Wow this analysis is super insightful! Was she actually scored this harshly in quals? 8.1 for a hit is super rough, but that was def a messy vault. Could you explain what are the criterion for excessive snap and 0.3 for insufficient pike? Tysm for this

she actually scored 8.6 which i feel is extremely generous 😅 but you can always nitpick more things from video vs real time. a pike position should be

this isn’t just for vault but for all events, if a gymnastics does a skill that isn’t in the code yet how would the judges rate it?

as far as i know, if gymnasts are going to compete a new skill, they submit and basically explain it to the judges/the organisation, and then the judges assign a value they think is fair based on what is in the code already, and if it's performed succesfully it gets added to the code

The production quality of this video is amazing! Thank you for the work you do, all your videos are very helpful to understanding the code. One thing I've always wondered about vault is what is considered good distance? Since it's not marked on the mat like the centerline, do you have like a mental image of where the line between good distance and insufficient distance should be?

thank you so much 🙏 the distance requirements to an extent depends on the height of the gymnast.. i can’t think of a way to quantify it except 0.3 distance would be if they’re superrr close to the vault. and i take 0.1 when i think it could be further. i think of gymnasts like simone biles and mckayla maroney as model examples of good distance

Sometimes you just can't stay tight enough to hold the layout shape, or maybe you feel like the vault isn't has high/safe as it actually is. I'm far from an elite, but I know multiple times when I saw a video of my gymnastics that a skill felt super low or unsafe in the air, but actually was just fine.
