Vatican officially repudiates the Doctrine of Discovery | Truth & Politics 

Clarification: This is simply a reiteration. The ‘doctrine’ has been abrogated as early as 1537 through the bull Sublimis Deus.

Land needs to be returned where it can be returned and reparations given. Also indigenous places need to be renamed their original names. I hope this history is being taught in the schools as well. The same thing needs to be done in the United States and Mexico.

The damage has long been done. Hundreds of years of doing this.

600 years too late, oh well better late than never. Now if we could only get the Vatican to renounce the inquisition and admit the churches brutality.

If they did change, they would be disassembling the very essence of who the papacy is. Therefore Rome never changes, and it can't, else it would not be the papacy.

The Vatican needs to pay restitutions

The revelation says church, state, and business will come to their end together. They've been one entity since the Roman times. Too bad those that suffered at their behest. If there is a God he must be pi$$Ed off.

We cannot proceed until we acknowledge mistakes and work together to undo as much harm as possible and make a future together which respects people and their history. It means shifts in our history to work on monumental change.. no matter how threatening some may find it to be it must be done. We need to listen carefully from both sides and work towards effective change. It is hopeful to see a leadership like Pope Francis make such a change and acknowledge that the doctrine led to horrible confrontation. I hope that we now begin to acknowledge mistakes and work willingly to make changes.

I'm a Catholic and we have always been taught that the Catholic Church teaches that the missionaries went to preach the Gospel of Christ Our Saviour and to baptize all nations as He commanded, that the Europeans are not superior to the indigenous peoples they colonized. That all people are equal in dignity as people created in the image and likeness of God, for whom Christ gave His life to save and who are called to be baptized into the mystical body of Christ, the Church. Every society, in human history, always think they are better than the other, disregarding race or ethnicity. Some cultures bother to write their history and other didn't. People can guess how the other culture would be during that time based on little information and some archeology discoveries. People don't think about all this before starting pointing fingers and taking sides.

The church should hand over all church lands and millions of acres of surrounding land to The Tribes to use as they please. Give all church officials a choice. Renounce ties with The Vatican and become normal citizens, or extradition to Italy with all their holdings and money transferred to The Tribes.

The reality is that Christianity would be NOTHING without imperialism and colonialism.
