We've been full-time #vandwellers since 2018. Meet Shakira the van (her hips don't lie).
This is a quick overview of how we converted a 2018 Nissan NV2500 SL - High Top.
We thought we timed it right. The apartment lease was almost over and we expected to move into a completed van within 2 months of picking up the keys from the dealership. That was not the case at all. We had a bed and a spray bottle as a "sink" for months until our time and budget could permit continuing the build. While working full-time we'd build out the van in the evenings/weekends.
Didn't have a garage so worked out of parking lots and local parks. Feel free to ask questions about how we built this or that... Thanks for stopping by!
Throughout our travels, strangers would ask if they could take a peek inside the van. To which we replied - sure and after the tour we'll drive to your place to peek inside your home if that's ok (even though we don't even know your name). Kidding.
Of course, we understand the "cool" factor of a tiny home on wheels. Under the right circumstances we're thrilled to show off all the hard work we've put into the van.
Not to mention the extra high-fives us female van dwellers tend to get when folks find out we put our big-girl pants on and built it out all by ourselves. #diyvancoversion #womenwhobuild
It's just that these tour requests typically occur, for example, while in the middle of repairing the sink in 100 degree weather. Tucked out of the way in a far corner of a home depot parking lot. Giving off all the vibes that we are clearly not company-ready.
Well, this video allows us to politely say it's not a good time but you can still take a peek at the van via RU-vid or IG.

two questions. first question, you're honest answer regarding city at PG and freeway MPG. second question, does the charcoal really absorb interior condensation?

Yes, we hacked and DIY'd to spend as little as possible. We worked full-time while living in the van and built it out in random parking lots on weekends. If we can do it, you can do it!

Love your set up and hacks! We have this exact van as our old work van and I want to do a similar set up for our family of 4 (two Murphy beds or hammocks) above the dinette/ queen size bed. However, I also need to put in two more van seats or a bench seat for the children to legally ride... think there will be enough space? I was thinking of putting it behind the passenger seat

Thank you- that means so much! I think you could squeeze in the extra seats if you're not planning on a kitchen/bathroom area. I've been meaning to research how I can make our bench mode legal for a passenger or 2. Aside from adding seatbelts I'm not sure what's required in my state or elsewhere for that matter... since we're mostly elsewhere haha. Excited to see how it all pans out!

Awesome! What did you use for insulation? Do you have a heat source in there? I’m really thinking hard on these Nissan NV vans. Thanks so much for the great video.

Hi John! We stuffed the walls and ceiling with Black Mountain sheep wool for insulation. Didn't add any below the subfloor. No additional heat or a/c source other than the stock van system. For reference, it's the middle of the night at 42° outside and 64° inside the van. The temperature difference will vary based on things like how long ago I parked/turned off the ignition, or if the sun is beating down on the van. Less windows help too. No regrets getting the NV2500. Unfortunately, I read Nissan will be discontinuing the model soon. Feel free to reach out with more questions. Take care!

@@livinonaventure I’m searching for some envies but maybe I’m gonna have to find a tall van. Another question for you if you don’t mind. Do you think there’s a solution for storing more water on board with even a portable shower kit where you can get a shower or two a week? Something that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg.

Do you have a 2nd battery that is charge when the car is running? How did you install it?

Yes, separate from the Inergy Kodiak we have a deep cycle AGM battery connected to an inverter and a smart battery charger/maintainer. We plug that into the van when the car is running. Let me see if I can find the photos and video of the setup and I'll upload it on this channel for a visual reference.

I enjoyed your tour. I am looking at videos with the bed longways instead of the back and I found it with yours. I am a single person and I don't need both sides of the bed to stretch across the entire van. I want to be able to walk through the van. I'm working on mine now and getting ideas from others. I days away from buying a NV2500 2018 I saw on the lot. I'm 5'5 and concerned about the width of the van for the bed. How tall are you all? What size is your bed and did you place it in vertically or horizontally? I am so nervous. I may need to back out.

We're both 5'2 and we juuuust fit across the van. That's with wool insulation + 1x4 furring strips + the thin decorative wood panels you see on both sides of the mattress. The foam mattress was a queen before we cut off the end to fit the width of the van, horizontally. We use the leftover mattress as the backrest you see in this video (stapled faux leather fabric with scrap wood for structure). Nerves are common before such a grand purchase but just trust your heart 😉. @@TrustNotMyHeart I love this van! The maintenance is affordable. It has the longest warranty of any cargo van at 5 yrs (at least when we got it in 2018). It has the same platform as the Nissan Titan pickup truck. It's a smooth ride - as much as a cargo van can be.. If it's a good deal then go for it! You'll figure it out and make the layout work for you either way. Now I'm invested. @@livinonaventure I just happen to come back and just check on y’all were doing and remember those good vibes from when I first watched. I got the 2018 Nissan NV and it has been amazing. It’s everything I needed. The driving position is a great, I LOVE truck front for added protection and it helps with some of driving anxiety not being able to see off cliffs bc the hood was so big. Now I don’t even have anxiety lol. I love the narrownesses. It allows me to get into spaces and be more compact. Like you said the warranty and the non issues with the vehicle have been great. By God’s grace I made it from the west coast to the top top of Maine and am now headed down the eastern seaboard. Your van really inspired me and gave me the courage to forge on. Thank you!

Hi Beverly, thanks for reaching out! Apologies for the delay. I jigsawed a piece of plexiglass to fit snugly between two bathtub splashguards. Then sealed/adhered those components with a clear tub & tile caulk. However, the clear caulk stained easily from food residue. Recently I removed the clear caulk and resealed it with a grey gasket maker (Permatex "The Right Stuff").
