😀 A BIT ABOUT US:
We’re Marianne & Chris, a happily married couple from the UK. Marianne is a living kidney donor to her best friend, and realising that life was for living and never really knowing what’s round the corner - we decided to fulfil our dream of travelling full time.
So in March 2018 after the kids had left home, we sold our belongings, rented our house and moved into our campervan called Trudy. We set off to see the world and after vanlifing around Ireland and Europe, we grabbed our backpacks and spent 5 months exploring Central America.
Feeling like we needed a challenge, we planned the ultimate van life adventure! In Jan 2020 set off to drive around the World from UK to UK. But after arriving in Turkey, covid caught up with us and closed the borders, so we had a wonderful 18 months exploring this special country. Realising we were not going to be able to head further East, we decided to do a handbrake turn and go the other way and shipped our van to the USA.
We hope you enjoy coming with us, and we’ll continue to share our real adventures and hope you feel inspire to step out of your comfort zone and try something new.

Totally unacceptable especially when you have paid for a service. So disappointed for you it must be devastating, things can be replaced but it's not the point . They must know who's job it was to check and sign off the van . The person who had access with the keys must take responsibility especially if your van hasn't been broken into . So very sad for you both .

Commenting from Canada. Most service stations have diesel, although it may be in a separate pump and you just have to move up another 6 - 7 feet or so. Someone in the comments mentioned Cracker Barrel as a place to park overnight. It’s also a great place to stop and have a bite to eat if you’re really hungry. A bit of an experience all on its own. I wish we had them in Canada. By the way, I’ve really enjoyed your Turkey series. You were really fortunate to be “stuck” in such an amazing country

I should add...I like the food at Cracker Barrel but the coffee, not so much! I have eaten at a number of different Cracker Barrel’s and I have yet to find one that can provide you with a decent cup of coffee...unless you like insipid coffee.

Totally unacceptable! Marianne & Chris you must get in contact with the shipping company!! At the end of the day it's there responsibility to make sure Trudy get there in one peace and everything should be as you left it! Take care of yourself!

Everything you’re mentioning stolen are things crew members on a ship would find useful. Grooming supplies, fans, clothing, shoes, etc. File a complaint with the shipping agent.

Yes I agree put in a complaint and a claim against the shipping company and/or agent, they are not allowed to take your stuff it’s theft, I would get legal advice to see if there are grounds for a private prosecution

Those crew that work on those ships spend months if not years at a time on them. Very little pay. I feel sorry for them but it's sad you got robbed.

As others have said I would definitely report this to the authorities. The offenders will be relying on people not bothering to report these things going missing, so will continue to get away with it. Looking forward to following your new adventures 😁

It’s happened to us as well and there’s precious little you can accomplish afterwards (we tried) everyone points the finger at each other - we got nowhere with our complaints etc - you realize it’s a dirty little secret of the industry.

Yeah, foreigners tend not to report it because of fear of maybe rocking the boat that may affect their visit. I agree, they should file a complaint. That's why it's important to film before and after and check the vehicle before leaving port.

It's so upsetting what has happened to you both. I hope the rest of your trip to America goes better. If you come to Tampa Florida you have a place to stay at our home. My wife and I can show you around Tampa. You can try a famous cuban sandwich or a deviled crab. If you like amusement parks we can take you to Busch Gardens. Have a great time traveling America ! It’s just wonderful knowing you’re here, great to hear your voices. I think back billing the shipping company is in order. A little low power security camera would be a great invention with an app like ring doorbells, so if anyone enters your van/home, it sends you their picture or video. Van lifers, start inventing! Yeah this is eerily familiar. I’m an expat Brit in Missouri and we imported some Austin Mini’s over and time and again, stuff was stolen from them while on the ship. The bizarre thing is there is NO RECOURSE whatsoever!! No one has a clue what to do about it so I remember telling them I’d like a job with them as it would be great to be able to just pilfer stuff and never get fired !!

So sorry your van got trashed. I've heard it's common when you ship. I saw some van-lifers do a very successful anti-theft thing to their van when they had it shipped (Snow & Curt). They actually had a temporary wooden wall built between their cab and the back and they put special locks on the slide and back doors and it worked. Yeah, those guys probably used your van as a hideaway when they wanted to take breaks on ship - feels yukky. So glad you were able to get her organized and on the road again though. I saw one couple got their promaster in a container for the trip by ship from Panama to Columbia. They had to take fan out and mirrors off, but got it in. Who was That? Anybody remember?

So glad Trudy made in one piece. When we shipped our van to Italy, we were robbed as well... 1 hub cap....kids cassette tapes, our air filters etc...very demoralizing.

I am so sorry you had to go through such a negative mess. Yet you both keep such a positive attitude! I am feeling your pain as I watch you drive around looking for propane. Tractor Supply and Uhaul didn't service on board tanks so I ended up at Campers Inn (much much smaller than Camper's World). I'm camping with full hook ups this week in my 25 foot Winnebago - luxurious compared to sweet little Trudy. But I have several boondocking (no hook up spots) I need to be ready for in the next few weeks. Chris really made me laugh . . . "look at the size of those caravans!! Look! Even the sides pop out." I'm dwarfed by my huge travel trailer and fifth wheel neighbors. Marianne would love the huge trucks they have to tow them with. Thank you so much for taking us along for your adventures. So sorry to hear this Chris & Marianne. So maybe next time make a full list of everything in & on Trudie & take photos of everything. Stick a copy of list or a notice inside Trudie stating you have a complete list & photos of everything. You could then go to customs for a "please explain" if anything on future is taken. If insurance was included in all the fees you paid you should be able to claim?? Trust you will carry on in your usual cheery positive way. Have a blast, live the USA, i lived there for 2 yrs & another time some road trips. God bless you and your travels.

Hi guys..on highways there is always rest areas where you can park over night..some have fastfood restaurants some are just plain parking..petro and loves gas stations are usually open 24 hours the do have showers it costs $10 they also have laundromats..I think they are $2 for wash $2 for dryer..walmart usually good spot to park if they are open 24 hours...another good place to park with no problems would be casinos..there is alot of them..but dont gamble...if you park anywhere else big chances police will knock on your window..national parks are good too but they close at sundown....there is also IHOP restaurant wich is open 24 hour good place to park..try to avoid downtown areas of most city's

There are few good apps in the USA to shop around for cheap fuel,, Also, Some gas stations would offer you cheaper fuel if you pay cash,, (Marked Clearly on the board O/S), this is widely known all around the USA

I Totally agree with Capt. Chris's comments. 100% it was the ships crew members. I worked with customs on the marine side and saw this many times while searching Ro-Ro ships. The crew wander below decks during the long crossing and have at it. Fans, clippers, floor mats and footwear =Crew members.

Wow thats pretty bad having stuff stolen by either Customs or Shipping....I assume everything was insured so stick in a claim and hopefully you get somewhere close to the value back. Good on the tracker company sending you one of their devices. Years ago I was victim of a roadside robbery in Spain and they took all my cash, bank cards, passport, and driving licence. The Spanish police were not interested and I had to get a friend wire me some money for fuel to get back to the UK.

@@TREADtheglobe Oh blimey i'm sorry to hear that.....BUT the upside being the bad PR they will get from the number of folks viewing this vid. And as you say "you are there now and getting on with it". Being robbed is a horrible experience and when I got back to UK I didn't want to talk about my robbery and totally withdrew. Of course my bank knew and I had to go and deal with them plus the passport office and DVLA.

Customs didn't do it I'd wager. It was the blokes who worked on the ship who robbed you afterwards. All those items missing..used on ships.

also, if the station has diesel you will see the price reflected on the sign. the diesel pumps are usually on the end caps and, as you have discovered, green.

So sorry for the theft of your things. It's like someone was staying in Trudy or something. There is free overnight parking in Walmart, cracker barrel, Bass Pro and Cabela's. Loves is and amazing truck stop and so is buc-ees . Looking forward to your take on the U.S.

Sorry to hear about the theft. I hope you can get recompence from the shipping co. let us know. In case you didn't know, a US gallon is less that a UK gallon - US liquid gallon (frequently called simply "gallon") is legally defined as 231 cubic inches, which is exactly 3.785411784 litres. UK gallon is about 4.55 litres to the gallon. Diesel is also about £1.72 per litre atm in UK

Your shipping was insured, wasn't it? It might seem like just small things but they do add up. I hope you've declared the theft to the company and as you replace things -- like the fans, magnets, shoes, etc. -- send in copies of the receipts. It's probably several hundreds of dollars.
