Van Life - Living in a Van With a Dog 

I’m a professional dog groomer in training, just thought I’d give a helpful tip. For double coated dog’s like huskies it’s important to brush out their hair at least once a day every day. It not only gets rid of the dead hair, it reduces the amount of fur that they shed. It also makes their coat shinier because of the oils released after brushing. Cody is gorgeous by the way:)

Such a good singer Cody! You have a breed known for wandering off. Try this, see if it makes a difference. get a length of rope and lengthen his leash so he can wander a little ways off. whenever he chooses to stay close, praise and give him something irresistible. Bacon like irresistible... Don't call him to you let it be his choice, you are rewarding his choice. You might notice over time, that becomes his predominant choice. You can also work on a reliable recall after you notice Cody is beginning to figure the game out. I'm a dog trainer seeking a moble life. Currently residing in a vintage class A Cabana with four dogs, a cat and a bird. I see a lot of people who have dogs living the moble life, and would love to help solve moble specific problems that would make life easier for them and their four legged companions.

Idk if you guys fixed the shedding problem, but there's a special brush made to eliminate the problem of shedding. It's called the "furminator" it gets rid of like 95% of the loose fur in their coat so your dog won't shed anywhere near as much. I use it on my German Shepard.

I have a husky cross I brought home to NZ from Canada. I get rolling tumbleweeds of fur every day! It's lovely to see another rescue story. They are worth the hard work; nothing is free in this life!

This was super helpful to me...wanting to embark on van life for years now but I have a big dummy who doesn't know how to act and was really unsure about leaving him in the van as a solo traveler.

At 9:43 when you are telling him to sing he starts saying no. Then he says "I don't want to". He's like, Oh, mom leave me alone. lol. He is so adorable. God bless you for taking him in and for loving him. As for the shedding, do you brush him daily? Have you ever tried shedding cloths? They come in a package like baby wipes, but they are reusable. You just wipe it over the dog and the hair clings to it., then you can rinse it out. I don't know how much they cost because I got mine from the dog shelter. Happy Trails!

You are doing your best coping with,the flying hair, the slobber, the dirty paws on the bed. Here is the main problem. how can you not love those eyes, the trust ,the funny tricks. He is part of the family. Good Luck

I am living in my SUV, and I have a husky named Cody too. And for sure, he’s not loyal.

Adorable! I have two border collies (mixes)...can relate to the fur. (But they heel and stay with us, typical collie mode) They travel in soft sided carriers, which are their beds, and contain the fur and dirt pretty well. Bungeed to the back of my minivan. The light weight carriers can be wiped down with a washcloth, shook out, and carried to our cabin tent or motel room. I keep the screen tops rolled, so dogs can pop their heads up for more air. Works for older dogs...puppies would probably chew through them. My collies love them. Happy trails.

Lol, I have done the Highway Fur Flush as well, haha! I have a dog who will not be off-leash much if ever. Your video is a good reminder that not every dog can run loose all the time, but they are still a great companion and worth it.

Please don't say Cody isn't a loyal dog. He is loyal, but it's the natural instinct of a Husky to run and chase. They can't help it. They were bred to work and that's where they thrive. The problem is, sometimes people choose a certain dog because it's cute without understanding the temperament of that breed. Here is a little more insight on Cody's behavior. Our dog, also husky, got away and had an encounter with a skunk. Nothing and I mean nothing gets rid of that smell. Even after a year if he got wet, the smell returned. Always have identification on them. Forest Rangers will call you to come retrieve your dog. Huskys are true wandering nomads! lol

HA! Vacuum tunnel effect is hilarious. :) Love his singing! Mine does too, but she tells me she's "Groot" more often than singing.

With proper nutrition, hydration and grooming you can cut down on his shading. Fish oil daily and a quick brush outside of your van every morning.

Great tips, although to avoid a few of the negatives get a poodle that doesn't shed and one that hates being wet or muddy. Stops the dirty van and wet dog smell too!

Love the pictures of Cody! Thanks for info. I eat & drink cat & dog hair all the time. Indoor dogs shed year around. I saw the van tour also. Great videos. Especially like the table that works as a bed board.

Love Cody! Great save, I have three rescued fur babies of my own. A friend who raises long haired purebreds told me about this awesome dog comb. if you don't have a FURminator dog comb, get one. They are pricey but well worth it. Can't believe how much hair can be removed even after brushing with a regular dog brush. I have two super furry dogs that shed perpetually just like Cody. Still have hair but some of it actually doesn't end up all over the place and in the air. It is truly amazing how much hair the FURminator removes. Sorry I sound like an advertisement.

Just gettin on here to see if theres any new stuff. Christmas eve and Christmas day i suffered 6 heart attacks. Got 3 stents put in, and now im doin much better. I can say this, these events have put me on much more of a direct path to my goal of living this life now. Gonna stop with the cigarettes after 28 years and start eatin much better. And get myself a van to start on. If nothing else, it can start off as a weekend/road trip van to have fun with. You guys keep up the good work on the videos! Ill be lookin for ideas.

We did not had the time to think as our dog Ziggy adopted us (literally he jumped in our van) while in Morocco last winter! And makes us happy every day!

I did a 2 month live out of SUV in Colorado. I realized I was a minority with a dog. Mine had just passed. Came back to Jax, and got puppy last year. Pitbulls are born to love, and a great security system.

You can make a sign stating your camper van is not like a typical van. It has vents and is insulated, keeping it from heating up like typical vans. Let them know there is water, air flow, and food for him. On the sign thank them for their concern for your furry family member. Print two and laminate them. On those days that opening vents and windows gets things comfortable enough for Cody you can place a sign in the front windows.

My dog Dakota looks just like Cody. I love huskies we had 2 and sadly lost our grace this past June. But I would have a dozen if I could afford it. They are truly family members. And yes they have to be on a leash. They like to wonder. He is sooo cute. If you are ever in west Tennessee get in touch we can let them have a play date. And we can visit. I will subscribe and keep up with you journey. We were just in Florida but not with our husky. Missed him so much. We need to do the van life so we can spend all our time with him. Love the song!! And both of my huskies eat chickens. So no more chickens. It's just a thing with them. My mom say you can't give a husky too much love. So love him and enjoy him!

I've been wondering about this van life with a dog thing. So how apt that I stumble onto your video? I'm buying the van in the next 3-4 months. Will just be part time for 3 years until I retire. I have a standard poodle. (1.) Poodles don't shed. They lose some hair, yes they have hair rather than fur, just like you or I, but it is minimal, and frequent brushing eliminates even that. (2.) Dangit! I never even thought about natl/state parks not allowing dogs. That throws a wrench in my plans. (3.) Did I miss it? Maybe the window breaking thing? (4.) Poodles are so attached to their people. Mine will wander no further than line of sight. If he can't see me, he heads right back. Now the Airedale my ex kept is like your husky. If he gets loose, he's gone. (5.) Poodles don't smell. It's just like taking a whiff of a person's hair, even wet. Now, the dog breath is a different story. But I have thought about all the outdoors he is liable to track into the van. I've been eying the Coachmen vans. They all seem to have carpet throughout, at least the stock ones. So, point taken, mod the flooring. Cody is such a beautiful animal. Every husky I've met is just an amazing looking animal. So close to the origin wolf. Thanks for the vid.

I'm in a similar situation, I have a husky, fur everyehere blowing through the truck. We have a shag dashboard, I can make pillows of dog fur lol but I plan on starting life in a van with my husky. I keep him shaved so minimal shedding and cleaner

I got a Husky an a van camper , you hav just gone over my biggest fears , wet an shedding dog . Thanx 4 tellin me what Im in 4 . These mutt R hard to train ( 2 close 2 the wolf ) but ya got to train em not 2 run away . Yep , they sure do throw sum heat , all is fine till ya wake up w/ dog butt in yr face . Much luk folks

That's totally the wrong breed for traveling/living in an RV. Huskeys are bred to pull and run. They are a very loyal breed. If you are having trouble with the hair, get a small vacuum. Someone told me that, and I resisted for a while, but finally did it and it works. Glad you rescued him. He has a really pretty face.

Dogs are not allowed on trails in most National Parks---Shenandoah in VA is a wonderful exception. That being the case,I`ve snuck my dog on many trails in National Parks. Usually you can get away with it. I keep him on leash so that he doesn`t bother other hikers or wildlife. Occasionally you get caught but I regard the fine as the price of a backcountry permit for my dog!

Cody is a gorgeous boy! Regarding the hair situation I've found that if you put on a latex glove will pick hair off surfaces easily. I got the tip from catmanchris channel and for me it worked like a dream. I live with two cats. and a dog.

I have a 1/2 pit and lab mix, I'm restoring a 1970 VW Bus to start living in. any recommendations on where to sleep with a pup during the day as I work a full time job at the post office? Always wanted to live in the van, and hopefully in a few years upgrade to a small school bus.

I think you need temperature meter stick on the window, so people can see that before they break your window ... oh leave the message or a sign that, people can see it ...

Put some cards on the windows, telling people that the van is properly ventilated and don't worry about the dog. And get an implanted chip for him.

Tape a note inside the window that says what he has....get a raincoat 4 him(dispossble booties if nead-be)....wipe his paws, wee-wee and tushy every time he comes in from a walk.....one final thing....dry shampoo [people shampoo wrks fine]😉

I have a wolf he sheds bad twice a year, a damp wash cloth will help pile up the hair. If some one broke my window I would beat their ass. Train as a service dog then he cannot be disallowed any where.

Huskys are independent and thats why we love them! (well some of us). We know they arent like most dogs and, personally that is why we love the breed so much. You want definite loyalty, security and a dog to be exactly what you want it to be?; get a German Shepard. You want want to see a dog form opinions..? You want to create a language with your dog? You want a dog to actually decide to stay with you because it wants to? (not because you tell it to).. Get a husky.
