Written in 1965, “Variations on a Korean Folk Song”, is one of the giants of the symphonic band literature. The work consists of five variations based on the Korean folk song “Arirang” that composer John Barnes Chance heard while serving in the Army in South Korea in the 1950s. The piece centers around an A-flat major pentatonic scale and highlights the different instrument families of woodwinds, brass, and percussion.
Please enjoy “Variations on a Korean Folk Song” by John Barnes Chance!

Thanks for this upload. This is my favourite piece for bringing the best performance out of a wind orchestra. Having first heard this played by a junior wind orchestra of Newham (east London, UK) at the Royal Albert Hall in April 1984, it still brings immense joy, with all the different moods conveyed through the piece, and of Korea too. 2:37 - 4:17 is a rapture in itself ❤ Then there is the stellar ending from 5:14 ⭐ I don't think this piece gets the recognition it deserves, and whether it's performed by a junior wind orchestra, or a military band, it always uplifts the senses 🎼👏🏾

I'm a high school percussionist. We're playing this piece quite a bit slower than the intended tempo in order to not sound like a disorganized ball of noise, and I'm still trying to wrap my head around the snare part in the middle. It doesn't help that I suck at concert rolls.

I did this song in Grade 13 because it was the Kiwanis competition song (that might just be a Canadian thing, not sure). The issue was, we did not have a single oboe player in the school. 3 of us knuckled down to learn the oboe. There is a reason it is classed as one of the most difficult instruments to play! (One guy managed to get really good at it shortly before the competition thank goodness. Not me. Give me a French Horn any day thanks.)

@BaritoneIrishman
@BaritoneIrishman Год назад
@@mjc3813 Our sound technicians said it helps to provide a more accurate feed of the sound in the room (or something like that). Here's what the maker says about the head-shaped microphone on their website: The KU 100 Dummy Head is a replica of the human head with a microphone built into each ear. When the recorded audio signal is reproduced through high-quality headphones, the listener perceives a sound image almost identical to the one they would have heard at the recording location of the Dummy Head (head-related stereophony). When played back through loudspeakers, the sound matches to a high degree that of conventional stereo microphones, placed in the same position. However, a superior quality is added, that of a distinct spatial depth perception.
