitar days. The one album was For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge. That worked great on a concert T-shirt LOL. Look at each letter of each word haha. These guys were definitely party Boyz
RIP EVH. I prefer the Dave years, but give respect where it's due Sammy was a great replacement. I went to this show way back in '91 Van Halen definitely rocked the house. They also had a great opening act for this tour. An up and coming young band named Alice in Chains. What a show.
The clouds parted and the gods smiled down upon this song. The band, song, that driving beat, and the production are so tight and cohesive. And a heaping tablespoon of Eddie Van Halen. Majick. One of my VH favorites.
Eddie's fantastic isn't he & his bro on drums , the best , try Amsterdam is da bomb Jamal , thank you , it's hurting me bad & his music makes me smile & I'm going on 63 , love & light 🙏🙏🤗🤗💜😔
This album title is "For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge" aka The F.U.C.K album. Van Halen were master geniuses with word play. Both Van Halen and Van Hagar eras! Many songs had double or secret meanings
I started playing guitar because of Eddie over 30 years ago. I never imagined death of someone I've never met could hit me so hard. I've seen several iterations of Van Halen multiple times in concert. Ed's solo was ALWAYS the highlight of the entire concert. You should absolutely check out Best of Both Worlds off the 5150 album. It is a phenomenal song with a great message.
J, Look for Ed’s solo song Catherine. If you want to see him give all he had, that one rivals Eruption. It’s the most raw and vulnerable performance I’ve ever seen!! He literally drops his guitar the same way others drop a mic. Keep on Keepin’ On, friend!! #cryinthroughthisloss
Yes is was. And he does it live too. Also thrice during the solo. Most people do not notice it. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KhbGSprvfbE.html
@@neillenet291 Paul & Billy Sheehan actually play with a triangular pick mounted on a bit chucked into the drill on Mr. Big's "Daddy, Brother, Lover, Little Boy (the electric drill song)" Eddie just uses the electrical interference of the spinning motor & pickups. Vastly different.
