In this installment of VanLife, I remove my leaking rear heater core… the lazy way…, along with troubleshooting the Vanagon radiator fan that. Just. Wont. Work. Oh and finally replacing the Vanagon’s Rear Sliding Door Handle. Moving this Van closer to road worthy one Saturday at a time. Join me!?

I feel your pain, anything to do with swapping coolant fittings on the Vanagon is a mess. Lots of clamping pliers and a big drip tray from Home Depot to help contain the mess.

Agreed! At this point I’m just living with the residue on the floor until I get it completely finished. Then I’ll empty everything out and powerwash it clean again. But then again, that could be months 😬

I like the lift you have! Is that a Bendpack? No real easy way to get that heater core and those T junctions out without loosing some coolant. One thing that helps is plastic hose clamp pliers, as I've found vice grips don't completely block off the coolant flow. As far as the radiator not coming on it sounds like there's a temperature sensor that's not working.

It’s the QuickJacks from Costco. Love them. They make it so easy. I haven’t used jackstands in over a year I think. I’m hoping it’s the continual loss of pressure from fixing a leak and then finding the next leak in line. (Currently have additional hoses on order because fixing this rear heater core issue woke up a whole new issue!) otherwise I’ve replaced the thermostat, fan temp switch, resistor and both relays.
