I like this setup. It has everything you need for off grid camping/living. I love the solar shower, the fridge, the water setup, the electrical setup, and the drawers. I think it's well planned out. I think you two are experts!
Hahahahahahaha the last part where Kyle is shocked that he's not a van building expert - day made! Thanks for the tour - can't wait to show you ours once it's done :)
Thank you so much!! Your video has been super helpful to my partner and I. We have the same van and are in Australia also so this was perfect insight thanks so much! We are about to start our build 😅 wish us luck!
Nice van , a question! I just bought a van similar to yours, are they the 28cm roof rack arms ? My brain is up to the kayak & surfboard part of my plan. Cheers James
Hey. awesome stuff! Love the hot water system you have for showers - where do you get that from? also curious where you found the clamps bits for the roof rack? much help appreciated! :)
Hey guys! I have this exact van but have struggled for ages trying to get roof racks that fit, what kind of place did you go to to make custom ones? Thanks heaps love your van
Love the build! I have the same model van I am currently converting to a camper. Did you guys have any trouble installing the exhaust fan on the roof considering it is more curved? I am worried about doing it and having leaking issues
Lovely job!😃🤙🏼I just picked up a 2004 Hiace Grand Cabin. Just wondering where you found the legs for your roof rack? Were they custom built as well? I can’t seem to find any tall enough to fit the high roof😭
Hi Ewan, yes they were custom made because we had trouble finding tall enough roof racks too! I have heard some people got tall racks from eBay somewhere though 🙂
I’m about to buy the exact same van 1987 I’ve been told as the van is very old it can be expensive and hard to find Parts to repair it? What has been your experience with this? Thanks alot
How do you guys go with the older model? Just about to buy a 2003 and wandering if it’s too old but then again old cars can be more reliable. Wandering what you guys think :) amazing build btw!
Very impressive quality all round. Looks like a solid van and you've really done everything you could have. Must have taken a lot of time. Were you both working when you were building? I've been working on mine roughly every 2nd weekend for the last few months and some nights and I've done what seems like almost nothing!
Thank you! We put a lot of thought into making it work for us 😊 We were both working full time, and Kyle was working away for 2 weeks at a time and had a week break to work on it each swing. It may look like it came together easily but it takes a lot of hard work, so I know what you mean about feeling you aren't getting anywhere! But taking your time with it will be worth it when you have a quality build in the end! Good luck and enjoy the process 😊
reallly sweet! how much roughly was all of this because after yr 12 im thinking of travelling round aus in a van but the budget is what im a tad concerned about?
Hey Alisha, we didn't really track it but I'd say around $15k go convert the van on top of the cost of the van itself. You can do it a lot cheaper, and a lot more expensive though, just depends what you want to include ☺️
Hey mate sweet build, just a few questions: How capable is it offroad/on the beach, especially on soft sand how tall is the roof and are you able to stand comfotably?
Hey, thank you! We have taken him down a few sketchy tracks and it's been all good so far (although we try not to push it too far), as to beaches we stick to very hard sand where we know other 2wd cars can handle it. I can almost stand up straight and I'm 164cm tall 😄
Shannon thanks for the tour. Lovely van. I see where you said you can almost stand up straight - how almost is that? Do you reckon i could stand right up at 160cm?
Great build guys. I have a similar hiace and would like to ask a couple of questions. How do you tilt back the passenger seat to access the engine bay? Do you have to move the cupboard out of the way. And also, how do you seal off the gas cylinder? Is it in an isolated box? Thanks in advance for any help.
Thank you! The passenger seat still tilts back as it would usually, there is enough room behind them and the kitchen cabinets don't block access to the engine at all 😊 The gas is sealed in a box we made which serves as one of our "dining table seats" we just unhook it and turn it off at night. you can see what I mean by this in our van build video at around 4:34 (it doesn't show it completely finished at sealed off, but you get the idea)
