"The Problem with Vanity Fair's 'Expert' History Series: A Critical Review"
Description:
In this in-depth review, we take a critical look at Vanity Fair's RU-vid channel, focusing on their popular series featuring "experts" discussing historical topics. While promising to deliver insightful historical commentary, we explore how these segments often veer into territory that raises questions about objectivity and intent.
We'll analyze:
The blurred lines between historical analysis and political commentary
Specific examples of how current political agendas seep into discussions of past events
The qualifications of the "experts" featured and whether they provide balanced perspectives
The potential impact of this approach on viewers' understanding of history
This video isn't just a critique - it's a call for more responsible content creation when it comes to historical topics. We'll discuss the importance of separating fact from opinion, and why viewers deserve clear distinctions between historical analysis and contemporary political messaging.
Whether you're a history buff, a media critic, or just someone interested in how information is presented online, this review offers food for thought on the responsibilities of major media outlets in the digital age.
Join the conversation:
What's your take on Vanity Fair's approach to historical content?
Have you noticed similar trends in other channels or media outlets?
How do you think channels should balance engaging content with historical accuracy?
Masking political propaganda as historical analysis is fundamentally deceptive and harmful for several reasons:
Distortion of facts: It skews historical events to fit a modern political narrative, often oversimplifying complex situations or ignoring crucial context.
Misrepresentation of the past: It projects current ideologies onto historical figures and events, potentially misrepresenting their true motives, beliefs, and actions.
Erosion of critical thinking: By blending fact with political opinion, it can confuse viewers and make it harder to distinguish between objective historical information and subjective interpretation.
Manipulation of public opinion: Using the credibility of historical analysis to push a political agenda can unfairly sway viewers' perspectives on current issues.
Undermining of genuine historical scholarship: It diminishes the work of legitimate historians who strive for objectivity and comprehensive understanding of past events.
Creation of echo chambers: When history is tailored to support specific political views, it can reinforce existing biases and prevent exposure to diverse perspectives.
Hindrance of informed debate: Basing current political arguments on distorted historical narratives can lead to flawed policy decisions and unproductive public discourse.
Loss of nuance: Complex historical events are often reduced to simplistic narratives that align with current political goals, losing valuable nuance and depth.
Potential for increased polarization: When different groups base their worldviews on conflicting versions of history, it can exacerbate societal divisions.
Disservice to viewers: Audiences seeking genuine historical knowledge are instead served a political agenda, potentially leaving them misinformed or misled.
Share your thoughts in the comments, and don't forget to like and subscribe for more media analysis and critical reviews!

Metatron....who do you think one calls when you have forgotten the combination to your safe? Who does one call when one needs to get into a safe if they don't have the combination/key? You know it can be the son who inherited his father's mansion and in it there's a safe.... You didn't paint yourself in a particularly bright light with that hilariously ignorant take of yours, Mr Metatron, sir.

@@ShadowWolf1307 English Gothic Literature is NOT Eastern European Folklore. 18th and 19th century English Gothic Literature and the Gothic Revival is fascinating but it is very much a Protestant outsider's view of Catholic and Orthodox Europe and very much an Enlightenment and Romanic Era and Western European view of Eastern Europe. The study of folklore, legends and mythology is not the study of literature; when Charles Perrault or the Grimm Brothers made told tales literary, they changed, systematised and often sanitised them. Little Red Riding Hood saving herself by saying she needed to "go outside" (to empty bladder or bowels) is very different from her being eaten (Perrault) or saved by a huntsman (Grimm).

If you have a problem with that you should take it up with vanity fair for only using modern examples (which they did BC they wanted to make a video about films. He does a lot of good work with kids and former inmates, and the tiny bit of him you featured wasn't any accurate representation of what he did/does. He reveals his secrets so others can recognize when crime may be afoot. He never just walked in and put a gun to anyone's face, per se. If you don't do your own editing, it was very deceptive editing.

I agree that the rant about interviewing a former criminal was unwarranted. Nobody is going to see an ex-robber (one who went to prison no less) talk about robberies and go "hmm, I was going to be an honorable citizen but now I'm gonna be a criminal!". And he also presumed the guy murdered people in the places he robbed but the guy only got a 12 year sentence so I presume he never hurt people or it would've been longer
@iota-09
@iota-09 3 месяца назад
@@exantiuse497 indeed, normally i agree with metatron as he does have the right ideas, but his approach is... debatable at best, and it's seen in how he lets his own prejudice come before his own logic. "former criminal" means they served a sentence, now, putting in the goodwill of understanding that prison is to REFORM a person, not simply to punish, i would expect from him the mental maturity to understand that just because someone did crimes before they automatically aren't (currently, understandably formerly may have been) evil minded people. obviously there's always the very likely chance that the system fails and that the criminal didn't learn, but i think in this guy's case we can tell that at the very least he's trying and that there could be plenty of reasons to have criminals share their knowledge, street smarts are still smarts and valuable knowledge, just because someone may have used/may use that knowledge nefariously does not mean it can't be used to help good-willed people protect themselves or others, in fact, i'd say that's actually far more likely. i'm honestly a bit disappointed in him lately... i hope he gets his had straight on, because he's let subhumans of the web take far too much space in his mind, driving him to questionable ways in his approach to "uncovering the truth"...

A lot of people were invited in because someone knew someone who knew them, and gave me their number to call, or I brought in people from the university nearby. Sometimes we got great speakers who were engaging and fun, and other times, dry academic lectures. But we only had a couple incidents where we got someone who was a real crackpot. Exactly. Sexuality in classic vampire stories is very prominent. Not in the sense of some Freudian criticism that looks for phallic symbols in every carrot and cucumber - it's as in-you-face as the contemporary sense of decency allowed. Regarding the jewel thief, I suppose people want to consume that kind of content. There's this criminal in my homeland who became a celebrity and influencer. He was imprisoned multiple times for various petty thefts and armed robberies and then imprisoned for life for a double homicide as a hitman. He escaped from prison multiple times, eventually became rumoured in media to be innocent, got a presidential pardon after 20 years (it's a tradition here that a new president pardons a couple of cons where there are doubts of guilt or if their health situation worsens). He was actually suggested for a pardon after every presidential election since his life sentence. He wasn't in any way sick, just old (almost 60) but we can guess he charmed the First Lady when she came to chat with him in prison. After his release he became a national celebrity among the, let's say, less inteligent populace.

Profesional safecrackers are hired to test security of new safes and prevent weaknesses that can be easily exploited by criminals. If you are one of the lucky people who have any reason to have safe at home, when you buying one, you will see that the good expensive safes have written what time it is needed to be open. They are like door, you cannot have fully protected door, but you want to make it harder for criminals to the point where the time required is not worthy for them to risk it. They do and another important thing. For example your rich grandpa dies and nobody knows the password for his safe, so you call the guys to open it for you.
@Djnc17

Companies actually hire people who specialize in breaking into safes to test their security and find flaws. It's like when companies will hire hackers to test their systems. There are security conferences that host people who work with networks/computers and physical security. They hold competitions to penetrate systems for fun. There are also groups that pick locks for fun (locksport). Locksmiths learn how to crack safes and pick locks to get into buildings and cars in cases of lockouts. Normally these aren't talents that are advertised, since they can raise eyebrows. But, yes, there are pros who crack safes and bypass other physical security measures.

They do have a history of hiring former criminals in their react series. I stopped watching that series bc even those episodes became more about pitching the former criminals new business in crime prevention. The one in specific that ended it for me was a jewel thief was going on about how he could easily have done the job being shown, but no one would bc it would be impossible to fence. I had just come from a video about the biggest art theft in history where they would end up catching two of the thieves and paintings, but most of the art and the two other thieves were never found. Jewels and gold can be completely and permanently altered, paintings can not, and dudes telling me you can't move stolen gems and metals? They've had forgers on discussing why you might see older, lower value jewelry stolen - it's to forge it into very valuable missing pieces from the same period. And that's just to sell it back to the same museum system it was originally stolen from for 100x the initial value of the pieces. To a separate entity, like a collector, it would have more value and be easier to move. And, specifically, Saudi princes are KNOWN to dump tens of billions into both legitimately and illegitimately acquired pieces all the time. There was definitely a shift in their content at some point where it all became political. In the case of thefts specifically, they had to make it sound like the modern establishment suddenly became infallible - and that is in no small part due to their experts help. Some of their older experts would tell you how they'd have done it in their day, then explain what changed that allowed them to be caught and how that "could" still be possible today. Especially in terms of things like the mob, it eventually took the US government allowing something that should be unconstitutional to catch the criminals. That's why when you hear about old school mobsters, they were caught for something minor like tax evasion and had the entire book thrown at them. Today, they're "arrested," locked, all of their property gone through dozens of times looking for any wrong-doing before finally being charged. Without RICO, the government would not be able to catch anyone from modern organized crime for anything. One of Vanity Fair's "experts" is someone that was detained under RICO for weeks before they ever started charging him with anything. Meaning our government suspends habeas corpus routinely for certain individuals, but yet we tell people that was only ever done under Lincoln and W. Bush temporarily and to what we would consider terrorists.
