Nigel is a legend. Part of the problem with football is that every 50-50 decision you have 5-6players from each side screaming at the referee. Bring in the rule from rugby where only the captain can speak to the ref,...then why else is he wearing the armband...they don't do anyhting else.

What's stopping football in implementing a challenge system in VAR? I absolutely agree that VAR is overused. Every goal is NOT supposed to go under a microscope. That sucks the joy in football. The explosion of ecstacy when the ball bulges the net is GONE! I'll have 1 VAR challenge for each team per game. You use it, you lose it, regardless of the final decision. So maximum of 2 VAR checks per game. If all VAR checks has been used, we go old school. If there's an marginal offside during the goal at the 90th minute and all VAR checks has been used, live with it.

The problem is not with VAR as a technology, but HOW that technology is being used and the rules around it. As Nigel Owens said, rugby isn't perfect, but that fact that everyone understands WHY a referee gave a decision definitely helps a lot, regardless if they agree with it. It also helps that referees in rugby tend to be far more respected than those in football. I think what needs to happen is the referee needs to communicate more/better with the linesman (like they do rugby) because one man cannot hope to see everything. Also, the referee should be the one to check with VAR if they feel there is a need (ie, was someone offside, was there an incident in the box that should be a penalty etc). Once these very specific rules are set, then the use of the technology will become better and smoother.

Mic'd refs (and VAR room) to have trail of accountability. VAR room is given a maximum of 30 seconds to judge on any incident. Can't make a call in that time then it's not "clear and obvious". This even applies to offsides. Any ambiguity on offisides must benefit the attacking team.

Also. IMO, the ridiculous shoulder or finger tip in position rule has to go. Only foot in position of being behind defenders should decide offside or not. Also having to have two defenders behind goalkeeper for a goal to be legit is ridiculous.
@senzokai3156
@senzokai3156 2 года назад
You'd be surprised how likely it is, at times, for the referee to take time because he's looking for a solid enough reason to move from the decision he took; and not because it's the right decision. This is where the subjective way referees look at incidents becomes a problem. The more people talk about 'it wasn't clear and obvious', the more you're going to have these issues. Make matters more binary. It's the only way you'll get consistency because ambiguity is a slippery slope.

Its common to hear a rugby referee ask the VAR\TMO "Is there any obvious reason I cannot stick with onfield decision and award the try?". In football most VAR reviews are based around a question of "Any reason I cannot award the goal?". Onfield decisions count for nothing. Less goals means less enjoyment, less emotion and this has ruined the game overall imo.
@trtvitor1385
@trtvitor1385 2 года назад
Rugby is the same, if there’s a reason not to award a try, they don’t. Whether the ball has been passed forwards in the build up, player involved is offside, or the ball is dropped and not placed over the line. Rugby just does it far more effectively. It’s fundamentally the same principle.
@declanokeeffe84
@declanokeeffe84 2 года назад
@@trtvitor1385 Incorrect, if there is a clear and obvious reason not to award a goal or a try then Rugby and Football are the same. However, in Football If there is a subjective call in a non clear and obvious incident then the VAR official makes that call and the referee generally agrees with him. In rugby, non clear and obvious decisions will always result in the onfield decision being kept, American Football the same. There seems to be no such thing as an onfield decision in Football and "Clear and Obvious" seems to have gone out the window also. High scoring games like Rugby and American Football benefitted from VAR but Football has lost its soul since it was introduced.
@trtvitor1385

I'm glad Nigel talks about the overuse of the Video Ref. I remember one game where the ref checked the VR for almost all the tries to see they were good. I get they don't want the backlash if they get a decision wrong. But by the time a ref gets to officiate a 6 Nations or World Cup match, they SHOULD have enough experience by that point.
@joerussell5892
@joerussell5892 2 года назад
Nigel said about pressure in a game, it doesn’t help when there are 6 players surrounding a referee! It’s sometimes really immature from players doing that! It means that the conversation between captain and referee is straight forward and easy to understand for the officials and the players! You saw Kieran Trippier doing that telling one of his players to go away while he was talking to ref! It just makes it much easier!

It will get better if He brings a more transparent form of refereeing the way they do it here in America. PRO has the Inside Video Review channel where each week after the slate of games. They release the conversation between Referee and VAR on all VAR decision. If Prem and European Soccer would have a level of confidence in calls on the field that we are required as referee's to have in America they would already have this. I haven't refereed at the highest level yet but in my opinion as a progressing referee and fan of MLS this level of transparence helps minimize the backlash on certain call.

The way the rugby officials communicate and allow for spectators to listen in does allow for some transparency, but there should also be a strict time limit (with CLEAR evidence) on video checks to overturn the original onfield decision.

Think VAR should primarily be used for on/offside decisions where it can use its accuracy to be precise, as goaline tetch is, then give managers a 'Refs Challenge', so ref & linesmen officiate the game, just like they used to, only calling for VAR to check on/offsides & to review like incidents between players off the ball but work out a system, which limits how many they can use over the season to stop abuse, that if a manager thinks a ref missed something they can challenge the decision for the ref to go review it, from several angles to see if they or linesman made a clear mistake like the manager/players say

The overuse is my biggest issue with VAR. They sold it to us that it woukd only be used for "clear and obvious errors". Instead they've made it mandatory that every goal be reviewed to death. Looking for any irrelvant incident going back minutes before the goal to chalk them off. Investigating every offside to a millimeter. Nobody wants this. When someone is 2 years offside and they miss it. That's what we want. Or when someone gets pulled down by thier hair in the box,.... they lied to us.

How do the officials using VAR evaluate a clear and obvious error when the referee doesn't seem it as such? This ambiguity is the prime reason behind the subjectively differing ways referees look at the same situation. Same as fans. Things need to be more binary for there to be an irrefutable baseline and now that it's happening, everyone's miserable and whinging about the passion and emotion disappearing from games.

Rugby, cricket, hockey all have a system where u can hear what the referee on TV is saying & watch the replays so atleast u know why a decision is taken. Plus the only one who can talk to a referee or umpire is the captain. Also it should be the referee on ground who can refer the decision to the VAR rather then VAR who points their views to the ref and at the end ask the ref to view it rather then take the decision.

In the Chelsea-West Ham game, referee could have taken the right decision which every 12 yo could see, instead he also decided to steal the point against West Ham! That referee & VAR referee shouldn’t officiate. Similar with ones who didn’t penalize cucurella hairpull, disallows Newcastle goal, and linesman who wrongly raised the offside flag in courtinho goal vs city. If you get ex-pros in the VAR box, the bias will be so bad the decisions will be worse. Imagine Carragher having to make a decision to lose Liverpool a match lol, especially if it meant losing a title... A better idea is complete independent refs from overseas imo. Remove any bias at all. These football refs are refs because they love the game, they love the game because they watched and supported a team growing up. They probably have some bias they can't get rid of, some teams they don't like. High quality foreigners as refs, no attachments and so forth

I've watched countless rugby games and I've never seen a player dive or milk a tackle or players run up and surround the referee it's always the captain and if any player is in front of the captain the captain throws them back and they listen to him and then the captain and ref have a chat same goes if one of his players does something wrong the ref tells the captain why. Football refs are too soft and allow things the rugby refs wouldn't stand for and it needs to be bought into the game that way the refs might have more confidence in making difficult decisions during games.

It's not the tech fault, it's the humans running it. If we had AI tech, probably make accurate calls. It would be a lot easier if var spotted the issue and a ref looks at a screen for 30 seconds. Makes his call. Rugby even play it in the stadium for the ref. It's var have a chat and a recommendation but ultimately ref makes the call. What's the big deal about taking 30 seconds out to make a call. It's not like it's used constantly.

If players stayed on their feet more and stopped rolling around at a gust of wind holding their legs as if they are going to drop off only to then get up and sprint in the next phase of play the referees would not have to rely on var as much. This is now a deep rooted issue and to me is getting worse as years go by. The play acting has to be quashed from youth to adult level. Referees have to be supported to help stop this...i would have no issue if a player is told to just get up and get on with the game...i know the "dark arts" are a major part (sadly) but the thought of someone deliberately trying to get a fellow professional sent off for nothing is a pretty sad state that football has allowed itself to get into. I'm sorry but these players are in the gym every day and are built like monsters...are you telling me someone brushing their shoulder is going to bring them down like a sack of potatoes... The other issue is social media...refs can be frustrating but, as we dont want players to be racially abused a ref receiving death threats or having their familys (often children) abused and threatened with horrific and often sexual violence...no wonder they dont want to make a decision and look to var to vindicate and make that decision for them...that has to be stopped and supported in a simlar way.
