Pianists:
0:01 Nikolaj Lugansky
2:51 Arthur Rubinstein
5:39 Anna Fedorova
8:18 Daniil Trifonov
11:12 Sergei Rachmaninoff
13:48 Valentina Lisitsa
Story:
Composed in the villa that Rachmaninov owned in Lucerne, Switzerland, in the summer of 1934, the Rhapsody was premiered, with great success, on November 7 of the same year at the Lyric Opera House in Baltimore, with the author himself as soloist and the Philadelphia Orchestra conducted by Leopold Stokowski.
The rhapsody follows the same development as the Capriccio op. 1, no. 24 by Niccolò Paganini, with an initial theme on which variations are composed.
The Rhapsody is structured in 24 variations. Although they follow one another without interruption, the composition can be divided into three macro-sequences which correspond to the three movements of a concert: the first part includes variations 1-11, the second (slower) goes from 12 to 18, while the remaining variations form the finale. The slow, melodic Andante cantabile (variation 18) is by far the best known section of the work. In it the composer uses the same theme as in the others, however creating a specular inversion of the melodic trend.

Lisitsa’s execution is gorgeous, but Rachmaninov’s one surpasses it😁

Finally someone who isn't here to destroy artists' work... I like Lisitsa, but I respect everyone else. Rachmaninoff is obviously a separate matter

I agree about Rubinstein. But I have to say how much I LOVED the orchestra with Lugansky. Verdernikov had that pickup band (Russian National Orchestra) playing their hearts out. Very underrated conductor (and orchestra).

His (deleted from RU-vid) rendition of Glazunov's 7th symphony with Japanese HNK(?) orchestra is great. I think he could have recorded the best live (video) set of Glazunov's symphonies, a breakthrough in how we hear and understand those opuses. Such a shame.

Rubinstein. Beauty. No exaggerated rubato which seems temptation to the others. Just...poetry.

It would be difficult to go against the master himself, as he understood the expressive motif firsthand for this piece, although Trifonov was really connecting on this. Excellence is after all, so hard to gauge when it appears on so many levels, as this piece particularly affords to a wealth of performances.

Lugansky's performance is the best, in terms of agreement with the score. In this concert, if I'm not mistaken, he even performed with a plaster on the middle finger of his left hand. I've seen him twice live: a monster.

I have to say that, after many years of hearing performances of this variation, the performance that has moved me the most is by William Kapell from 1946 - Kapell would have been just 24 or 25 at this time (this video also contains Kapell's recording of the Liszt Mephisto Waltz [which is legendary] as well as the Evocacion by Albeniz [which is priceless]): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-R7z035cNgiY.html
