Haha.....I was there around the same time in the dry season. Namsong (?) River basically not moving at all. High as a kite on 'shrooms, flopped out stationary on some tire tube for what may have been hours in what was essentially a giant puddle of green algae, sewer runoff and buffalo diarrhea...before I finally became coherent enough to think "Perhaps I should start paddling?" I'm an old turd now, so will probably never do that type of thing again, but fun (and disgusting) memories nonetheless.

I went there in 1999, 2011 and then again last year (2023). It's sad to see how rapidly the place is going backwards. Grubby, trash everywhere, rampant development with zero concern for the environment, some of the scabbiest tourists to (dis)grace SE Asia. Among the crappiest air quality in the world for 2 or 3 months of the year - you can already see it in this vid of Ed's. It will get even worse between now and May. I won't return....with the new high speed train, it is very easy to skip the place altogether now - just head straight on to Luang Prabang.

Correct it's a shithole getting worse everyday, and it looks very smoky, maybe it's burn season in that DUMP
