Vanity Fare - Early in the Morning/Hitchin' a Ride

The full performance from "The Engelbert Humperdinck Show," which includes the titular host dueting on the latter song (3:25). Those who've watched the other version on RU-vid might notice that the opening shot was re-edited to obscure Mr. Humperdinck.

Vanity Fare's first hit was a UK #20 cover of The Sunrays' (friends of Beach Boy Carl Wilson) song "I Live For The Sun" (only a US #51). Next "Early In The Morning" (US #12, AC #4, and UK #8) and "Hitchin' A Ride" (US #5, AC #22, UK #16) were both million-selling singles. I suppose this makes them "TWO-hit wonders" LOL with "Early" being the bigger hit internationally. For a pop group in 1969-1970 they would have normally lip synced their song on most TV shows, or at least sung "live-to-track" (sing to the instrumental mix). These guys are playing both songs LIVE. They clearly have the songs down because they sound very close to their records. TV shows also use an overhead microphone boom, so the band members don't necessarily need their own mics. Engelbert (aka: Arnold George Dorsey) is an iconic adult contemporary, pop, and Las Vegas performer from the UK once managed by Tom Jones' manager. Mr. Humperdinck became famous with "Release Me" in 1967 and has too many other hits to name here. His last big hit was the Grammy-nominated smash "After The Lovin'" in 1977 (US & Canada AC #1, US pop #8, NZ #1, AUS #13, and curiously, #40 US Country. Even more curious, this was not a hit in his home country of Britain. He career was way more successful than Vanity Fare. Hope this informs some folks.

Their best song was I Remember Summer Mornings. Early in The morning was just a succession of Baroque falling sequences!

Thanks for explaing this, because here in America, 'Hitchin' a Ride" was indeed the bigger hit. This show, unfortunately, was something of a ripoff of "This is Tom Jones", esp since both Tom Jones and Engelbert Humperdinck were similar singers and had the same manager!!

All I can tell you is in 1971, I turned 14 and was finally allowed to ride my bike off our block. I had ordered this song from a Thrifty drug store some 10 miles away in a chancy city. I rode the distance-at some points scared out of my wits-but got the record for a dollar .10cents. So, the round trip was 20 miles. That city is now a cesspool, and the Thrifty is long gone. But this memory remains with me forever. I never even knew what the guys looked like, but I adored this song. I am so glad they are still alive and even tour here and there. Thanks for sharin' this video, Vinnie!

I heretofore hadn't realized what a great singer Englebert Humperdinck is/was. You assumed that with an unusual name like that, he couldn't be any good. Cat could bring it. What a tough song! Muy Bien.

@@rustysmith5809 I was really only familiar with him from the covers in my grandmother's record collection, but he had a bunch of cool celebrities on his show. He has a nice voice, but it wasn't right for Hitchin' a Ride (and I doubt he ever hitched a ride in his life!).

The irony is that the “cool” band is wearing what looks like matching cheerleaders’ uniforms, while you could wear that tux out tonight. Goes to show how much different a few years made in the 60s: Englebert was 5-10 years older but that was ancient history in those days.

Why did Engelbert just stand there like that after introducing them? It seemed very awkward as if they were witing for him to move the hell out of the way. Bizarre.
