I am a software developer and I have been working remotely as a freelance for almost 3 years now. And I love it, I wouldn’t go back. Actually I’m thinking of getting my own van and nomading differently. And I have to say your videos are a big part of what inspires me to try it out

I finished a bachelors degree while living full time in a van. I went to UC Riverside and made my schedule of classes condensed to tue-Thursday then for the days I didn’t have class, I drove out toward Big Bear most of the time in the summer, and Joshua tree in the winter. I tried to download as much as I could on campus WiFi, and then would work at coffee shops and Walmart parking lots if I needed WiFi. But most of the time I could get all my studying done without internet. I thought it was great I loved being out in JoshuaTree studying for finals

As to what I do. I started a non-profit where I serve the indigenous communities of Latin America. I enlighten people as to the harsh yet beautiful life style of them. I also provide a more steady income by designing products from their artisan products and then invest the net profits back into their community. Picture beautiful handbags made from the Maya weaving/embroidery. I do this with the other indigenous communities of the Oaxaca and Inca. This is very rewarding and so much learning involved.

I started Leathercrafting after quitting the worst job I've ever had... Amazon. During the plandemic, I met someone who had a class on Leathercrafting and I figured why not try something new. Little did I know how much I'd love it, I have now been a Leathersmith for 1 year and am learning more and more each day. The greatest thing about this and selling my stuff at markets and online, is I can do it anywhere. And when I get my own rig, that's exactly what I'll be doing. Traveling and Leathercrafting!

@@ChristianSchaffer Thank you, I very much enjoy it! Well maybe one day we will run into eachother on the road and I can make you something! I did finally get my van in February and am slowly working on it. I'll probably work on it more once I help my mom move out of California. But I'm stoked to finally have a van I can call home.

When I was growing up my mom said she could see me having a job where I read books all day in my bathrobe. Now as a freelance editor, I do just that! It has been the most freeing working for myself, having an entrepreneurial and authority-averse nature. The strict 9-5 was soul-sucking. But, I work with publishers mostly and the one I work with the most was bought by one of the big 3 a few years back. Since then I’ve seen deadlines and pay get worse and worse. I can really see the beauty and benefit of diversifying your income streams because freelance work can be so variable. Saving for the lean times is essential too. The whole flow of work and spending changes when you work for yourself. It took me a little time to adjust to that, but once I did and learned to trust in provision coming to me, I found a much more holistic and enjoyable way of life.
@ChristianSchaffer

I love that you found a way to turn your passion for reading into a career. Also very jealous that you get to sit around in a bathrobe, that’s one thing I really miss that isn’t so practical in the van 😅

I work remotely full time and did this by simply asking my manager. I was in an inside sales role and explained I was moving to the US (from Canada) and that I’d love to continue working for the company if they would accommodate me moving. I worked for the company for 3 years at this point and was performing extremely well - so keep tenure and performance in mind when positioning this to your manager.

Great video Chris, I just recently stumbled onto your channel. You give good, solid advice which is really needed. As for work, one suggestion I would make for anyone who's interested in being on the road a lot but are unsure if they would like it, is to get a class A license and drive OTR in a semi. Allows one to get a taste of life on the road while being paid to do it and you'll have much of the same challenges as you would in a van or other vehicle life. Right now is a good time for this as a lot of companies are offering huge sign on bonuses and paid training. After you're training is over you will usually have a trainer/mentor who then teaches you the ins and outs of being an over the road driver. Having a class A license can open up a lot of opportunities that the majority of people never even think about, as it's not only for driving big rigs.

Great video…..I’m over in Scotland and worked remotely from home pretty much all year, with 2 or 3 visits to the office. I even worked from other parts of the UK, Spain and Cyprus. I worked in IT and my contacts were worldwide. I loved it, as it was a far less stressful time, you could manage time better, stop interruptions easily, no commute to and from work. I highly recommended this lifestyle to many friends before covid happened and now so many are living and believing in remote working as the best way to achieve their work/life balance. I’m pretty much retired now, and am contemplating buying a wee campervan…..not for permanent living, but occasional trips in Scotland, and a few longer ones into Europe. Time will tell. Keep the great videos coming

Dental Billing does not have a lot of resources available like Medical Billing & Coding. Unfortunately it’s mainly learned in office. I started with editing for like $3 on upwork to now being a content manager and social media writer for companies I really enjoy working with. Initially I started working remote after I was bound to a bed for many months after a large operation. It went to well that I just continued after that. I currently work 100% remotely and am a dog mom and SFH homeowner. I'm considering RV life (van life poses too many challenges to me as a single person) as an alternative to selling my home and buying a townhome. I think the only major thing stopping me is I want my non-dog-friendly pitbull to have the space (fenced yard or basement) to have the zoomies and run free. I love these tips and it's given me a lot to think of, both with the pros and cons of van/RV living. Thank you for sharing!w

I'm an OG IT professional. For years (pre-covid), I would 'go somewhere warm' and airbnb for 3-4 months each winter. Once I get my new van this Spring, I'll be working remotely from the van for at least six months a year. This will prevent me from wandering too far into the wilderness due to needing to always 'be online', but those steady paychecks sure will take the edge off every day 'van life' issues...

I actually enjoyed the interruptions in my office. I liked helping staff and other attorneys. I am also an introvert, and work as a nurse. I absolutely love what I do. There are many nurses that work remotely as travel nurses, and although that does appeal to me at times, so far I have stayed away from becoming a travel nurse simply because they don't often get the support or proper resources they need to be ideally taking care of their patients. This makes the work extra stressful and is not fair to the patient either. A travel nurse needs to really known what they are doing as a nurse because they often don't have the backup from other nurse friends that you get on the floor from working with people full time, and everyday. So for now, I will continue to work as a nurse for the Mayo Clinic, the greatest hospital in the world, and think about travel nursing for the future. Thanks for sharing your ideas!

I’m a nurse as well and I decided to start travel nursing earlier this year. While there can be challenges along the way, as there is even when working as staff or in any job, I’m so glad I decided to take the leap. The freedom that it gives me to choose where and when I want to work, and to take as much time off as I want is priceless. I even did an assignment at Mayo Clinic that just ended in October and I’m enjoying time off until I take another assignment next month. I guess my point is that you are a nurse so I know you’re strong and resilient, which is why I think you shouldn’t wait to go traveling. We only get this one precious life to live and there are no do-overs, so why not go out and enjoy it? You can give your patients the best of you and also see the country. It’s a win-win. Just my opinion 🙂

I don't have a critical position with my current employer and work between multiple sites so I think that has helped to be away for so long. Thanks for the resources, I will definitely begin the search!

I've never had the opportunity to work remotely and now I'm a retired old man. As you list these choices you have thought of it is very apparent that many people might be getting a glimpse of a future they had not foreseen. You passion is evident. Your choice to share yourself with us belies the fact you are an introvert. And excuse me but did I see a flash of "coy" in relation to guitar lessons? Stay well and be safe.

Hi Christian, great video! I loved the remote resources list you included toward the end of your video. I've worked remotely since 2019 as a consultant via my own business, and as a data mapper/analyst for a non profit public health organization. I currently work for the non profit and while I enjoy what I do, I can't say that I love it. It sustains me while I finish my design degree. I LOVE design, though, so I'm looking forward to figuring out ways I want to explore that passion. Your vlogs definitely inspire me to think more deeply about how I really want to live my life. Interested in the road workshop. My build is done and when my son moves out (about to turn 16) I have aspirations to live on the road for a year or more. I work in IT as a systems engineer so I believe my income is taken care of. I don’t have a specific question but I’m anxious to gain some efficiencies on the road. At the moment everything feels like an ordeal. Cooking, cleaning dishes, showering, finding a spot to sleep, etc. I thrive on structure (autopilot) when it comes to the mundane aspects of life so more freedom and fun can be had. I feel that’s my weakest point and it’s unclear whether that’s due to my approach, my build, or my rookie status. Perhaps hearing more details on the mundane aspects of your 3+ years can provide some insights. Hopefully I can get the “adulting” under control so more life can be easily had. 😋 Sorry for the long comment. Hope I didn’t lose you.

Christian, I have followed you for a while now. It's your fault that I bought a sprinter (Otis) 4-6 weeks ago!! (HA). I have worked remotely since 1998. As long as I was able and willing to follow the sunrises and sunsets of time zones, had great cell (voice) and data nobody really cared where I was. There were the infrequent and sometime frequent need to get in front of people, but mostly I was able to manage these events. The cool part was nobody ever knew I was in Madrid, Hanalei Bay, Del Mar, PNW, Naples, etc.. I hate everything about the pandemic, but one thing is certain - the pandemic has solidified and re-defined remote worker. With that said, I retired several years ago and earlier this year went back to work with a non-profit assisting vets with PTSD and substance abuse issues. They usual run together. Otis, Charley (doodle) and I have had several shakedown trips and several more planned. We leave in February for full-time adventures and the job is coming with me!! The same conditions apply; nobody cares where I am at as long as I satisfy the conditions mentioned above.
