Van Morrison is a world treasure. Over 6 decades of singing song writing that's few have matched, Stevie Wonder is someone who comes to mind instantly. I recommend a deep dive into his music, it's going to take a while but it's really worth it, soooo many great songs

It's about life. We are the sailors on life's ocean. The foghorn is when our time is ended. He wants to live life joyfully and not fear death, which he sees as a natural flowing from life into the mystic.

I have always thought the same. Its about life, and the promise to live it fully and with vigor so that when that final fog horn blows you go knowing you did your utmost to live your life with every moment. And the metaphor of being a sailor is that life has ups and downs like the waves on a sea, and there are calms and storms, but know that all of it makes a life rich and full.

Van Morrison is an Irish Preacher, double meaning in his songs. The meaning of a man and a woman , and a Man and GOD . His songs are really deep. To the Soul. many songs are stories and others are prayers .

Kemi, Great reaction! This is about a sailor at sea thinking about returning to his lover, who is back on land. Normally a foghorn signals danger, but in this case it means he is close to home and his love. Of course all songs are open to interpretation. He's one of the great singer/songwriters. His "Brown Eyed Girl" and "Moondance" are favorites of mine.

some folks think the "mystic" refers to heaven or the unknown, whatever is beyond death. not fearing the end, and somehow keeping love in your heart. love hearing your thoughts afterward. keep on rockin

Soooo happy to see this reaction back up again! As I said when you first posted it, I have a very special feeling about this song. Every New Year's Eve, at 11:55 PM I play it, then play it again first thing after midnight, so it's the last and first thing I hear every year. To me it's about life, about the journey 'into the mystic.' Van Morrison is my favorite artist and I can't pick a favorite Van song, but this one is special.

The album that this song is from, "Moondance", is great from start to finish. Van Morrison is a great Rabbit Hole to get lost in.

This song is from the album "Moondance" which is an amazing album, start to finish. I was once driving from Ithaca, NY to my parents' home in northern NJ late at night, and somewhere in the no-man's land between Great Bend and Scranton, Pennsylvania, the radio station I had picked up played the first side of this (Moondance) album. It was truly an other-worldly experience. As soon as I got home, I bought the album and thus started my love of Van Morrison.

Great reaction. The last line: "Too late to stop now" became the title of his double-live album. Can you react to Caravan either from teh 1973 Too Late to Stop Now Tour or from "The Last Walz". Both show what a great performer he is.

One of Van Morrison's greatest songs. Only a couple of bands have produced worthy covers. I suggest you listen to Gretchin Wilson's version. It is almost as good as Van Morrison.
