Add to your bucket list the Caesar cocktail: "The Caesar, also known as the Bloody Caesar, is considered Canada’s national cocktail. The key ingredients are vodka, clam juice, tomato juice, spices and Worcestershire sauce. It is typically served in a highball glass rimmed with celery salt and garnished with a celery stalk, olives and lime. Food and beverage worker Walter Chell invented the Caesar in Calgary, Alberta, in 1969. Since then, the drink’s popularity and origin have made it a national cultural icon. Canadians drink more than 400 million Caesars annually. However, it has not achieved significant reach beyond Canada." (Canadian encyclopedia). Look out for poison ivy as you stroll through the forest.
Hey you guys, welcome to Canada! I am native canadian from the Cree tribe based in central Alberta. If you are heading out this way, here is a few things about Alberta. The capital of Alberta is Edmonton, where this city has the most sunny days in the entire country! Alberta is home to the oil sands and where most people come to work, the oil sands are based in northern Alberta in Fort McMurray. Lots of money to be made up there is you have a trade. Anyway, I see you have a bucket list, and you have Ketchup chips, so cool, but you need to add "All Dressed Chips" to your list, they are kinda like a bar-b-cue flavor, you will love them, most canadians do. For your breakfast, get some canadian bacon. It's a staple up here, and if you are wondering what kind of bacon to get, it is called back bacon. You will love it. And I could not let you go without mentioning that you have to try Bannock (Indigenous) Bannock is a bread that was once a mainstay in the diets of Canada’s Indigenous people. It’s delicious and flexible. Baked and fried, varieties of Bannock are two modern variations which are crispy and fluffy on the inside. Bannock has been increasingly popular in recent years, with new twists and variations sprouting up in bakeries and cafes across the country. Enjoy and again, welcome to Canada! Safe travels!
One thing to clarify. Georgian Bay is cold at the time you were there but midsummer it’s warm enough to swim. I spent many summers as a kid swimming in Georgian Bay around Midland (Balm Beach) and Wasaga Beach. You’ll discover how much colder glacier fed lakes and rivers are when you visit Banff😊
This was so surreal to watch! We just went to Bruce Peninsula at the beginning of June and camped exactly where you were and took the same ferry all in our converted ambulance hahaha! So glad you enjoyed it, it's such a beautiful place! We just discovered your channel and will be following along your travels 😊 From fellow vanlifers!
Foods to try: Bannock, Nanaimo Bars, Saskatoon Berries, Caesars/ Clamato Juice, Montreal Smoked Meat, Have fun munching your way across a beautiful country!
The Grotto has a small hole in the rock to slide down thru to get into the cave. That's how i usually get down to it. Also, when you're at the beach..... If you swim around the right side there's a small cave that has a table top rock in the middle. The water is so cold even in August that when you're in there, you can see your breath inside. My top favourite spots in Ontario
A must for the bucket list is Hawkins Cheezies! Welcome to Canada! Enjoy! Honk and wave as you pass through Calgary but as others have said, keep going on to BC. Michael and Bonnie
No idea how I stumbled across your channel, but I did, and have watched a few videos. I'm glad I did stumble across you because I find your videos interesting, fun, and very relaxing after a high-stress day. Thank you guys for being you!! 😀
It's just important to say that you are only crossing about half of Canada. To the east you won't have visited Quebec, New Brunswick, PEI, Nova Scotia or Newfoundland and Labrador. Don't forget that you would have about 3000 km (say 2000 miles) to do to get to the Easternmost point of Canada from Niagara Falls.
I've long wanted to drive the Trans Canadian Highway. Canada 1. It goes from the Atlantic to the Pacific. It is EPIC. Especially the part which transverses the Canadian Rockies. !
Also a great van life and overlander community there. Think I watch at least 3 YT channels from that. Know Chrome and Emi each are traveling different route going north for the summer might try catching up with one of them and follow back down south to VC island if you'll be there into fall. They plus others have traveled all over Canada and probably have some suggestions of other places to go see.
I’m so hoping you can catch up with Chrome on van city van life. He seems like a wonderful, wonderful guy. I love watching the both of you guys on RU-vid. God bless both of you and your travels.
Hi Jimmy and Natalie! Welcome to Canada! If you're heading up highway 17 North passed Sault Ste Marie, there is a beautiful provincial park called Pancake Bay that might be a fun pits-stop to park Pancake at! Enjoy your Canadian adventures!
There is coniferous, which are basically evergreen that dont shed leaves in the fall,a lot of them also spread by cones. Deciduous trees are the ons that shed leaves in the fall and grow new in the spring.
Awesome video guys!! Canada looks amazing!! I’m in Michigan right now and will be crossing into Canada tomorrow!! I am so excited!! It’s so cool you went on a ferry!! I can’t wait to see it. My ferry ride yesterday was awesome!!
I've been to Flowerpot Island twice. I've always been amazed at how environmentally friendly services and all the solar powered amenities they have. Solar power oven, solar power freezer and solar power water heater. Volunteers live there and maintain the Island. I like their outhouse designs.
If you're going to Banff you should contact Matthew from VanLife Plus... we watch him all the time. He lives close to Banff and it's his favourite place!!
Hey guys new sub here. Really excited to see you guys hit one of my favorite places to camp and explore in the world. The BP. I feel bad you couldnt explore Flower Pot Island. The island is so cool and has such an ancient, primordial vibe. Concerning your tree comments. Deciduous trees are leafy trees yes and "evergreens" are conifers. The strange tree you were looking at was an eastern white cedar. They grow oddly up in that region because the soil is shallow and the roots have to expand in strange patterns to find soil and water in an area capped by limestone. Flowerpot has cedar trees that are up to 700 years old from I remember. Anyway welcome to Canada and enjoy the rest of your trip.
It makes me smile if Americans celebrate the drive to Canada as a new country, where most people also speak english. Here in Europe it is absolutly normal to cross other countries. When I travel to my home country I already crose 3 other countries, France, Belgie, Netherlands. Lots of German Camper fans spend their winter in Spain. In order to go there, you need to cross France. Or Italy, which makes you crossing Switzerland and or Austria. If you should ever be able to, maybe you rent a van over here in Europe and do some travelling here? There is so much to see.
Wild picked blueberries! Smarties (the Canadian, somewhat equivalent to M&M’s); fiddleheads (baby ferns) cooked and served as a vegetable, Pizza delight donairs YUM, and of course Tim Horton’s muffins and donuts! We still love all your videos and are following your Canadian travels!
Am Canadian. Ketchup chips were definitely something I loved more as a kid. These days I lean more towards the "wavy" plain chips (low salt) or cheddar jalepeno from Lay's (same brand you bought here). You should also try a Coffee Crisp chocolate bar! I grew up close to the American border, the chocolate here is much better than in the US.
Tobermory is stunning, As is visiting Oliphant ontario when the wind is nuking (you will see kiters enjoying the shallow bay and sandy bottom.....its a must visit!!! Calm days get your inflatable paddleboards out...its paradise!!!
Key point - Toronto is NOT the eastern end of Canada!!!!! Figuratively, it is the centre of Canada, although the rest of the country hates that. There is SO MUCH to explore east of TO.
My partner and I were just in Tobermory/BPNP last weekend! He has a family cottage in Lions Head. We love the area. If you are looking for another Canadian treat, look for butter tarts! Most groceries have them. We’re also big fans of Shreddies breakfast cereal.
Love your flexibility when plans must change. In Ontario you need to have some fresh walleyed pike! In Alberta I highly recommend the Kananaskis Loop that is near Canmore, between Calgary and Banff. It is beautiful, wild, and good camping. Lots of wildlife on and near the road. I am envious of your journey, but glad I get to share it vicariously.
Walleye and Pike are two different fish.Walleye is very good eating as they are in the Perch family.Pike are very slimey and boney and not the best eating.
Saskatoon berries, Canadian beef, buffalo burger, Nanaimo bars. Try chips from more than one company. Ketchup chips from Lays do not taste like those from Humpty Dumpty, etc. Try different sweets to see if you can notice any difference. In Canada we mostly sweeten with sugar from sugar cane (white sugar, brown sugar and molasses). Corn syrup is used in some commercial products; and of course their is always our great maple syrup (try the sugar, toffee and maple butter). A few typical sweets you might find are oatmeal and molasses cookies.
Hey! I lived on the Bruce for 11 years. The Grotto is beautiful, but it is very cold. The only time you can swim is in July or August, although September can be nice. When I say nice, I mean, maybe 70° Fahrenheit? That being said, I have seen some people swim in June... and believe it or not, clothing like jeans can help keep some body heat from disappearing even if wet. Once out, you need to change into dry duds very quickly. The earliest I've been in is our Victoria Day weekend in May - the weekend before your Memorial Day weekend. I am not too concerned about the spiders, but rattle snakes abound as well as a fair number of black bears.
How did I wind up watching a young American couple go to Tobermory? I've never even been to Tobermory... and I'm relatively close. ;p Stay a while Jimmy & Natalie. Maybe have kids and raise a family. We need people here in Canada. Bring your family.
Welcome to Canada & what a wonderful video! I'm going to that campground next weekend for my last camping trip of the year, so great timing, thank you 🇨🇦
Great video guys. Flowerpot island omg 😍. You asked about the food: probably too obvious but maple syrup. I heard that Saskatoon berry pie is really good. Enjoy your trip in Canada!
You MUST come to BC!! You’re missing out on a huge and very different part of the entire country. There’s nothing like the pacific coast, Vancouver, and Vancouver Island! Its a must see. I was going to recommend trying Nanaimo Bars, which are from Nanaimo, BC.
Hawkins cheezies, Eatmore chocolate bar, Oh Henry chocolate bar, SASKATOON berry pie!!! Ceasar (like a bloody Mary but with Clamato - can make it without alcohol too).
I really think you two should go as far as White Horse to see the Klondike gold rush history and dredges. Of course then you would be only a tank of petrol away from our most beautiful state of Alaska. There is nothing you can compare us to. July is a very nice month to visit. Visiting Alaska is a very Canadian thing to do. 😊🇨🇦
Did anyone tell you to sample various recipes for home-cooked butter tarts yet? They are uniquely Canadian and there are a couple places that specialize--even some big contest bake-offs. They resemble a tart version of pecan pie, is the best description I can give.
Please keep comparing places you visit. It gives me a better idea of what you’re looking at. For example if you see a place that looks like Caesar’s Head in SC I immediately have a clear picture. I maybe the only person that does this but it seems to help me. Thanks for the Canadian tour. Eh!
All dressed chips are better than ketchup chips, and still uniquely Canadian. Did you see any rattlesnakes? The Massassauga Rattlesnake is Ontario's only venomous snake and can be found on the Bruce Peninsula.
I'm not a fan but there is a quintessential Canadian treat called a Nanaimo Bar: coconut, chocolate, nuts, and custard. You'll have better luck finding an authentic version of that on your travels than Poutine. Also, if you have the opportunity to try Bannock don't pass it by. I love it hot with butter but some people like berry compote or molasses on it.
What i like about you guys is your not pretentious. You guys make me want to do the things you do and not feel jealous about the things you have. Although i do like some of the things you have you guys don’t seem smug about them like some other rv content creators are. Have fun and be safe.
I would have told you to skip the ketchup chips and try dill pickle. You should try Nanaimo squares and if you enjoy an adult beverage try a Caesar. Enjoy your trip across the west half of the country. If you have time, stop at Sleeping Giant PP.
Not sure if you have reached Winnipeg yet on your westward drive, but you may want to look into the train trip that goes from Winnipeg to Churchill. It would be a chance to possibly see beluga whales and polar bears. A little in the year, but worth enquiring if you have the time to divert there for a few days. 6:46
Hey sweeties, glad to see you enjoying Canada. Just letting you know, there are rattlesnakes there in parts of Canada...but I don't know which parts...if I already mentioned that before in another video, I apologise. Just wanted to make sure you're aware. Canada is so beautiful. I think its a lot like my home state, western washington only on steroids. Alaska too. Both places I'd love to spend some time in. I only briefly visited Canada and never been to Alaska. Enjoy!!! ♥️🍃🤗🍃♥️
For what it's worth, I live in Ontario and you're talking about the Massasauga rattlesnake. They are on the threatened/endangered list, and are pretty rare. I've never seen one or known anyone that's run into trouble from one. They're not aggressive and if you avoid them they'll avoid you.
All dressed chips are an other one u only get here in Canada If you ever find ur way to the east cost of Canada you have to try a do air Enjoy ur time in Canada We are happy to have you
