This vintage vessel will become quite the gorgeous version of the original one and built to last another 50 years. My Dad was a Staff Sergeant in WW2. He would really appreciate this build as I do in his eyes.

I just met the sweetest little girl on a sport fishing boat in the San Francisco Bay today, she was the captain’s daughter and her name is Gemma. She asked me if could help her crack a peanut for her and called me “ customer boy” I’m 62 😅. She was full of energy and just kept going. Busy all day, no worries and happy with her day. There must be something in the name 😊

Hello Gemma, it’s more important to seal the top, the side you can’t see, and the ends than the rest of it.

What Mike says! At least one coat on the top and ends to seal the wood some. Also, run a heat gun down them after coating to help pop the air bubbles that inevitably form. You'll never get rid of all of them, but the fewer the better.

Hi Gemma, Beams are looking good, well done. Just to share a little tip which you may find useful. When carrying out my boat work, I’ve always sealed the timber all round, even if it’s one or two thinned down coats on the surfaces that are not seen, it will help to stop water or moisture ingress. Often water getting into the timber from the surfaces that are not sealed can cause the timber to discolour / decay. I’m sure you don’t want to go back over all of those beams again now, but perhaps something to think about for the next stage of the project. Please don’t take this as a criticism, I’m just sharing from my experiences to try and help. Love watching the videos and seeing the boat progress, as a joiner myself it makes me think about taking on a wooden boat project one day. Keep up the good work both of you.
@davidelliott5843
@davidelliott5843 2 месяца назад
Moisture ingress should be the same all around. Leaving the tops open can lead to other issues - cracking etc. deffo varnish all 4 sides. Top doesn’t need to be pretty. So do it first and dry with that face down.

Two hints. Spread newspapers on the nice floor to prevent drips from sticking. Second and more important, open the doors to ventilate the room. Those varnish vapours can be harmful. Thanks for the video. Jon - Ian on your side of the pond.

A tip for painting if you want brush clean up to be easer, pour some of the products solvent, be it water, meth, thinners or turps into the base of the brush before starting. More important with a good brush of course but doing that will help prevent the build of thickened product at the base and also make cleaning easer especially if you want the brush to last. Good decision to varnish btw.

Hi Gemma, you really really do need to varnish the top face as well so the beam is completely sealed. If the top is unsealed it will suck in any moisture that gets under or through the deck and rot out the beam eventually. You have already seen / experienced what happens to unpainted or unsealed wood on other parts of the boat.

You do need to seal the top too it’s not for looks that area will be directly in contact with the the deck and any rain water that makes it past will sit in the upper plank.

You should be wearing a mask!!!! And in the future get some 2inch wide tape and pull off enough tape to go from side on the paint can and all you do is form a v inside the edge and wala no more spills in the edge

I would have thought it essential, to coat the side that goes against the deck? Surely, if moisture is going to get in anywhere ,it will be that side. I'm excited ,to see all this put together, in Sarinda .

That varnish looks really well. It brings out the grain and colour of the timber. Add a coat or two to the tops and ends to keep moisture from getting in to the timber when its in place, You can do it when you get to Sarinda as the main work, the visable sides are done.

Interesting to hear what the manufacturers mix ratio for first coating is?. I was told many decades ago, on new wood, always do the first 2 coats with a 50 / 50 mix, then the next 2 coats 75 / 25, then every coat after being neat. I`m glad you`re varnishing the beams, when you fit the deck, the varnished wood will really stand out against the white coachroof. That`s if you do the coachroof white of course?.

I do understand how moving to a smaller shop would cause problems with usable area. I rebuilt an engine in a garage that was built for a model t ford. I found out really quick that there was no area for a engine stand or hoist. I ended up building the engine on the floor during a very nasty cold winter with no heat in the garage. I am sure that you are having problems associated with lack of space also.
