My Father was President of OMNI Aviation Mangers a Aviation Insurance Co. based at Van Nuys in the 60's and 70's , we have shot landings into 16 R thousand's of times in everything from Champ's to Mustangs and I still get a kick out of it , we sponsored Clay Lacy in the 1970 Reno win as well as the California 1000 6th place finish in the DC-7 as well as Howie Keefe in Miss America in 71. Van Nuys was a thing to see for a 11 year old boy very into Aviation I still love that airport

Funny.. I fly 5199 Juliet. A real surprise hearing our tail number called out by ATC. 5199 J currently belongs to the 8-ball Flying club based in Van Nuys. It gets about fifty or more approaches a week.. So maybe not so surprising. Interesting that my home airport is special to people. Thanks for the vid.

While this video was focused more on the Van Nuys experience, I think this is a great video to learn about how quickly things can go wrong with ATC if you don't pay attention. Luckily even with the confusion, nothing went wrong here! I do think you should revisit this ATC footage on a newer video to talk about keeping your cool and making sure everybody is on the same page! Great video, as always!

Enjoyed the video, as an old phart, started flying in 1951 in the Civil Air Patrol, I have managed to collect over 25,000 hours, 13 Type Ratings, ATP, SEL&S and fly all over the world, most of the places I would not want to return to. Even today I get a thrill to hear and see the cockpit. I have spent lots of hours at KVNY and had it not been recorded in 2015 the Galaxy you followed might have been me as I retired from Net Jets from that aircraft. You two fellows have a very professional sound to listen to and great CRM. Not sure where you are on your career path but you will do well.

NO WAY! I'm doing my flight training out of KCMA (Camarillo) and talk to this controller (Mugu Approach) all the time! He's a good laugh when the traffic is light.

Van Nuys, I was there in December and the movie one six right is what inspired me to go there also. Great people at castle and cooke, kept the plane there for a weekend as we visited LA. Luckily it wasn't as busy for me as we arrived at about midnight local time and it was IMC (First actual IMC) Great way to end a 5.3 hour non-stop flight from KPVU to KVNY in a Diamond DA-40! May you have clear skies and tailwinds until next time.

Nice landing.. I learned to fly in Van Nuys back in 1992. It was different back then. Now the radio communication is quite challenging with all the traffic.

C5 has a landing roll of 3,600 ft. Takeoff is a tad over twice of that. It is a military transport and I believe is rugged enough to land in places far worse that Van Nuys. At least soviet counterparts are.

That was a great video! Makes me really miss my flying days. I used to fly around West Virginia and Kentucky. I now live about a few hours away from Van Nuys now and have been to that observation area to the left of 16R from the pilot's point of view. Safe Flying!!

Lol at the guy wanting to do pattern work in a clogged up airport thats the reason kchs says in the plates "no student touch and go activity is allowed" they started to do full stops on the runway when they called for T&G while a c-17 was making short final the airforce who owns the field put a stop to that after the instructor told em to piss off by doing it again Also good job on noticing 99j was in the pattern and he wasnt just screwing up your famous callsign

van nuys and most of the San Fernando valley is actually the city of Los Angeles. van nuys is a district of Los Angeles along with studio city,sherman Oaks, encino, tarzana. Has nothing to do with flying just bugs me when people think those are separate cities

This will sound a little retarded, but I got goose bumps when you were on short final. That's where I learned to fly. I have fond memories of 16R! And...you shouldn't scoff at people wanting to work the pattern at KVNY, it's good training and has served me well.

Can you explain in basic terms what happened that caused you to make the left turn and cancel clearance, and what followed afterwards? Was it the controller realizing there were two similar call signs, so to avoid confusion he sent you guys down the down wind and reset the pattern?

IMC is Instrument Metereological Conditions - it's the state of the weather around you (in other words you are in conditions where you have to fly by instruments). IFR is Instrument Flight Rules - a set of rules and procedures that relies on instruments rather than visual clues outside the cockpit (that would be Visual Flight Rules - VFR). So the difference is, one is the condition, the other the technique.

Dear Josh, I am a 14 year old Aviation Enthusiast and am in Flight Lessons and would like to start recording some of my flights. I would like to know What kind of equipment I could use to record the radio communication in a C152. I already have a GoPro and would like to see what kind of options I have.
