Howdy all! I have a completely different instrument review today for you, one that I'm sure most of you weren't expecting... And yes, it has 5 strings, but it's not a bass guitar. In fact, these particular 5 stringers are so much fun to play, I had to demo 2 of them for you today!

As a picker myself...I think you have acomplished one of the BEST Resonated to Open Back examples of sound difference. Bravo.

Hey Dave, you made me laugh and brought back some old memories with that tune you played, for that I'm very thankful on this Thanksgiving Day. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours Dave...

Steve O! I appreciate ya my friend! And I’m thankful you were able to revisit some old memories with my pickin’. I’m guessing the tune was the theme from the Beverly Hillbillies? 🤔😃

Funny but the open back sounds louder. Amazing I didn't even get a truss rod wrench with my new Yamaha acoustic but Vangos, can manage to provide them. They are cheap banjos and notably not as good sounding as more expensive but ... For a beginner to practice and see if they are still interested after six months it's not a bad idea. So many instruments end up unused in closets, the used market is flooded with them . When it comes to practicing I highly recommend a banjo mute as a necessary purchase and if in a apt, go sit in your car or risk eviction. .

Well... Yee Haaaaawwww... You never fail to amaze me, Dave. I'm really surprised how much better the open backed one sounds to my ear. Clearer and more traditional. Btw, buried in my music room is what I call a Banjette. It's a banjo (with back) that's strung like a guitar. I bought it from a catalog during the 60s. Either a Sears or Blue Chip Stamps catalog. Never could play much on it and the string arrangement took away from it sounding like a real banjo. Shame I can't dig it out and share a photo here.

Hey dude… yes I’ve seen the 6 string guitar/banjos. Didn’t realize they’d been making them that far back. Lol. I guess the technique of posting one vs a 5 string banjo would ultimately make it sound more like a guitar w banjo tone. Also I agree I think I prefer the open back tone too. 🤘🏻

Wow Dave! All you were missing was the banjo, I bet you'll be able to get some rock out of there too 😉. However I prefer the less ringing sound of the second one.

Hey yea, I will undoubtedly find a way to rock out the banjo… so yes! The maple open back was quite nice ☝🏻

Having a case makes the banjo sound so much better? It’s the case that matters, not the instrument or the musician.

You get a case w your banjo. You also get lots of extra accessories. Would you rather just get the instrument?

Lol. I made my own banjo mute with 2 clothes pins. Plus I wear headphones too when I practice cuz the banjo is the perfect frequency to make my ears ring 🫨 I actually love this maple open back. Wish the action was a little lower. I might work on it

@@DaveRucci Enjoy, been thinking about a open back parts caster but even scrounging parts is as expensive as buying anymore. Want a double cut headstock neck for my version that has a heel able to mount to the open back rim, use antiqued hardware (chemical for that) ,and make a block rim myself . Its obvious once you start adding up new parts or even scrounging online for used the industry has it down to a science in pricing so you just buy new. That works for those who don't like to get hands on. I've made various things over many years including a exact copy of Justin Johnson's shovel 3 string guitar and that was the only case that making something was cheaper and I used the same pickup and tunners. I'm a old fart and did const for years, the steel those garden spade shovels are made of is hel, on expensive bits. snapped two and burned up all three even with cutting oil. Keep oniclin.
