Vanguard Dispatch (2005) 

From 2005, this was the first entry into the "Tales from Alpha Quadrant" series of stories that never quite got past the development stage.
Backstory: I was part of a team that had been hired to transfer a memoir (basically retype into the computer). The book was an autobiography of a man who'd served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Stationed in the South Pacific, he alternated chapters between what was going on in the war with the letters he was writing to his family and friends back home, and I was struck with the stark contrast.
It got me thinking: what would it look like if the crew of a ship behind enemy lines were recording letters to send home?
It was especially challenging for the actors, who had to do everything in a single take.
The opening fly-through was inspired by a performance of "Ave Maria" by the St. Joseph, MO chapter of the American BarberBoys. As they were performing the song, I suddenly saw the opening title sequence of "Superman" -- flying through space juxtaposed with a choral piece. I knew what my opening sequence would look like, and this film presented the opportunity to test that concept.
This was also the first use of the logo and laugh.
